2 GEORGIA CROP CONDITIONS. generally speaking the week HAS BEEN FAVORABLE. Farmer* Have Had Good Opportuni ty to Get In Their Crops, and n Haiu Would Be Beneficial—Crop* a* a Hole Are In Good Condition. The Season With Many Produet*, 1* Baekward. Atlanta. May 15.—The weekly crop re port, issued to-day, says: Fair weather, ample sunshine and tem peratures slightly below the season aver age, with cool nights, have been the pre vailing conditions of the week. Aside fr< tn light local showers In the early part of the week, no precipitation occurred. There is general complaint of lack of moisture, which Is needed to soften land and promote the coming up and growth of late planted cotton. Owing to the lateness of the season, there is yet considerable plowing and planting to be done for all crops, and while under ordinary circumstances rain Is not desirable during this month, It would, however, be of great benefit now. The nights of the week were quite cool, a few were decidedly cool. On the morn ings of the 10th and 11th the temperature registered from 40 to 50 degrees, or slight ly lower in the northern counties, and generally below 50 degrees in the middle and southern districts. Very light frosts occurred In the moun tain districts and on lowlands in the cen tral counties; the damage in all instances was Inconsequential. The cool weather retarded all growth, particularly that of corn and cotton, but It Is believed that the results -will not prove serious. Chop ping has continued in the middle and southern sections; in the northern sec tion planting Is practically completed and considerable cotton is up, but its growth is slow; a little had been chopped. The condition of corn appears to be fav orable, although cut worms are working Ip some localities. Cultivation continues ih the middle and southern section. In the extreme north planting is not com pleted, especially on bottom lands; up land fields are coming up nicely and are being worked. Wheat rust continues, but has not be come generally destructive as yet. and In many sections the crop Is reported as ex cellent. Oats and wheat are fully headed in a few of the central counties. The set ting of potato slips has progressed; white potatoes are damaged by bugs. New po tatoes are being shipped. Peanuts are coming up; melons are growing well, and blossoming In the far south, and there are good stands of sugar cane. General complaint Is made of apples Shedding and Indications point to a short crop; other fruits, except, perhaps, pears, continue promising. Berries are plenti ful. On the -whole, the week Is regarded as having been favorable, as It enables farmers to make good progress In plant ing and cultivating and a generous rain would be very effective. COUNTRY’S CROP CONDITIONS. Weather and Temperature Were Generally FaToraltle, Washington. May 15.—The weekly crop report of the Weather Bureau says: Much-needed rains have fallen east of the Ohio and Missouri rivers. Drought conditions are increasing over a large part of the Middle Atlantic states and portions of Tennessee. The temperature conditions were gen erally very favorable, except in New England, and although the temperatures averaged nearly normal In the Gulf states, complaints of the unfavorable effects of cool nights on germination and growth are received from the central and east ern portions. Frosts, more or less In jurious, were very general east of the Mississippi, as far south as Tennessee and Western North Carolina, on the 10th and Uth. Fpon the whole, the week has been ex ceptionally favorable to com, and plant ing has progressed rapidly. Cool nights, have ehec'Ked the growth of corn in the Dower Ohio and Dower Mississippi val leys and portions of the South Atlantic states. Winter wheat has made favorable pro gress; it Is now heading as far north as the Ohio valley. Early sown spring wheat is generally doing well. Oats reports are not so generally favor oble, but on the whole the outlook Is prom ising. Complaints of unfavorable effects of cool nights upon cotton continue from the cen tral and eastern portions of the cotton belt, where planting is nearing comple tion, but, as a rule, the crop has mads favorable progress. Over much of the flooded districts of Texas there has been absence of rain or only light showers, con ditions needed for planting and replanting, ■which work was vigorously carried on. Much planting remains to be dons in the central and southern portions of Texas and generally the crop In that state ts late and Irregular. Tobacco plants are reported backward in Kentucky, although plentiful, as else where. Transplanting Is finished In South Carolina, and some transplanting has been done In Virginia, but none farther north. Fruit reports for the most part continue favorable, although apples and pears are dropping more or less extensively in por tions of the East Gulf states and lti Mis souri, Kansas and Arkansas.
