Savannah Market. Uepublicax Office, } Saturday, Oct. 10, -1 P. M. i COTTON.'—There was a much better de will lie made by the United States through Judge Bowlin. So far from President Lopez having the most remote idea of acceding to these demands, it is thought by those who ought to know, that Judge Bowlin will not lie allowed to enter Paraguay Territory, but will be received at the extreme Southern limits of the Republic and sent back from whence he came. There is little probability tlint Lopez will permit a steam er to ascend the river, and thereby give those on board an opportunity to view his means of defence, and even should he be ever so willing, it is not likely that he will remove tlie obstruc tions which will lie placed in the river before Judge B’s arrival. The river will lie exten sively 1 loomed and chained. Kxtcnsive earth works are being constructed, it is well known, along both banks of the river, and before reach ing Assumption the fleet (supposing them able to remove the obstructions in tlie river and dis mantle the earth-work batteries) will liavc to silcnce,a fort or mloubtjmounting 40 heavy guns'. In approaching this rcboubt, the fleet of steam ers xvill receive a raking lire for the distance of charge is absurd. It is further still more strange*- half a mile. This redoubt is placet! on an eleva tion about sixty feet above the level of Uie river. Suppose then, the possibility of passing the above redoubt, the Musquito Fleet has nothing more to do hut reduce a fort a short distance south of Assumption that mounts 04 guns, 42 pounders. This fort Is also on an elevated ground, being one hundred feet above tlie level of the river. Opposite this fort there are two clianncls, one along cither embankment, there being a shoal in the middle of the river, and the American vessels being iu the channel on the opposite side to the fort, will not lie able, through the narrowness of the river, to bring their guns to licar, as too great an elevation will be required. Ben, I will give you five dollars if you will kill that man next to me who snores so dread fully.” "Can’t kill him for five dollars, but if mas- sa will advance on the price. I’ll far what I can do." By this time the stranger had ceased his nasal fury. Tlie other was now to be quieted. So stepping to him he woke him, and said : " My friend, (lie knew who he was) you’re talking in your sleep, and exposing all the se crets of the Brandon Bank, (he was a director,) you had better he careful.” He was careful, for he did not go to sleep that night The highest salary ofa Governor of any State in the Union Is paid in California—ten thousand dollars, and the lowest is in Vermont—seven hundred and fifty dollars.
