Rev. J. II. Graves,
In my former letters I informed you of the
course of Rev. J. R. Graves and his friends of
the 1st Baptist Church. The result was that
after his trial and conviction by the other wing
of the church, two sets of delegates were sent up
to the General Association at Lebanon, and that
body decided in favor of admitting the Graves
delegation. The friends of Dr, Howell presen
ted a long protest, with the miuesL that it be
entered on the minutes, which tcis refused.
So Dr. Graves is likely to be sustained after
all! . In haste,

passed in it. During the school hours singing
was sometimes employed as a relaxation, and

Tlie following paragra]>h in the Vice Presi
dent's letter alluded to last week, defines his po
sition in the Illinois controversy:—
The other rumor to which you refer is true.
I have often, in conversation, expressed the wish
that Mr. Douglas may succeed over his Repub
lican competitor. But it is due to candor to
say, that this preference is not founded on his
course at the late session of Congress, and would
not exist if I Supposed it would be construed as
an indorsement of the attitude which he then
chose to assume toward his party, or of all the
positions he has taken in the present canvass,
it is not necessary to enlarge on these tilings.
I will only add, that my preference rests mainly
on these considerations: that the Kansas ques
tion is practically ended—that Mr. Douglas, in
recent speeches, has explicitly declared his ad
herence to the regular Democratic party organ
ization—that he seems to be the candidate of
the Illinois Democracy, and the most formida
ble opponent in that State of the Republican
party, and that on more than one occasion du
ring his public life he has defended the Union
of tlie States and the rights of ihe States with
fidelity, courage and great ability.
Temerity vs Pestilence.
Tlie N. O. Crescent of the 25th pit, in an elo
quent note of wanting to strangers to keep a
way from that city, till frost, narrates the fol
lowing sail incidents illustrative of tlie perils en
countered by unaedimated jiersons entering
New Orleans in Yellow Fever times:—
tin Monday last a gentleman coming into the
city from Osyka, found himself sitting r/x-n-m
with a cnuqmny of strangers in whom lie became
interested, t In inquiry, he found the party con
sisted of four youths from Kentucky, going to
New Orleans to seek their fortune. “Arc yon
not afraid of the fever J” said our friend. “We
did not know the danger when we started,” was
the reply. "I advise'you,” said our friviui, “to
take tni* return cars for Jackson, or you will
doubtless soon lie occupants of our gravoyariL”
“We had rather die than go liack,” was the
answer. They came. Our friend followed them
to their boarding house, and watched their fate.
Three of them have been buried; the fourth
cannot survive.”
Incidents like the foregoing are not, unfortun
ately, rare. They occur during every epidemic,
and will, we suppose, occur (luring every suc
ceeding epidemic for nil time to come. Even
sadder incidents are frequently brought to the
attention of the actively philanthropic and lie-
nevolent Married |icople with their children,
wholly raw and unaedimated, from the North
and West, often come here during the heighth
of epidemics for the purpose of bettering their
fortunes—at least we can imagine no other mo
tive. Tlie father takes sick and (lies. The
mother takes sick and dies. Tlie children Like
sick also, and perhaps one of them recovers,
and becomes a destitifte orphan in a strange
land, to he consigned, if not claimed hy distant
relatives, to same one of our many excellent
philanthropic institutions, or to take the pre
carious and demaralpting chances of the streets.
Sometimes the father dies, and leaves a helpless
widow and large family of children to huflet a-
gainst the storms of a hard world. Sometimes
all die. Not long since a married couple and
two children arrived from the West. In four
days all were taken: and although every atten
tion wits paid them, not a week elapsed before
all were carried to the cold and silent tomb by
pitying strangers! What a lesson—what a
commentary—this ought to be!

It will be seen by extracts which wc give else
where from the French and English journals,
that a strong feeling of excitement has been a-
wakened in France and England by information
received there to the effect that tlie United
States hail sent vessels to the waters of Nicara
gua, to coerce the government of that republic in
to a refusal to ratifv tlie contract made with Air.
Felix Belly for the" opening of an interoceanic
ship canal. That intelligence was also aggrava
ted by a report of a new filibustering expedition
la ing tilted out by Walker against the State or
Central America, W bile entire faith seems not
to have been given to this intelligence, the pa-
|hts, nevertheless, improve the occasion to read
lectures to the United States upon its national
characteristic of annexation, and to notify us that
we need not Ukc any open or RH-rct means to

inasmuch as the maritime nations of Europe
would not for a moment tolerate such an assump

ing counties, for their liberal and extensive patron
age. While he begs a continuance of their favors,
he will state to those who do not know him, that ma
ny years practice in the principal cities of the South

A WORD ABOUT THE
’ CHEAP STYLE OF WORK."
Persons needing Dental Operations or Artificial
Teeth, and not able to pav me my regular prices,
may feel assured that I will rather share my profits
with them than “accommodate” them with a cheap,
or inferior style of work, as such will never giv*» sat
isfaction, and is the dearest at the end.
All persons desiring my services will please call at
my Residence, in Ferry, where they will find all the
comforts of a first-rate Dental Office. Families liv
ing at a distance may procure my services by giving
me notice.
Dentists will find a large assortment of the best
materials, for tilling Teeth, as well as for making ar-
tificialsets, at Northern prices.
