Fowler, at the time, made a present of the pis

About 3 o’clock on Moodav afternoon, a tre

has ruined the crops, ii>r a space about two

part of the £oad, assured us that many of the
pellets ofic<r were as big as a goose egg, and he
showed us numbers which wero gathered at
three o’clock, and when wc saw them five hours
after, were over two inches in diameter.
He says he could have gathered hundreds of
bushels iu the ditches anil gullies, and in some
places they lay on the ground six inches deep,

LOUISIANA CONVENTION.
Baton Rougx, June 7.—Tlic Bolters’ Con
vention adjourned yesterday. They resolved,
that, in ca>c a withdrawal takes place at Balti
more, the Louisiana delegates be authorized to
unite with tho Richmond delegates.
GREAT TORNADO.
Augusta, Ga., June 6.—The tornado which
passed over Chicago was more destructive
than was at first supposed. It travelled nine
ty miles in Iowa, seventy miles in Illinois, and
extended to portions of Missouri and Ken
tucky. As far as known, over one hundred
and "fifty persons were killed, and proper
ty estimated at more than one million of dol
lars was destroyed. In one instance, a train
of ten cars was lifted from the track anti
dashed to pieces. It is impossible, in a short
dispatch to give the details.
A DUEL
Savannah, June fi,—A duel was fought tins
morning at Screven’s Ferry, hy Dr. W» R-
Ilolmes, of 'Waynesboro and L. A. Nelms, of
Warrenton,—weapons double barrel guns,
distance forty pin es. At the first fire Nelms
was seriously, though not fatally wounded,
and the proceedings suspended. The difficulty
grew out of the proceedings of a portion of the
citizens of Burke county, hanging the Charles
ton delegates who did not secede in effigy.—
Ilohnes was unhurt.

Dear Sirs—Yours of the 13th inst., has been re
ceived, its contents noted, 4c. In reply to your en
quiry iu regard to tbo Reese’s Manipulated Guano
as & fertilizer—1 tun well pleased so far aa I have
tested its nse. I applied abort 100 lbs. per aero on
land that was badly'worn, and not of the beat when
fresh. Tho product of tho field where tho Guano
was applied is over 800 lbs. of seed cot ton per acre.
The same kind of land without the Guano produced
about -too lbs. per acre. My mode of applying the
Guano was by depositing it in tho drill before bed
ding up tbe land, I havenottried ita use on corn,
but have no doubt but it willanccecd well. Ishall
use it pretty extensively on my next crop.
Yours Respectfully,
ISignedJ REUBEN WRIGHT.

I)eak Sirs—The Manipulated Guano bought of
you last Spring (Reese’s, I think it was,) I approve
of very much. At this time, as the crop is not ga
thered in, I cannot say as to what per cent. It w»H
pay, though the use of it on poor land pays a con
siderable per cent. I shall continue the use of A.
Respectfully your..
