TIMOTHY TITCOIIR’S LETTERS TO
YOUNG MARRIED PEOPLE.
Young wife, I talked to your hushand, and
now 1 address you. 1 told him that you liave a
claim on his time and society. There are qual
ifications of that claim which concern your par
ticularly, so I speak to you about them. Your
husband labors all day—every day—and dar
ing the waking hours, lictwecn the conclusion
of his labors at night and commencement in the
morning, he must have recreation of some kind;
and here comes in your duty. If you do not
make his home pleasant, so that thc’fufilUment
of his duty to you shall be a sweet pleasure to
him, you cannot hope for much of his company.
What his nature craves it will have—must have.
He cannot be a slave all the time—« slave to his
work by day, and a slave to vou by night • He
mast have hours of freedom; 'and happy are you,
if, of his own choice, he take the enjoyment you
ofTer in the place of anything which the outside
world has to give. 1 suppose there are a few
men who, when their work is over and their
supper eaten, do not have a desire to go down
town “to meet a man,” or visit ‘the hotcL”
There is a natural desire in every heart to have
every day an hour of social freedom—a few
minutes, at least, of walk in the open air and
contact with the minds of other men. This is
entirely a natural and necessary thing; and
you should encourage rather than seek to pre
vent it, unless your husband is inclined to visit
bad places and'associatc with Lad companions.
Precisely here is a dangerous point for both
husband and wife. The wife lias been alone du
ring the day, and thinks that her hashand ought
to spend the whole evening with her. * The hus
band has been confined to his labor, and longs
for an hour of freedom, in whatever direction

dows you simply with a stewardship. You |
have no right to waste it, or to part with it, for
anything but such values as are consistent with ;
his means. You have consented to be the part
ner of his life, and you have no more right to
squander his money than his business partner
has. It is your duty to hashand it; and happy
are you if your companion has such confidence
in your faithfulness to him and his interests,
that he puts money in your hand always wil
lingly, believing that it will be parted with ju
diciously, and with discreet and conscientious
regard to his means and abilities. If your hus
hand has no confidence in your economy and
discretion, and consequently'stints you, and ab
solutely feels obliged_to place you in the posi
tion of a favorite "dependent and pensioner—a
plaything or a housekeeper, for whom he has
got to pay—you are not happy, by any means.
You can do very much in your character of
helpmate to lighten your husband’s cares and
relieve him from anxieties. If he finds you
looking closely after his interests, buying eco
nomically the food for his table, and never
wastefuliy sacrificing your old dresses in con
sequence of your thirst for new, always count
ing the cost' of every object you may desire,
you relieve his mind from a load of care which
no man carry without embarrassment A man
who feels that there is in his own lioase a leak
which will absorb all he may earn, be that little
or much, and that he has got to suffer it, and
suffer from it, or institute restrictioas that will
probably make him appear mean in thc eyes of
his wife (wasteful wives are very apt to have
mean husbands), thc great stimulas and encour
agement of his industry arc taken away from
him.
The full appreciation of your character as your
husband's helpmate depends upon him. Of this
I have talked before, and call it up again for thc
purpose of showing you tliat there is absolutely
no aspect of your relation to him which can be
considered legitimate and complete that docs not
involve the identification. It is an equal thing.
You are interested in your husband’s expendi
tures, and he is interested iu yours. You have
cast in your lot together—your whole lot, and
he has no more right to expend his money in
such a way as to embarrass you, and deprive
you of what you need, than you have to squan
der the means which he places at your disposal.
It is a partnership concern, and if you succeed
in managing your dcjtartment of it in such a
way as to secure your husband's confidence,
Curly considering the cost of every cent to him,
he will feel that he Is appreciated, honored, and
loved. Very likely he will understand this bet
ter than tasteful comforts and tender demon
strations of a lighter nature—demsnstrations
that involve no self-denial.

The Postmaster General has ordered that all
"supplements” or “extras” folded within regu

conveying intelligence of passing events ami
general intelligence—subject the whole package
to letter postage. As the Postoffice Department
lias for several years been thc subject of many
animadversions on account of the excess of its
cost over the revenue accruing from it, the at
tention of its officers has been directed to thc
various classes of fraud to which it is subjected,
and every effort will be made to prevent them
in future. From the carlessncss of local post
masters in allowing such violatioas of thc rules
as that aliovc mentioned, and others of similar
character, and from illegal uses of the franking
privilege, it Ls without doubt true that the Gov

money which would accrue from a rigid enforce

in the aggregate, to tliat of the excess of expen

from it Under the present excellent manage

DAILY FEDERAL L.\IO.\.
The proprietors of the Federal Union, will is
sue a Daily Paper during the approaching Leg
islature, if they receive sufficient encouragement
from the public. A Daily paperat the SeatofGov-
emment, especially during the sittings of the
Legislature, is a public want, which we are de
termined to supply, if we are not to suffer too
much in pocket, by the experiment. Such an
enterprise cannot be carried on without money.
To the public then we appeal for support. The
Daily Federal Union will be in size and type,'
and in all other respects save the amount of
reading matter, similar to the Weekly Federal
Union. It will contain abstracts of the proceed
ings of thc Legislature each day, and of such
debates as may be of general importance. It
will also contain late Telegraphic Intelligence,
the state of the Markets, Ac. Thc price of the
paper for the Session will 'be ONE DOLLAR,
to be paid in advance.
4Ye want all those who feel interested, and
willing to assist us in this enterprise,to inform
us, at once, what number of copies they will
subscribe for, so that we can, at as early a day
as possible, determine whether we will publish
the Daily. No money will be required until
we receive names, and determine whether we
can be sustained in its publication.

to know what his public servants arc doing,

There is one relation which you bear to your

to which I have not alluded sufficiently. You
are not onlv thc wife of his bosom—the object
of his affections—but you liave a business rela
tion with him—you are his helpmate. To a
very great extent you are dependent upon him,
but you are also his assistant—bound to use
his money economically, and to aid, so fitr as
you can, in saving and accumulating it The
woman who feels that she has a right to spend
every cent that “the old man" allows her, and
that all she gets out of him is hers to lavish up
on her vanities, takes a.very low view of her
relations to him. It is simply the view ofa
mistress, and is utterly dishonorable—utterly
mercenary. ^ , . .
The money which he puts into yourband en-

ation in the application of metallic conductors,
that metallic substances have not exclusively in
themselves any more attractive influence for the
agency of 1 ightning than any other kinds of com
mon matter; but that, on the contrary, by con
fining and restraining thc electrical discharge
within a very narrow limit, the application of a
small rod or wire of metal to a given portion of
a building L« in reality highly objectionab’e.—
Besides, the application of an ordinary lightning-
rod is of a very partial character; it has very
small electrical capacity, and is very often
knocked to pieces by heavy discharges of light
ning. To secure such a building as the new palace
at Westminster agaiast lightning Sir W. Snow
Harris considers it requisite to complete thc gen
eral conduetibility of the whole mass, and so
bring it into that passive or non-resisting state
which it would assume in respect of the electrical
discharge, supposing the whole were a complete
mass of electricity.
