Atlanta, Dee. 23.—The capitol will he
closed Monday, it being a legal holiday,
and Gov. Candler issued the formal or
der to that effect to-day.
Very few of the slate officials will spend
Christmas in Atlanta. Most of them go
to their homes in the several parts of the
state from which they hail. The Governor
will spend the day quietly with his family.
The secretaries of the executive office
will enjoy a holiday. Maj. Warren and
Maj. Hitch will he In Kirkwood, while
Maj. Candler will be in the city. Maj.
Hitch will leave for his former home In
Quitman Tuesday. Controller General
Wright and Capt. Tip Harrison will quiet
ly observe the holiday season at their
homes in this clly. Col. Philip Cook, sec
retary of state, will he in Atlanta Mon
day, but will leave early in the week for
his Lee county farm to hunt birds. His
assistant, Col. Price, will remain in At
lanta.
Glenn Goes to Memphis.
Prof. G. R. Glenn, State School Commis
sioner, will spend the day in Atlanta, but
will leave Monday night for Memphis,
where he will he In attendance several
days on the meeting of the Southern Ed
ucational Association. His assistant, Maj
Woodall, will spend Christmas in Colum
bus. Col. Phil G. Byrd, the acting ad
jutant general, will spend Christmas In
Rome. On his return he will stop nt
Kingston to muster in twenty men and a
lieutenant of the Bartow Guards company
of the Fifth Georgia Regiment.
Col. O. B. Stevens, the commissioner of
ngrieulture, will go to his farm at Daw
ten for the holidays.
Prison Commissioner Turner will be at
Betonton and Commissioner Eoson at Tel
fair. Gen. Evans and Capt. Yancey will
remain in Atlanta.
The Railroad Commissioners will spend
the holidays at their respective homes and
the secretary. Mr. Massey, will take a
trip to South Carolina. Most of the Su
preme Court justices left the city to-day
for their homes.
Commissioner of Agriculture Stevens
this afternoon appointed Dr. W. E. Ed
wards oil inspector at Cordele, Ga.
Opposition to Eason.
The recent political rumor that Hon.
Tom Eason, prison commissioner, would
have opopsitlnn was verified to-day by
the authoritative announcement of Hon.
Mark Everett of Stewart that he would
make the race. Mr. Everett was a mem
tar of the House of 1890-91. of the Senate of
3896-97 and of the House of IS9S-99. He is
n brother of ex-Congressman R. W. Ever
ett of Polk county, who was also a mem
ber of the Legislature which lias just ex
pired. He was born near Lumpkin, Stew
art county, Oct. 12, 1845. He has been a
farmer all his life and a successful one.
Present for Airs. Candler.
Mrs. Gov. Candler the distinction
of possessing tlte first damask table cloth
woven in the South. It was the gift of
tlie Kincaid Manufacturing Company of
Griffin. Ga., and was presented to Mrs.
Candler through the president. Mr. W. C.
Kincaid, as a Christmas present. Mrs.
Candler doubtless values this piece of
damask because it is both the product of
a Georgia mill, and the beginning of a
new industry in the South. This mill i
turhing out vast quantities of goods equal
to the best manufactured anywhete in this
country, or in Europe. lis trade extends
all over the United States, and even pene
trates Europe, Asia and Africa.
FOl R ADMITTED TO THE BAR.
Four Others Examined In Atlanta
Failed to Pass.
Atlanta, Dec. 23.—Four young men were
admitted to the bar in Atlanta to-day.
They were J. F. A. Chambers, T. O.
Hathcock, Lee M. Jordan and W. M.
Jackson. The examination was held some
two weeks ago, and there were eight can
didates who stood the examination, four
of whom were turned down. The examina
tions were held under the Slaton law,
which requires written examinations In the
presence of the Judge of the Superior
Court, each applicant’s answers being con
sidered an..l passed on by the board with
out the slightest intimation on their part
as to the idenity of any of the authors of
the papers before them. There were 146
questions in the examination recently held
over the state on the same day, and it re
quired a correct answer to 102 of these for
the applicant to pass. Messrs. Washing
ton Dessau of Macon, and Joseph R. Ira
nian of Augusta, constituted the examina
tion board.
YOUNG GLEAN KILLED lIMISELF.
AVas an Accidental Shot—Another
Tragedy nt Home.
Rome, Ga.. Dec. 23.—Frank Glenn, Jr.,
grandson of Hon. F. A. Gienn, ex-counly
school Commissioner, accidentally shot
and killed himself this morning at Cave
Springs, in this county. He was attempt
ing to get on a horse to go hunting when
the gun went off, penetrating just below
the hear! and killing him instantly. Young
Glenn was an employe of the Georgia
School for the Deaf and was highly es
teemed by all who knew him.
Another Christmas tragedy occurred in
the Fourth ward of this city on Thursday
night when Wallace Johnson shot and
killed his stepfather, Nelson Reynolds.
Both are negroes, and Johnson is in jail
on a charge of murder.
Tlie Rome merchants have had the big
gest trade the past week they have known
for many seasons.
TRAGEDY AT JASPER, FLA.
Hinton Shot Down Unperson. Who
Hod Drawn a Knife on Him.
Jasper, Fla., Dec. 23.—Mr. W. H. Hinton
and William Roberson became involved In
a quarrel this afternoon. Roberson rushed
upon Hinton with a knife. Hinton notified
Roberson to stop or he would kill him
Roberson advanced threateningly toward
Hinton. Hinton shot Roberson three times,
killing him instantly. Hinton is supposed
to be jusiiflable.
Holiday Weather In Atlnnta.
Atlanta, Dec. 23.—There was a striking
contrast 1s t ween the atmospheric condi
tions in Atlanta to-day and those of the
preceding four day* of the week. Tuesday
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday made
up an ideal Christmas week, but to-dav

to consider the question of a consolida
tion of the Florida Central and Peninsular
Railroad Company with the South Bound
Railroad Company, or any other railroad
corporation or corporations, and all ques
tions connected therewith.
This call is made by the president upon
the written request of a majority of the
registered holders of the stock of this
