BELLINGER SHOT AT BAMBERG.
BAPTIST PREACHER KILLED WELL
KNOWN YOUNG MAN.
Trouble ncgati Over the Pointing o.'
n Fence—Yount Ilelllntter Drew n
Pistol mid Venlerilay Pastor John
aon Armed Himself With a lloohle
lln-rrclled Shot Gun Bellinger
Fired First and Then Rerelved Ilia
Death Wound.
Charleston, S. C., May 4.—One of the
most sensational homicldee in the his
tory of Bamberg, this state, occurred
there this morning at 10 o'clock, when
Rev. W. E. Johnson, pastor of the Bap
tist Church, shot and almost instantly
killed \V. T. Bellinger, stenographer of
this Judicial district.
Trouble between the two began yester
day over the painting of a line fence be
tween the premises of John R. Bellinger,
father of the deceased, and the Baptist
parsonage, at which time It Is said hot
words were passed and a pistol was
drawn by Bellinger.
This morning, as young Bellinger was
returning from the Fostofflce to his fath
er's residence Rev. Johnson, armed with
a double-barrel shotgun, accosted him in
front of the Carlisle Fitting School, a
few words were passed, a few shot were
exchanged and young BellingeT lay dy
ing on the ground with a smoking pistol
In his right hand.
After the shooting occurred Rev. John
son walked quietly into his house, un
hurt, and remained there until about 1
o'clock when he went down to the Jail
and surrendered to Sheriff Hunter.
As to how the affair started this morn
ing and as to who shot first, there Is
considerable diversity of opinion, but It
Is generally claimed that Bellinger shot
first and that Rev. Johnson only shot
once. Bellinger’s pistol had four empty
chambers and he probably shot four
times, twice at least after he had fallen
mortally wounded. Bellinger was struck
in the right side by twelve buck and eight
■mall shot, which penetrated his lungs
•nd liver, causing almost instant death.
The families connected with the unfor
tunate affair are two of the most promi
nent and influential In the town.

PAT KEARNEY PARDONED. '
Governor Acted Favorably on the
Hoard's Recommendation.
Atlanta. May 4.—Gov. Candler to-night
pardoned Pat Kearney, who was sent up
from Chatham county for life for the mur
der of his friend. J. W. Wyneas.
The Governor said he based his action on
the fact that the evidence indicated that
the prisoner was not guilty of murder, but
that the shooting was accidental. In nr*,
riving at this conclusion he relied largely
upon the testimony of Mrs. Wyness to the
effect that her husband, after the shoot
ing, told her that the shooting w<s acci
dental, and that Pat did not mean to shoot
him.
The Governor said that this created a
doubt as to the intention to kill and, under
the circumstances, he thought the prisoner
•hould be given the benefit of the doubt.

Fire Could Not Have Been More
Painful.
“ After spending two years in tak

suggested for eczema, but without
avail, mv mother was induced to tako
Hood's Sarsaparilla. The result was
wonderfully gratifying. Her limbs
had been terribly lacerated by the dis

She was, in fact, almost wild. Two
bottles of Hood’s Sarsaparilla com

Eat Well, Sleep Well.
** Hood’s Sarsaparilla has been a
great blessing to mo. I was weak,
irritable, tired and nervous; had no
appetite and was always sad and des

little book about Hood’s Sarsaparilla.
I looked it over and resolved to try a
bottle. I was better before it was
gone, so I kept on until I had taken
flvo bottles. I can now sleep well,
feel cheerful and can do all my work,
including plain sewing, and I can
walk two or three miles a day. lain
