this very dentist, had rendered irreparable. It
seems t&at Lord S.... never dreaiSt of such a

and graces which still held his soul captive in
the person of his lovelv wife. The bill from the
dentist came in while Lord S.... was present
The poor lady finding no other means of con
cealing the horrid truth from my lord, boldly
denied the debt, and sent the messenger empty
away, fully intending to take advantage of the
first moment of liberty to run out unseen and
discharge it, as she had hitherto done. But the
dentist himself had grown so nervous about his
money, that, in less than an hour, he appeared
himself before the astonished Englishman, to
claim his fee; whereupon the indignant husband
thrust the impertinent claimant neck and crop
out of the apartment
But so well-dressed a man as the dentist was
not to be conquered in this way. The next
morning, while at breakfast the conjugal couple
were vastly bewildered by the entrance of a
gentleman, followed by two huissiers, who con
cluded his preface of compliments and regrets
by the proffer of the modest request that Lady
S.... would open her mouth wide enough for
him to look down her throat! Fancy the storm
of indignation raised in the bosom of the Eng
lishman! lie raised his gold egg-spoon, with
which lie was at the moment armed, with a
gesture of horror—my lady burst into tears—
her falsehoods were all discovered—she had no
more in store to cover them. She owned, blush-
ingly, to Lord S.... that she stood responsible
for the debt “Not myself of course, my lore;
it is for Lady P...., who has worn false teeth

What could be done? Lord S.... grumbled

Peruvian Guano contains 16 per cent Ammonia
and only 25 to 30 per cent Phosphate of Lime. By
reducing the costly Ammonia one-half, and doubling
the Phosphate of Lime, a far more valuable Fertili
zer must be produced. It has been demonstrated
that 8 per cent of Ammonia is enough for all crops—
more is injurious, besides expensive. Indeed, many
prefer the So. 2 Manipulated Guano, because it con
tains a larger per centage of Phosphate of Lime;
the simple reasou why Cotton Seed is go valuable a

SOUTH CAROLINA—COTTON AND CORN.
Abbivills, 25th Oct. 1858.
John Kettlewell, Esq.;
Dear Sir:—Your favor of the 19th instant, asking
my experience in the use of your “ Manipulated Gu-
uno” is just to hand—I reply, with pleasure: I have
ased five tons cf it in the growth of cotton on both
old and fresh lands of mulatto soil, and the result is,
that, on the former, where without the use of your
guano, I have made 200 lbs. of seed cotton per acre
with it—I will gather this year—which has been one
of snch drought that cotton will be cut at least one
third short on my place—400 ibs. per aero, and on
the latter, the increase of yie'd will be about 2 to 1.
I am satisfied, that if the season had been more
favorable, the resnlt would have been more manifest.
There can be no question but tnat your “ Manipula- j
red Guano” is an admirable manure—its cheapness
over the rernvian cruanu, logvibn eirfa-tt.-d^>i«a
ness to the production of cotton, will certainly re-;
commend it to the cotton planters I expect to use;
it much more liberally on my next year’s crop.

Charleston, Oct. 27tb, 1858
John Kettlewell, Esq.;
Dear SirIu reply to your letter of 14th inst., in |
which you make the request that I should give you ■
“ tbe results of my experience with your Manipula-.
ted Guano, especially in comparison with the Peru- i
vian, both as it regards quality anil quantity.” |
For the lost two years, 1 havo -used your No. 1 -
Manipulated Guano largely for my farming purpo-.
ses, and in various experiments to test it with thc ,
best Peruvian in quantity and quality. They have
been conducted with great minuteness, aud iu every j
instance the Manipulated Gnano has proved superi
or to the Peruvian alone—the growth of the plant!
being more vigorous, and the product heavier.— i
This result waa more particularly applicable to com ; *
yet, as to other crops, say barley, oats, ftc., the su
periority ofthe Manipulated was apparent. I think I
it a stronger and a cheaper manure—cheaper, be-1
cause it requires less to the acre, and also on account j
of difference in price. I therefore use it in prefer-
ence to Peruvian, on all my crops. Not planting ;
cotton, I have no personal experience of its effects .
on that plant. Y’onrs, very respectfully,
