be told that there was but one place in Boston
where it could be done, and that was the store
of (the other partner), who sold goods to
tho infiuite disgust of the entire trade. Tbe
same process was carried on at the other store,
and the consequence has been that both to-
golber, each playing into-the other’s hands,
have done an immense business and realized
large profits.
Unexpected Result of Eloquence.—A
German clergyman by wayfikf giving point to
a eulogy of a dead man at a funeral, declared
that his own experience would prove that llie de
funct was the most generous of men, ns he had
long ago borrowed forty dollars of him, of
which to his dying day he had never asked the
payment. Qf tne debt thus acknowledged
before witnesses, however, the heirs tho next
day. demanded the payment with interest.
A New Business.—Mr Harrison, of Key
West, has recently opened an establishment in
which he puts up turtle soup, catipee, calipash,
and stock for soup in hermetically sealed cans,
which may be transported to any distance, or
taken as ship stores on long voyages, remaining
in perfectly good condition for a great length of
time! This will be a good substitute for the
uuliappy turtles wbicli wo so oficu soc lying
passively on their pack, with the flippers pini
oned to their sides, sighing and pining for their
native clement, "‘with a green and yellow mel
ancholy" painful to contemplate.
A few weeks ago an accident occurred on tho
Memphis and Charleston Railroad. A passen
ger car was thrown off and smashed. Among
the passengers was the venerable ex Governor
Mathews. Now he had provided himself with
a bran new suit of clothes, especially for Christ
mas, which everybody knows Is remarkable.
The “copperas, breeches,” wool hat, etc, left at
home, and the Governor that morning was rig
ged up in real prim style. But the clothes
came out of the crash looking 4ecidedly worse
for the wear. “I congratulate you. Governor
upon not being hurt.” said a friend. “Ilurt,
thunder, just look at these new clothes! —Fra-

John Kettiewell, Esq.;
Dear Sir:—Yonr favor of the 19th instant, asking
my experience in the nse of yonr “ Manipulated Gu-
uno” is just to hand—I reply, with pleasure: I have
ased five tons of it in the growth of cotton on both
old and fresh lands of mulatto soil, and the result is,
that, on the former, where without tbe use of your
guano, I have made 200 lbs. of seed cotton per acre
with it—I will gather this year—which has been one
of such drought that cotton will be oat at least one
third short on my plaoe—400 lbs. per acre, and on
the latter, the increase of yield will be about 2 to 1.
I am satisfied, that if the season had been more
favorablo.tho result wonld have been more manifest.
There can be no question bnt tnat your “ Manipula
ted Guano” is «n admirable manure—its cheapness
over the Peruvian Guano, together with its adapted-
ness to the productior of cotton, will certainly re
commend it to the cotton planters I expect to nse
it much more liberally .on toy next year's crop.

John Kettiewell, Esq.-,
Dear Sir:—In reply to your tetter of 14th lust., in
which yon make the request that l should give yon
•• the results of my experience with yonr Manipula
ted Guano, especially in comparison with the Peru
vian, both as it regards quality and quantity.”
For the last two years, I have used yonr No. 1
Manipulated G nano largely for my fanning purpo
ses, and iu various experiments to test it with the
best Peruvian in quantity and quality. They have-
been conducted with great minuteness, and in every
instance the Manipulated Guano has proved superi
or to the Peruvian alone—the growth of the plant
being more vigorous, and the product heavier.—
This result was more particularly applicable to corn;
: yet, as to other crops, say barley, oats, Ac., the su
periority of the Manipulated was spparent. I think
it a stronger and a cheaper manure—cheaper, be
cause it requires less to the acre, and also on account
of difference in price. I therefore nse it in prefer
ence to Peruvian, on all my crops. Not planting
cotton, I have no personal experience of its effects
on that plant. Yours, very reapectfullv,

In reply to your inquiry I with pieasuro state, that
sometime in the early part of this year, the Inspec
tors at this Warehouse sold for Mr. F. It. Wills, a
successful farmer of Prince George’s, and a gentle
men of high character and undoubted integrity,
two lota of loose tobacco, one of which as stated by
him was made on land where Manipulated Guano
had been used and the other where Peruvian Gnano
bad been used; the former bringing 69J per cwt.,
tlie latter only 87. As indicateaby the prices there
was a very marked difference in the two lots so far
as to the quality and character of tbe tobacco ; that
of the former being heavier and rich; of the latter,
then, bony, course and poor.
In addition, I will state, that so far asti am inform
ed, the tobacco grown on land where Kettlewell’s
Manipulated Gnano has been used, is generally of a
snpenor quality, and consequently several of our
large tobacco growers are now using this guano on
their tobacco crop in preference to other manures.
Very respectfully yours,
