The Field or Alagoi.tin.
|The special Correspondent of the London Ken.]
Yesterday evening, not without gn at ditTieul
ty, I succeeded in getting hero to i aspect the
field of the glorious battle fought on Saturday
last My pen is not adequate to describe tho
heart-rending scene which surrounils me.—
Trees thrown down by tho dreadful elfcet of ar
tillery; heaps of dead bodies, human limbs scat
tered about, carriages broken, farm hous-is burnt,
crops trampled, vineyards devastated,-houses
plundered—such is the deplorable sight which
has met my eyes since my arrival in this town.
Town, however. Magenta is no more. The small
inn whence I am now writing these lines bears
marks of the tremendous struggle, for it was
tliricc taken and retaken during the action.—
Not a piece of furniture is to be found; not even
a chair to sit upon. Some of the details I sent
you on Sunday were not* quite correct The
field guns captured by our troops were not
twenty, but four. I was led into an error by a
man who showed me some other guns which
were captured at Palcstro and Borgo Vercelli.
1 he battle of Magenta was not begun by our
troops, hut by the Austrians, who, although in
full retreat towards Pavia, were ordered to
change their front and attack our advanced
guard, which had crossed the Ticino at Buffalo-
ra. One hattaliion of the Zouaves and two com
panies of the same regiment, together with two
regiments of Grenadiers, all belonging to the
Imperial Guard, were suddenly attacked by
25,000 Austrians tinder the orders of General
Zobel. Ow gallant allies had three batteries
with them, but only two Hold pieces were brought
to play upon the advancing columns of the ene
my. loti must not forget that tho country
which lies between, this village and Abbiate
Grasso is intersected by numberless canals which
supply the water to the rice field* of the dis
trict. All these fields had been of course inun
dated for agricultural purposes, so the guns of
our advanced guard could not he placed except
on the main rc.s<l ; which by the by is veiy nar
row, and by which the Austrians were advan
cing. The right wing of the French advanced
guard thus attacked, was formed’by tho sbpvc
mentioned troops. Five other companies of
Zouaves of tho imperial Guard were marching

Milan.—Milan, the capital of Lombardy, has
a population of about 1 GO,000 persons, not in
cluding tho Austrian garrison and the strangers
temporarily resident there, It is situated Tr a
wide open plain, between theOlona and Saveso
rivers, tributaries of tho river Po. It has boon
the scene of many a conflict of arms between
rival nations, and has, at different times, been
under tlib dominion of Sgaip, f ranee and Aus
tria. It was twice captured by the French, and
in 1805 the first Napoleon made it' the capital
of the kingdom of Italy. By the treaty of 1815
it waa restored to Austria, with the adjbihjng |
territory.
Milan is a yery ancient city, being founded \

Parents, React.
In all cities and large towns, a great hue and cry
is frequently made in reference to adulterated and
manufactured milk, and os being prejudicial to the
health of children, Ac., Ac. There is no doubt, no
little truth in thia matter, hut should minute inves
tigation be made as regards the cause ot the puny
and sickly condition of children, it would he ascer
tained beyond a doubt that the exhibition of delete
rious drugs in the shape of Paregoric, Laudanum,
Anodyne Drops, Cordials, Ac., have had more to do
with the weak and sickly condition of children than
any \l effects of adulterated end manufactured milk.
In view of this fact, Prof. Roberts was prompted to
prepare a remedy expressly for childreu, and which
could be exhibited lor the relief of pain and suffer
ing without being followed by any of those evil
consequences which follow the exhibition of the
usually proscribed narcotic preparations. The pre
paration is known as “Robert’s Cholic Mixture for
Infants,” and during the many years that it has been
before the people, it has gained a reputation and no
toriety very seldom attained hy “patent'' prepara
tions. Every family should have it. Forsale by all

stout and muscular, has a very heavy chest.and weighs
probably 180 lbs. There i* a considerable sized ir
regular scar on his hack, (caused by a fall.) But ho
may he identified hy slight marks indicating the
points from which an extra finger (having been at
