Merlins: of the Unions Held nt
Mislil and Speeches Made hy Lo
rn! and Visiting Union Men.
A meeilng of the City Council has been
called for this afternoon at 4:30 o’clock
to hear from the representatives of the
labor unions and a delegation from the
Building Trades Assembly in reference
to a petition from the former for the
adoption of the nine-hour day by the city
and the employment of union labor only
on all city work, whether done directly
by the city or under contract.
The Council did not consider it advisa
ble to take up the question while the po
litical campaign was on, so Mayor Myers
stated yesterday. “Whatever action we
mignt have taken would have been cred
ited to political motives,” said the Mayor.
"Mow that the campaign is over, we can
act without being subjected to any such
suspicion.”
One of the developments of the strike
situation yesterday was the arrival in
town of Mr. W. J. Williams of Atlanta,
a prominent officer of the Union of Car
penters and Joiners. He has asked per
mission to address the members of the
Builders’ Exchange, and may be heard
at the Monday meeting.
At the meeting of the exchange, permis
sion wos asked to address the members
by a number of prominent citizens: Mr.
B. H. Levy, Mayor Myers, Mr. Nicholas
Lang, Mr. George W. Tiedeman, and Uev.
W. A. Nisbet. '
The committee addressed the meetirg,
stating that they came as cltiz ns interest
ed in the welfare of the city, ard desire!
from the members of the Exchange Infor
mation relative to the questions at which
it is now at issue with ihe wo kmen. to
that, if possible, through disinterested par
ties they might be satt.-foctc-rl y settl'd.
Row Mr. 'Nisbet, who has taken consid
erable interest in the labor trouble, asked
that he be allowed to present to the unions
a proposition that the matter It s it ed
!■> allowing the workmen either a t n-hour
day with on increase of 10 per cent, on the
present scale of wage, or that the wo kmen
accept a nine-hour day with the scale cf
wage now paid. The members of the ex
change explained that the increase, as sug
gested. had already been offered in the
proposition made the unions when ihe
trouble was first started, and that now
they were still willing to pay that scale,
but would not agree to treat with the men
as members of unions or in any way oth
er than as individuals.
One of the most hopeful signs of a set
t’ement of the present trouble lies In the
fact that at yesterdays meeting of the
exchange held prior to the call of the
delegation of citizens, a resolution was
passed that on and after Jan. 1, the mem
bers of the Exchange would institute the
nine-hour day.
A number of contractors state that in
their opinion the sttike is practically over,
that the men who formerly were among
the first to walk out at the call of the
unions have, in many instances,
returned and asked for re-employ
ment. Mr. Sceinacker says that
so far as his work on the Weed build
ing is concerned he is in no way embar
rassed. His- brick work is finished, a large
part of the carpentry work also, and the
remainder of the other work is going for
ward rapidly.
Two of the painters that he had employ
ed on the building were set upon and bad
ly beaten Thursday night by men whom
they stated to have been union painters.
The matter was reported to the police,
but the nofi-union men being strangers
in the city, were unable to identify theip
assailants, so no arrests were made.
A well attended mee ting of the striking
laborers was held at Labor Hall last
n ght under the auspices cf the Building
Trades Council. The principal address was
made by Mr. W. J. Williams of the g n
end executive board of the United Broth
ehicd of Carpenters and Joines, of At
lanta, who spoke for an hour. His ad
dress was conservative and fair mind and.
lie advised the laboring men to be care
ful of their conduct and their language,
and told them that they would not gain
their point by violent conduct and loud
mouthing. Their conduct must be-such a*
to win them the confidence and approval
of their fellow citizens
There are good men among the members
of the Builders’ Exchange, he said. Men
who have woiked their way up in life,
and who are enti led to the success with
which they met. Nothing can be gained
hy decrying such men, but by reasoning
wi h them in a fair spirit they may be
• nought to see tile justice of the claims
mod? by the union men.
Tdr. W. S. Harris, of the Trade and La
bor Assembly, made one of his charaeter
-1 • addresses. Mr. C. P. Davis als6 ad
dr ssc-d the meeting. Judge H D. D.
T'vgrs, who had been expected, was un
a le to appear on account of other en
gagements.
A c mrr.l tee selected (r m the various
onions, was appointed to attend the con
f r-nce with the Mayor and Aldermen thl3
afternoon and to lir e the claims of the
m i in men. The me ting was presided ever
