Quitman, Ga., May s.—Mr. Robert
Brooks and a negro named Jesse Davis
were plowing to-day in adjoining fields
when they became Involved in a dispute,
and the negro is said to have run Brooks
out of the field with a hatchet.
Brooks returned to his home and got a
gun, and soon after met the negro who
had a pistol and they emptied their wea
pons at each other without either being
hit.
The negro then came to town and dur
ing the afternoon Mr. John Brooks, the
father of the man with whom he had had
the difficulty, got after him with a gun
and chased him back into the milinery
department of IJIIy & Brice's store, and
was prevented from shooting the negro
by Mr. Lilly.
To-night just before 8 o'clock the negro
was in the store of J. W. Averett when
the clerk noticed an arm and hand hold
ing a pistol, pointed Into the store, the
rest of the body being in darkness and
two shots were fired at the negro, the
first entering his side and penetrating the
bowels and the second missing him.
The man was picked up and carried to
the doctor’s office and an examination
trade which showed that he has very
little chance for his life. The shooter has

NO COMMENCEMENT
Of the Georgia Normal nnd In
dustrial College, Mtllcdgevlllc.
MiHedgevOle, Ga., May s.—At a meeting
Of the Prudential Committee of the board
of trustees of the Georgia Normal and
Industrial College, held here yesterday,
It was decided to have no commencement
exercises of that institution at the close
of the present session. This action was
taken on account of the large number of
Btuderets who have left within the past
two weeks on account of the small-pox
scare, and on account of the unwarrant
ed uneasiness of parents whose daughters
are still here. Dispensing with com
mencement exercises will cut the session
ehort about ten days. The regular final
examinations will begin about the middle
of next week.
The withdrawals from this college are
unquestionably due to the unreasonable
uneasiness of its patrons, who allowed
their excitement and solicitous Interests
tfor their daughters to run away with
their good Judgment.
The Middle Georgia Mechanical and
’Agricultural College, with an a,nnual at
tendance of 450, is now under full head
way, and will continue until the appoint
ed end of its session. The commencement
exorcises of this institution will begin
Sunday, June S.

In the body belonged io the outfit of a
whaler, and the supposition is that It was
struck by professional whale hunters, and
breaking the line, headed across the seas,
unmindful of latitude, and at last died of
the wound.
