Augusta, Msy 21.—Alter a session of
several hours to-day and an earnest
charge from Judge Brinson, in which he
declared the recent lynching of the negro,
Wilson, who murdered Alexander Whit
ney on the street car, to be “a most in
excusable Instance of mob violence,” the
grand jury made the following present
ment:
“Whereas, Under the charge of his
honor Judge Brinson, this grand Jury has
summoned before It a large number of
cirizens of the city and county, in its
Investigation of the lynching of W. B.
Wilson; and,
“Whereas, It Is Impossible for us to
secure such Information and evidence as
■will enable us to take intelligent crim
inal action against any Individual or In
dividuals connected with said lynching;
therefore, be It
“Resolved, That Ihis grand Jury depre
cates the violation of law committed by
the parties killing said Wilson and re
grets not only the occurrence, but Its In
ability to secure evidence to bring the
guilty ones before us for Indictment."

Monsoon May Take Part In Coming
Interstate Raees.
Brunswick. Ga.. May 21.—After months
of patient and costly labor, the builders
to-day turned over lo F. D. M. Strachan
his to-be famous yacht Monsoon, and she
■was launched in the presence of a large
dumber of ladles and enthusiastic yachts
men. The Monsoon is to go to Savan
nah soon for a trial race with the Dra
goon of the Savannah Yacht Club, of
■Which Mr. Strachan is a member. The
trial races with the Dragoon will decide
which tiont will be pitted by the Savan
nah Yacht Club against the Charleston
yacht Maris in the coming summer races.
-This afternoon a party composed of
Mr. and Mrs. Strachan, Col. and Mrs.
J. E. dußignon, Miss Josephine dußlg
non, Mesdames Hugh Boner, White, Ray
mond and a number of others, gathered
around the Monsoon, and as she rode
proudly down the ways into ihe water,
little Master Sam Cann of Savannah,
nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Strachan, broke
across her bow a bottle of champagne,
exclaiming as the wine mingled with the
first salts from the bay these words: “I
christen thee Monsoon and wish you much
eucoess.” The little fellow retained the
next of the wine bottle and this will be
mounted with silver and placed in the
Monsoon's cabin.
The yacht Is one of the most beautiful
ever seen in Southern waters. Davis of
Quincy, Mass., the famous designer, for
merly with the Rudder, is her designer,
aid she is built to clean up anything in
t' e South. Her frame is oak with yellow
plr.e planking, cypress decks, black wal
nut cabin, oak rails, painted white with
gi t concave one and a half inches wide.
Site Is 14 feet beam, 51 feet long, beautl
ful’y sparred and carries a cloud of ean
'esg. the Jib and mainsail alone having
2 1(0 square feet. She has a cast iron keel
weighing 5,600 pounds, and is designed to
rbn in any kind of weather. Local yachts
men are very proud of the Monsoon and
(xpect her to carry off the honors In the
Interstate races.

Athens, Ga., May 21.—Messrs. T. S.
Mell, J. W. Baker. C. W. Parr, G. E.
Stone and H. L. Cook left to-d-ay for Way
cross to attend the session of the Grand
Lodge of Odd Fellows. Mr. Mell will in
•11 probability be elected as grand master
tor the next year.
There is a strong rumor afloat that Capt.
Wiley B. Burnett, recently nominated as
representative from Clarke county in the
General Assembly of Georgia, will be a
candidate for speaker of the next House
of Representatives. Many of Capthin Bur
nett's friends are urging him to make
the race and he has the matter under
consideration. He has promises of support
from many friends In different sections
of the state.
A few days since Rob Roy Harden, an
old darkey, died in this dity. He was
nearly ninety years of age. In his youth
he knew John Howard Payne, the author
of "Home Sweet Home,” who frequently
Called in Athens to see his sweetheart,
Miss Mary Harden. Payne gave Miss
Harden the original copy of “Home,
Bweet Home,” and she kept it until her
death. After her death it iouid never be
found. When Mr. Payne came to Athens
It was the duty of this negro, Rob Roy
Harden, (o wait on him, and in that way
he came to know a great deal of the
character of the great author.
Dr. E. B. Lyndon’s two new mills have
been finished. One is a plaining mill and
the other is a bobbin mill. Both are now
In operation and employ about forty
hands.
Saturday Mr. Joe Gatins, of the Univer
sity, while experimenting with nitric acid
In the chemical laboratory, was severely
burned on the hand.

Object of Gov. Candler's Trip to tlie
National Capital.
Atlanta, May 21.—Gov. Candler, accom
panied by his son and private secretary,
W. D. Candler, left Saturday night for
Washington, D. C., and will not return
till Thursday.
The Governor goes to press two back
claims owing the state by the national
government, one of which Is for the equip
ment of the Georgia regiments for the
Bpanish-Amerlean war. The total equip
ment footed up over $30,000, all of which
fcH been paid except about $16.u00. he
other claim recently passed the House,
and It is said the Governor has gone to
Washington to press Its passage before
the Senate.
The Governor will leave Monday, May
28, for Louisville, Ky., to attend'the Con
federate Veterans’ Reunion. As the only
Southern Governor who Is a veteran, the
Governor will occupy a conspicuous place
In the reunion exercises.

