HOTEL SWINDLERS HELD.
Iliiiley and Caatleinuyne Relieved to
He Adept* In Reating Their Wny.
Harry Bailey, charged with vagrancy,
and P. Casllemayne, with cheating and
swindling, were given a hearing in the
lie'order's Court yesterday morning and
both were remanded to the City Court.
They are the men who have been beating
tli • hotels, an account of which was pub
lished in yesterday's Morning News.
Castlemayne had contracted a two
weeks' board bill at the Planters' Hotel,
representing himself as the agent of a
soap company in Indianapolis and promis
ing to pay his bill as soon as he could
hear from the firm. It was thestj false
i, presentations that caused the charge of
cheating and swindling.
Bailey, on the other hand, seems to be
in the vernacular ’'a smoother article,"
and knowing the value of a good appear
ance, made his preparations accordingly.
His clothes were of the latest style and
best quality: he wore patent leather shoes
and an overcoat of the newest fashion,
and the remainder of his toilet was hi
k< -ping. He was not deceived in thinking
thai a good appearance would carry him
through, the hotel people seeing him so
well dressed and in such apparently pros
perous circumstances were not so exact
ing regarding his means as they would
I ve been otherwise, and so Bailey was
forced to make no incriminating promises,
in nee the most serious crime with which
t'. . ;m be charged is that of vagrancy.
Immediately after the court had closed
i, young man walked up to the clerk's dealt
shl asked with what crime Castiemayne
had been charged and if he could see
about arranging to give bond for him.
nffi ers Shea and Soulley had been watch
ing him from the time he entered the
court room and they arrested him on the
( •large of being a suspicious character
and probably implicated in the acts cf the
other two men whose friend he seemed to
he. He was searched but noihing more
incriminating than a bunch of keys, sev
eral pawn tickets, and a Confederate btil
for $lOO was found. Hater in the day he
w.is discharged by the superintendent of
police.
H is known that there are two more ho
tel beats belonging to this gang who are
in town, or have been here recent y. and
unless they leave In a hurry or reform It
is only a question of a very short t
when they will share the fate of their
lri> nds and eo-parrners In crime.
Vince ihe arrest of Castlemayne and Bai
le> It has been learned that their opera
llcns have been even more extended than
V it first thought .and that other hotels
have also suffered though not to such an
ex'ent as the De Soto and the Planters.
The other cases of importance thnt came
up wpre those of J. Bigler, charged by
R. T. Jolly with assault, which was con
tinued, and cases against M. Waldburg,
find Ben Butler, both colored, who are
charged with an attempt at larceny. Dur
ing (he excitement of the fire Friday night
lhere men thought it would be a good time
to lay in a supply of New Year provisions
and so they attempted to break with their
fists the window of Rundbaken's grocery,
333 Broughton street, west. They were
mined over to the City Court.

Sarah Owens Brought Hen White to
Time In Justice's Court.
Ben White and Sarah Owens were mar
ried in a magistrate's court yesterday
morning, bringing to a finale a drama that
is often enacted in the lives of the poor,
though it seldom comes to light.
Both of the principals are colored, but
for all that Sarah had a heart that was
susceptible to the winning ways of the
fickle Ben, and when he made extrava
gant smile* of which her personal charms
"ere the subject, or Indulged In flowery
metaphors, and called her his own black
babe, or other similar endearing names,
she thought she was surely “It," and gave
him her complete confidence.
Love's young dream followed its usual
course, until Sarah presented Ben a crow
ing pickaninny, as a pledge of her affec
tion. Instead of seeing it In this light,
however. Ben sow in the newcomer only
an imwoloomed addition to the family;
cn his love grew cold and both Sarah
end the child, were left severely alone.
When Sarah was finally convinced that
Lon was not of a mind to come back
again, she took legal steps to have him
at least support the child. For herself,
she says, she is always able to make a
living.

accept it as part of the obligation of
