New Trial—Atlanta'* Major and
Council In a Contest Over Street
Faria*.
Atlanta, April 29.—The Confederate fol
ders home, which was formerly a burning
issue in legislative politics and has been
falling into ruin and decay while the
trustees vainly endeavored to solve the
problem of its d l sie)sitlon, is to be sold at
auction before the Fulton county court
aouse next Tuesday.
The property is regarded as very valu
able, being worth over SIOO,OOO, but It Is
very doubtful if it will bring anything
like that sum under the hammer. It has
been ordered put up for sale several times
heretofore, but something has inlet fried
to postpone it.
Under the present order of court for its
sale, the proceeds are to be applied in some
way not yet determined upon for the bene
fit of old soldiers. The home building,
which is situated about live miles from
the city, wouid make a good summer hotel
or large school.
Contest for Walker’ll I’lace.
The recent death of Ur. 11. F. Walker,
number of the Hoard of County Commis
sioners, ban precipitated a warm campaign
for the vacancy on the county board.
In the light the oid lines for and against
the Consolidated Street Kailway Company
are being drawn very tightly. Capt. Clif
ford L. Anderson and Mr. S. B. Turman
are the leading candidates so far. Capt.
Anderson, who was defeated for the place
by Dr. Walker a year ago, is identified
with the management of the Consolidated
indirectly, and he is therefore bearing the
brunt of the fight of bitter partisan who
never fall to ‘ jump'’ on the Consolidated
every time there is a suspicion that it is
Interested in an election.
The Consolidated has two friends now
on the board, and the members are an
tagonistic, which makes the election of
the new man a mailer of the liveliest kind
of interest.
It .fused a New Trial.
Judge John S. Candler refused anew
trial to John Milam, the man convicted
last week of killing Henry Perry and
sentenced to serve ten years in the peni
tentiary for his crime. Milam will carry
his appeal to the Supreme Court.
.Major vs. Council.
There Is an interesting contest going on
between Mayor Woodward and (he ma
jority of the City Council. Several weeks
ago the Mayor vetoed a batch of ordi
nances providing for the pavement of
streets at the city's expense, on the ground
that similar work had been done in other
parts of the county at the expense of
property owners. He regarded the pass
age of these ordinances as "Jobs," and
for that reason refused to sign them.
The Council, however, got together and
passed the ordinances over the veto, but
there was some Irregularity about the ac
tion, and the aldermanlc board refused
to concur. At the last meeting of Coun
cil this defect was cured, however, and
the papers sent again to the Mayor.
Holds They Are Dead.
But the Mayor was determined not to
put his name to the obnoxious ordinances,
and so held them' up until after the ex
piration of four days allowed by law for
acting on ordinances, before they are senf
to the city clerk.
The city attorney now takes the posi
tion that the ordinances ore dead, the
Mayor by his tactics having gotten the
upper hand of Council.
There is a lot of warm talk about the
city hall on both sides of the question.
The Mayor's friends declare that he is
right in stopping all sons of "Jobs,’’ while
the rouncilmen interested declare that the
work they have ordered is for the good
of the whole city, and that on exception
to past rule* should lie made on that
account. There is a lot of friction between
the Mayor and the Council, and the pros
pects are that there will be some Inter
esting developments before dog days are
