Atlanta. April 21.—A special exhibit
showing the condition ond •’ velopment of
the negro in typical Southern states, and
ecpecially of the 850.000 negroes in tie
state of Georgia, left Atlanta to-day for
the Paris Exposition.
The exhibit was prepared for shipment
at the Atlanta University, the well known
negTo college, and went to Chicago, from
where It will be token to New York,
where the exposition headquarters of this
country are located, and then 6ent t
Paris.
The whole exhibit is an attempt to show
in a wall space 6 by 3 feet, which is all
the room allowed for it, what the negro
really is in the South. The exhibit con
sists of five parts. One is an electric
clock in a carved frame, showing at suc
cessive intervals of lime the number of
acres of land <>w T ned by the negroes of
Georgia since 1870. Thirty-one charts
were done by hand in colors. These
charts show the growth and distribution
of the negro population in Geor
gia and throughout the world.
It also shows the age, classification and
conjugal condition of the negroes of this i
state as compared with the whites; the
proportion of mulattoes, the amount of
property owned and other statistics. There
are (harts showing the income and ex
penditure of negro families. Statistics of
350 negro families In Atlanta, and some
2,000 families in some country districts in
South Georgia have been used as a basis
for this compilation and the charts show
the proportion which families with dif
ferent incomes spend for rent, food,
clothes and other necessities.

bany and Mclntosh county are In the ex*
Mbit. On theee maps the distribution of
the negro population is given. Nine large
quarter volumes, bound In leather, con
tain a collection of all the laws passed
In Georgia in regard to the negroes from
1732 to ISB9.
GAY GIVEN FIVE YEARS.

Swain sboro, Ga., April 21.—Superior
Court has been in session here during the
past week and adjourned this afternoon.
One of the most Interesting cases tried
was that of the state vs. A. A. Gay, who
was charged with the murder of Will
Gramson, colored. The jury returned a
verdict of voluntary manslaughter and
asked the mercy of the court. Gay
was sentenced to the penitentiary for a
term of five years.
Solicitor E. T. Rawlings was assisted by
Col. G. M. Warren of the local bar. Col.
F. H. Saffold represented the defendant.
Gay is a young man about 25 years
of age and is from one of the best fam
ilies of the county.

Atlanta, April 21.—The Supreme Court,
which has been resting between terms a
week,will take up the criminal docket next
Monday. On that date also the court
will pass upon the validity of the bonds
voted by the town of Calhoun. This is
the first case of the kind ever brought be
fore the Supreme Court. It is brought un
der the new’ act of 1897. The effect of the
hearing will he to fix the standing of these
Calhoun bonds in the market.
The Macon annex case will b* heard
Tuesday. The civil docket beginning with
the Romo circuit, will be taken up Wednes
day.
SOOCK FAILED TO APPEAR.

May Never Be Tried.
Atlanta, April 21.—John H. Soock, th®
young white man who confessed to having
robbed Cashier Cave of the Kimball House
of $1,500 may never be tried for the of
fense. Soock succeeded in making bond
some weeks ago and has been at liberty
since then. When his case was called In
♦he Superior Court, Soock failed to appenr
and the bond was forfeited. The bond vraa
in the sum of SSOO, and was signed by the
father of the young man, J. H. Soock, Sr.,
and Fred Leblond.
GOVERNOR TO GO TO ALBANY.

Speech at Chantauaua.
Atlanta, April 21.—Gov. Allen D. Can
dler and staff will leave the city Monday
afternoon for Albany, where they will at
tend the Chautauqua that opens Monday
morning. Mrs. Candler will accompany
Ihe Governor on the trip. The wife of
Secretary C. M. Hitch will also accom
pany the party, traveling with Mrs. Can
dler. The Governor will review the troops
Tuesday morning, after which he will de
liver an address at 11 o'clock.
PONS KILLED BY ALTAIAN.
Killing Supposed to lie the Result of
an Old Fend.
Sandersville, Fla., April 21.—Ernest E.
Pons, a prominent lawyer of Jacksonville,
who owns considerable property here, was
shot and killed this afternoon during an
altercation with Richard and James Alt
man.
The cause of the shooting cannot be
definitely learned, but is supiosed to be
the result of an old feud. The Altman
brothers and a man named Thornton were
arrested and Jailed.
Mr. Pons was a son of late State Treas
urer Pons and served in the last Legis
lature.
