EULENBURG WAS ACQUITTED. 1
(Continued from Eighth Page.)
Jury <o the fact that on the afternoon
following the robery, Eulenburg, when
asked by Detectives Shea and Oarrity if
anyone had been ft) his place with Cha
son, seid that two men were with the
victim, whom he did not know, but who
“he thought were two of Chason's country
friends.”
The case was discussed by the Solicitor
General without denunciation of any of
the witnesses. He left it with the Jury
with a plain and clear statement of the
facte. Judge Falligant delivered his
charge, and in little more than two hours,
a verdict of not guilty had been return
ed. Judge Twiggs may well regard this
verdict as one of the most remarkable
triumphs within the extensive range 8C
his experience as a criminal lawyer.
Levy and Davis have both acknowledged
their share in the robbery, and both will
plead guilty to the indictments against
them. Their plea, probably, n*ill.be made
when court convenes to-morrow morning.
Eulenburg was given his liberty after
the verdict in his case was rendered.
HO It It IG A N IS AX ALDERMAN.
Unanimously Elected ly Connell
Yesterday Afternoon,
The recess meeting of City Council yes
terday afternoon was short, but full of in
terest. Mr. J. J. Horrisan was elected on
alderman to succeed Mr. J. P. Williams,
resigned, a compulsory vaccination c-rdi
uane was introduced and passed, and th?
Masonic Temple Association was granted
permission to erect a temporary structure
in the Park Extension for the purposes of
its approaching fair.
The board met at 4 o'clock. Shortly
after the meeting had been called to ord-r
by Mayor Myers, Alderman Wells nomi
nated Mr. John J. Horrigan to fill the ex
isting vacancy in Council. The motion
was promptly seconded. It being evid nt
that Council was unanimous in the matter,
the rules wi re suspended and the Mayor
cast the ballot, declaring Mr. Horrigan
unanimously elected.
Notice of his election was sent by Mr. W.
P. Bailey, clerk of Council, to Mr. Horri
gan, shortly after the adjournment of the
meeting. Mr. Horrigan is engaged in the
cotton business with Floyd & Cos. and also
conducts a grocery business at Bryan .and
Houston streets. He was a candidate i n
the Myers’ ticket at the last election, but
•was one of the three candidates on the
ticket who failed to receive sufficient votes
to get on the board. He is a young man
and it is predicted that h 6 will make a
good working member of the board.
The petition of the Masonic Temple As
sociation, petitioned to be allowed to
erect a temporary structure, 120x100 feet,
in the Park Extension for the purpose of
holding a fair there in April. T con
sent of the commanding officers of atl the
military companies having an interest in
the parade ground, was attached to
the petition. There being no objection,
the petition was granted.
Alderman Wells was appointed vice
chairman of Council, which position was
formerly held by ex-Alderman Williams.
Mayor Myers stated that he would an
nounce the rearrangement of the commit
tees of Council at the next meeting.
FAIR Hl ILl)l\<i WELL UNDER WAT.
Will Be Finished by the End ol the
Week.
Work on the building for the Masonic
Fair has progressed rapidly. The greater
part of the frame work has been finished,
the joists put into place, and ready for the
flooring, work on which will start to-mor
row. The building will be 100 by 120 feet,
and though intended for only temporary
use, will be well built, and fitted up with
all the necessaries and conveniences of
a permanent structure. It is expected to
hove it finished by to-morrow week, when
the booths will be erected, the goods placed
in position for display, and everything
made ready for the opening night, on
April 16.
Besides the work of the Donation Com
mittee, which is bringing in handsome re
sults from local merchants and others, the
ladies who have been interested in tho
fair have done excellent work, having al
ready secured the promises of numbers
of smaller articles of fancy work, and
similar articles that will add to the at
tractiveness of the booths, as well as to
the net proceeds of the fair when these
articles shall have been disposed of.
Nor is the work of selling options being
neglected. This .part of the business is
being looked after by the members, their
wives, sweethearts, and in many
even the cl) ldren, to such an extent that
already all of the tickets on many of the
articles have been disposed of. About
five hundred of these books of tickets
have already been placed in the hands of
the workers and others are being given
out daily. •
There will be a meeting of the wives,
daughters, sisters and friends of the mem
bers of Landrum Lodge to-morrow af
ternoon at 4 o'clock at the lodge room in
Masonic building to discuss ways and
means of assisting in the work.
