opposed the bill, being the only paper of that
city which noticed it, suggested that it is un

In Bibfi Const,, op the IStfi instant, by the Rer.
James E. Evans, Mr. Charles E. Carnes, and
Miss Julia Ann Bodges, youngest daughter of J.
Jsseph Hodges, Esq-
On Thursday evening, the 5th instant, at tho re
sidence of Mrs- Sarah Weed, by the Rev. Dr. Her
denburg. Dr. Edward Fitzgerald, to Miss Louisa M.,
daughter of the late E. B. Weed,
for the river at Memphis was reported to be
rising, and and a rise was coming down from
most of the upper streams. The St. Louis
Democrat of the 6th says:
The river was rising all day yesterday, at
the rate of one inch per hour, and the total
rise up to 6 P. M., yesterday, was three feet.
At the hour named, the river continued to rise
at the same rapid rate. So rapi,d and un
expected was the rise that along the whole edge
of the levee, freight, in the shape of barrels,
boxes, bales, lumber, etc., were submerged,
and the process of extricating the submerged
freight presented a busy scene. The rise is
entirely from the Missouri, which rose last
Saturday six feet at St. Joseph, astonishing
the good people of that village. A mountaineer
who came down the Missouri to Omaha in a
skiff, says there is a big rise coming from the
mountains, and he saw a great deal of snow on
the ground, If this is the June rise, it is pre
mature. What is to become of that part of the
south bordering on tfie lower Mississippi ?
Numbers of plantations qre covered by the
Mississippi already. Crevasses exist in abun
dance, and yet there is an immense freshet go
ing down from tho Clhio; tfie Cumberland is
booming; thp Mississippi is swelling rapidly,
and perhaps some of tl*e southern tributaries
of thi9 river are on the rise. Ileayy rains have
fallen on the Cumberland, which was swelling
rapidly all along, as the B. M- Kunyqn came
down. Heavy rains have fallen all over ihe
country hereabouts^
Negro Character.—A friend of ours, a
gentleman who has an interest in a store in the
country, not a thousand miles from here, told
us the other day of a conversation lie overheard
between a oolored proacber and other darkies
of a more worldly character. It seems that
the negroes of the neighborhood had been in
the habit of bringing cordwood to the store and
exchanging it for clothes and sundry other ar
ticles, attractive to negro eyes. Thr
ing situated on a line of railroad, the
could turn his bartering to a profit by selling
this wood to the company for freight fuel. On
one occasion this negro preacher was hi the
gang who came down to exchange wood for
finery. The preacher condemned the taste of
his vain-glorious brethren in selliug wood for
gorgeous apparel, and ventured to lecture them
upon what he deemed a practice 40 sinful. He