NEGRO ASSAILANT CAUGHT.
To Prevent Any Trouble Moran Was
Taken to Atlanta.
Rome, Ga., May 21.—John Moran, alias
Morgan, a young negro man, who at
tempted to assault Mrs. Abner Camp, sis
ter-in-law of Sheriff E. Camp, last week,
was captured In Chattooga county and
brought to the city to-day by a fanner,
who was paid the reward of $l5O.
The deed was attempted on the farm
on which she lives, about eight miles
from Rome, while her husband and all
the family were absent. Her screams
frightened the negro away. The negro
was placed in the county Jail. There was
some talk of lynching, but Officer Broach
and Taylor left here late this afternoon
with Moran for Atlanta.
The negro was quietly slipped out of a
eide entrance to the Jail, placed in a bug
gy and driven to the outskirts of the
city. By previous arrangement the 4:30
o'clock Rome train was flagged and the
officers and prisoner got aboard. This
was all accomplished through the cool
ness and headwork of Deputy Sheriff
Donohue, and no one knew it until to
night.
Judge Henry has ordered the January
grand jury to assemble Friday morning
at 11 o’clock end a panel of traverse jur
ors has been summoned. Moran will then
be brought'back here for trial. There Is
no excitement whatever here to-night.
WOODWARD MAY STAY IN.
He Refused to Resign and Connell
Took No Action.
Atlanta, May 21.—1 t looks now as if
Mayor Woodward will serve out his term
of office without further molestation. The
Council met this afternoon and the Mayor
sent the following communication In re
ply to Its request for him to resign his
office:
“Atlanta, Ga., May 21.—T0 the General
Council; Gentlemen—l have given your
request for my resignation careful and
conscientous consideration and am con
vinced that the public Interest make it
my duty to continue to fill the office to
which the people elected me. Respect
fully submitted,
“J. G. Woodward, Mayor.”
When the communication was read
Mayor Pro Tern. Mayson asked what dis
position should be made of 11. There was
no response and he ordered the paper
filed.
The Council proceeded with the regular
routine work and adjourned without tak
ing any action on the matter. It Is said
that the Mayor had fourteen votes pledg
ed to stick by him, enough for him to win
cut.
RESERVES SAIL ON PRAIRIE.

Brunswick. Ga., May 21.—The cruiser
Prairie with Commander Aiken of the
Georgia Naval Reserves Battalion and
both divisions of the Brunswick Reserves,
left hero to-day for a six days training
cruise along the coast. The torpedo divis
ion and three officers and the First Divis
ion and one officer, with a total of about
fifty men, constitute the Reserves on
board. The Savannah Reserves did not go
as expected, and the Prairie will go direct
from Brunswick to Chesapeake bay.
The May term of the Superior Court
convened here to-day with a big docket
for Judge Bennet. The grand Jury was or
ganized with David Keller, foreman, and
C. W. Demlng clerk. The session promises
to be extremely Interesting.

Columbus, Ga., May 21.—News was re
ceived of a killing in Chattahoochee cofin
ty Saturday. Shep Nlchokon and wife
quarreieel and shortly after they entered
their house a gun shot was heard. When
the neighbors rushed In they found Nich
olson dead with a bullet hole In his head.
His wife declared that he had tried to
shoot her, but had accidentally shot him
self Instead, but the fact that the wound
was In the back of his head, and that Ihe
gun was found standing up In the corner,
would Indicate that the woman did the
deed. The woman has been held for ex
amination.

whether the railroads can charge that

Southern \\ ltolesalers Will Meet la
Charleston.
Charleston, S. C., May 21.—The ninth
annual meeting of the Southern Whole
sale Grocers' Association will convene in
this city on Thursday morning, May 24.
These meetings are usually attended by
representatives of the wholesale grocery
trade from eleven Southern states.
The approaching meeting will consider
many questions of vital interest to the
grocery trade and a large attendance is
expected.
The visking merchants will be officially
welcomed to the city by Mayor J. Adger
Smith, Thursday. On the following an
excursion around the harbor will be ten
dered them and they will be entertained
at night at the Isle of Palms.
NEGRO KILLED HIS WIFE.
Negroes Rushed From Ihe Chnroh
Crying “Lynch Him.”
Charleston, May 21.—Last night at Edge
field, this state, within the shadow of a
negro church where services were being
conducted, Ed Brooks, colored, shot and
Instantly killed his wife, the pistol ball
entering her head. As soon as the alarm
was given the negroes rushed from the
church en masse crying "Lynch him!”
Cooler heads hurried off Brooks to jail and
thus averted a double tiagedy.
Two years ago Brooks killed an aged
negro, and two days ago he threatened the
life of his wife.
Shot by Drunken Negro.
Rome. Ga., May 21.—At Cave Spring this
morning while attempting to arrest a ne
gro named Ben Hammond, who was
drunk and had a gun, T. H. O'Brien, a
ral road contractor was shot in the neck
and breast. His wounds are not serious
but painful.
