Atlanta. • May B.—Mayor Woodward’s
resignation is not yet forthcoming in re
sponse to the demand made by the City
Council yes'erday. Whether or not he
will accede to the demand is a very un
certain question.
When seen to-day by newspaper men
he refused to say a word about the mat
ter, exceitt that he would not discuss it
at all. Col. W. T. Moyere, counsel for
the Mayor, is equally reticent.
There seems to be good reason to be
lieve that Mr. Woodward will refuse to
retire from the office, which pays him
*2OO a month. He will apparently hang
on to it as long as he can. It Is also
equally apparent that he Is being up
held In his determination to freeze on to
the office by some of the minor political
bosses, although the city, as a whole, Is
disgusted with the whole career of the
Mayor, and Is practically unanimous In
the opinion that Mr. Woodward should
retire front public view Just as soon as
he can do so.
The refusal of the Mayor to vacate his
office according to his written promise
■will precipitate a lively row In the Coun
cil, and Impeachment procedlngs will be
Instituted as a means of getting rid of
him. His supporters are claiming, how
ever, that his personal oonduct does not
render him liable to Impeachment, and
the Mayor evidently takes this view of
the matter himself, and will probably
defy the Council to oust him on account
of his jag.
WOULD HAVE TO AID BISHOP.
Pastor Evans May Not Go to St.
Luke’s in Atlanta.
Atlanta, May B.—Rev. W. E. Evans of
Columbia, S. C., who was recently ex
tended a call to the pastorate of St.
Luke’s Episcopal Church, this city, has
encountered a small squall In his voyage
to this parish. It appears that Mr. Ev
ans does not Mke the idea of being re
quired to assist the Dlshop of the diocese
In the discharge of the Cathedral duties,
which are quite onerous, and for that
reason has asked for furl her time to con
sider the call extended to him by St.
Luke’s congregation.
Bishop Nelson was advised of Mr. Ev
ans' mind over the long-distance tele
phone, the Bishop having called up Co
lumbia to ascertain how Mr. Evans felt
about coming to Atlanta. In the talk Mr.
Evnnß asked whether he would be re
quired to assist the Bishop in the Cathe
dral services, and the Bishop answered
that he would be, most assuredly. There
upon the Columbia minister wished to
know whether his refusal to give this as
sistance would make him a discordant
element ih the church, and Bishop Nel
son answered that such a refusal would
certainly be discordant. At this Mr. Ev
ans asked for further time to consider the
call, and the congregation is still waiting
to hear from him. The point he has
raised has made an animated discussion
In the congregation of the church, some
members siding with the Bishop In his
stickling for the ritual and others? being
dlsposod to consider the Bishop too strict
In h!s requirements. St. Luke's Church
has hail many changes of pastors during
the past few years.
KNIGHTS TBNPLAH GATHER. 1
Meeting of Mfißonlo Sopletlp*' Sohslou
In Atlanta,
Atlanta. May B.—The Grand Command
ery Knights Templar of the state of Geor
gia will meet in annual conclave here to
morrow, and remain in cession for two
days. Many delegations or rived this aft
ernoon* and the city is quite alive with
fhe Sir Knights and their friends. A
large delegation Is booked to arrive from
Savannah to-morrow morning.
To-morrow evening at the First Baptist
Church the LAtany will be read, and an
Gd&ress delivered by Rev. Sir J. Y. Fair
Of Savannah. Many of the visitors are
mcoompanled by their ladies, and the pro
grammes of the local lodges embraces sev
eral enjoyable entertainments for them as
■well as the Sir Knights themselves. A
barbecue at Brown wood will be to-mor
row’s treat for the Knights, while the
ladies will be entertained at the Piedmont
X>riving Club.
To-morrow afternoon the Mystic Shrin
ers will hold their annual council, parad
ise In their picturesque costumes, from
Marietta street to Masonic Hall.
HIUTEH GOBS TO BRICKYARD.
Will Serve Hie Sentence of Five
Yearn for Fuiltexalement.
Atlanta, May 8. —Thomas J. Hunter,
former auditor of the Atlanta and West
Faint Railway, recently sentenced to five
years In the penitentiary for embezzle
ment, has been sent to the camp of the
Chattahoochee Brick Company, where he
fetgan to serve his-sentence to-day.
Since sentence was passed upon Hunter,
he has been held at the tower, pending
further trials on other Indictments, but
the Prison Commission was notified yes
terday by the court officials, that there
tvas no reason why Hunter should not be
gin serving his sentence, ami the commis
sion at once decided to transfer him to
the brick yard near the city. It Is more
tlmn likely that the other indictments
against Hunker will never be brought to
trial. Hunter, being an expert bookkeep
er, will do chiefly clerical work at the
brickyard.
