Tnr. MtsaisstPi'i River Once Fordable.—A
fact wan revenlwi in Court at New Madrid, Slis-
souri, last week, which is not a little startling
in a scientific point of view, as tending to show
’ that tlio Mississippi of to-day is not the stream
it was half a oenlurjr ago. Ono of tho oldest
inhabitants of New Madrid slated on oath that
ho had known the river more than fifty years,
anti that when he first kucw it it was a much
smaller and shallower stream than it is now—
so shallow, indeed, that he had waded and for
ded it often. Several other old residents of New
Madrid confirmed this statement, and declare
that the river at that point, now more than a
mile, wide, was fordable half a century ago.

“ There is t*b object so beautiful to me as a

Josephine Hoojis, as she laid down the vol

A good joke is told of ono of the second order
of Jai«3cso officers. On Saturday he went in
to a hat lier’s shop near tho hotel, in order to
have his tonsuro . fresh shaven, which was oc-
eordingly done, and quite to his liking. On
leaving, ho paid tire barber in strict accordance
with tousorial prices in the Empire from which
he came, taking from his pouch and placing in
the hands of the barber one copper cash, eight
of which are equal to one cent. So doing, he
walked leisurely away.

MARVELOUS PHENOMENON.
Tho Russian correspondent of tho London
Telegraph writes thus:
“At Moscow, a physical phenomenon has
boon rcocntly observed, such as would have
given ris* to the creation of a whole eycle of
Cuitastic inytlis in the time of the world's in
fancy. We learn from a paragraph in the lead
ing paper of that city, tliat a quarter past ten,
»n tho night of the 1st and 2d of March, a star
to tho South-West of the Great Bear suddenly
commenced to wax larger, assuming at the same
lime, the color'd iron at a red lieat, but with
out the appearance of any sparks or rays. In
this condition the star appeared until half past
eleven, varying ifr the intensity of its light, and
attaining tiro size nearly of the half moon, A
little before midnight the dimness began to in
crease, and at 12 o’clock the star had disappear
ed. In its stead a sort of black speck was to
be noticed by the light of tho stars,’ which were
uuuuially brilliant tliat evening. It remains
for the astronomers to describe, and the poets
to tiiug, of the destruction of the luminary,
which, foy aught wo know, may have been tbe
abode of a race superior to our own:
