Particulars of tho Fort Hayal Fight
tVc glean from our Savannah and Charleston
exchanges the following items of the engage*
ment at Port Royal.
The Fort Walker armament consisted of six
teen guns, nine of which bore upon the ship
ping, tho balance being in position on the land
side. Fire or six of these guns, among them
the 24 pound ride cannon and one ten inch Co*
lumbiud, were disabled during the forenoon.
Thus disabled and their ammunition exhausted,
the garrison evacuated Fort Walker between
threu and four o’ciock, retiring in the direction
of Blullion, leaving the guns in position and
unspiked, having no spikes for that purpose.
Ciipt Jacob Reed’s artillery corps of the First
Georgia Regiment of Regulars arrived at the
scene of action on W ednesday night, and, on
yesterday bore a gallant part in the fight—
Four or five oi his men were killed early in the
__ action. The corps lost two of their guns and
'several horses. ~-
Col. Randolph Spaulding, Georgia Volun
tcer Regiment, commanded by Capb Berry,
were also in the engagement They wero
inarched to the beach where they received a
galling fire of round shot and shell from the
fleet, which, however, they were unable to re
turn with their muskets.
Col. \Vm. II. Stile’s Volunteer Georgia Regi
ment reached the scene of action at 11 o’clock
having marched from Skidaway, seven and a
halfnr.les distant, nt the double quick.' But
they were also unable to fire on the fleet, which
was out of the range of their guns. The Regi-
. went had several killed and wounded by shells
from the fleet ?>ur informant states that Col.
Styles had two horses shot under him, and in
the fall of one of them received a slight injury
in the shoulder. The Colonel and his Regi
ment was at one time exposed to a terrific shel
ling from the ships, and it is only surprising
that more of them wore not killed and wounded.
Col. Randolph Spaulding, not being in corn
maud of the Regiment, joined n corps belonging
to another Regiment, and cngtigeddn the fight,
as far as it was possible for the infantry to par
ticipate in it, with his innsKet on his shoulder.
Between 11 and 12 o’clock, twelve vessels en
gaged the forts, five of them first class steam
frigates, the oilier seven were second class
steamers, with a tug leading. The tug opened
fire on our inlanlry stationed some distance
from the beach. One of the frigates, the Min
nesota, at a distance of two utiles, also threw
shot and shell at the infantry.
Our informant assures us that seven Dalil-
gren guns from one of frigates fired many shots
on the hospital containing our wounded, hitting
the building several times, notwithstanding the
yellow flag was flying. The Surgeons were
compelled by this barbaious act to have our
wounded moved further into the interior.
The Minnesota is reported to have been on
fire three limes from hot shot thrown from the
batteries.
Coi. Spaulding’s regiment lost all its bag
gage, blankets, <.tc., nut saved all their arms.
We have no positive information from Bay
Point battery, farther than it was silenced at 11
o’clock. Wcliear that it suffered serious loss.
It is reported that the garrison retired in safety
toward Beaufort.
Of Col. DeSaussufe’s regiment, stationed at
Fort Walker, four were killed at the batteries
and twenty wounded.
We understand that the Confederates lost no
prisoners, except, perhaps, one or two from
Col. DeSaussure’s regiment.
The killed were covered with blankets and
left. The wounded were also placed on board
of steamers, and will arrive in Savannah to-
day-
The enemy’s ships, which have, passed our
batteries, can be distinctly seen from Beaufort.
Forts Walker and Beauregard are still firing.—
The enemy lias lost one gunboat, which was
burned. Shells can be seen from here bursting
in the woods. Our lines of.communication are
completely cut off, unless more troops are sent
here, with artillery and cavalry. Four ships
are now in sight, over the land and up as far
os Skull Creek.
How xo Damn tux Rebels.—The Indian
polis sentinel says:
The Rev. J. W. T. McMullen is making
heavy—v»ry heavy—war speeches just now.—
Down in Henry County he spoke the Other day,
and an intelligent and respectable gentleman in
forms us that, among other things, iie called
upon God Almighty to damn the rebels, and,
said he, blasphemously, as we think, although
we are but a publican and a sinner, “if He can
not damn them enough and quickly, let him
call upon me and the regiment I am about rais
ing.”
Reported Recapture of Fort Hatteras.—
A private despatch, received in this city yes
terday, brings the gratifying news of the re
capture of Fort Hatteras, S'. C., by the South
ern forces. We know that an expedition has
been in preparation for some time to retake that
post, and we hope that the report of its success
may prove to be true.
The above is clipped from the Charleston Mer
cury of the 8tb, but from the fact, of our receiv
ing no confirmation of the report bv telegraph
we presume it to be untrue.
Bpedti Despatch to the Nashville Patriot.
Richmond, Nov. 3rd, 1861.—A private let
ter from London to the Washington Republi
can says that unless the next few days brings
over the news of a brilliant and decisive victo
ry of the Federal Government over the Con
federates, the Government of Great Britain
will at once take steps to raise the blockade of
the Southern ports. Lord John Russel says—
“I will consider the propriety of sending out
ships of war to raise the blockade.”
A More Liberal Policy.—We hear a report
which we believe to be reliable, that the Banks
have adopted a more liberal policy towards
planters—that they will now advance 7 cents
per pound on cotton, and make no charge for
the advance, requiring only interest. This, if
true—and we do not doubt it—will be a great
measure of relief to the country. The plant
ers, we presume, will generally accept these
liberal terms.—Col. Enquirer.
Highly Important. —Tho Nashville Patriot,
of the 7th inst, says that one of the heaviest
divisions of our army at Bowling Green, under
command of General Hardee, was put under
marching orders the day before; and was in
motion by ten o’clock A. XI., on the morning
of the 7th inst
Gen. Hardee’s force consists oi Regiments
from Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tenn
essee. The Patriot thought it not prudent to
say more than that the movement was not a
backward one, and that if it be executed ac
cording to programme, it will be as gratifying
to the South as it will be startling and over
whelming to the Hessians with whom it will
contend, in its results.
BRIDGES BURNED.
Yestei day the mail train on the State Road
did'not arrive; and we were informed that two
bridges on the Chickamauga River were burn
ed night before last. This is, no doubt, the
work of abolitionists, and we may look out for
our Railroads to be torn up and bridges burned,
and fire set to our houses and cities all over the
South, for some time to come. ‘ Barns and out
houses in the country will be set on fire, and
wicked negroes tampered with. Look out.
We learn that the trains will run regularly,
and no delay to mails or passengers will occur.
Trestle work will soon be erected, and in a short
time the trains will run over the stream as be
fore.—Atlanta Confederacy, lOfA.
CHEAP BLANKETS.
Newspaper blankets are coining into vogue.
They arc no joke. A correspondent of one-of
our exchanges thus refers to the matter: “I
have recently heard much about the value of
newspapers as a substitute for blankets, and
have considered the statement to be apocry-
plinl. But, lust evening, 1 was induced to make
tho experiment. I took four full sized news
papers and pasted them together at the edges,
making one lur-'e sheet the size of a blanket.—
I then removed the blankets from my bed, and
placed .the newspaper street between the one
remaining blanket, and the counterpane. -The
result was a comfortable night's sleep, without
any feeling of cold. I pledge ray word to you,
gentlemen, that this is literally true ; and my
object in making tbe communication is, that
through the medium of your paper, the fact
may be generally circulated; for it is no tri
fling matter to the poor to knrw that for an
outlay of a few pennies they can supply them
selves with a comfortable bed covering through
the winter. One of the printers connected with
the Advocate office has also made a It ial of the
matter, and says it works like a charm.”—Ale-
Political papers, doubtless make the tear meet
blankets.
THE BATTLE OF LEESBURG.
The falsity of the Federal official statement
of 1,736 as the strength of Baker’s force in tho
battle of the 21st ult, is fully exposed by the
Baltimore South, which proves conclusively
that it could not -have been less than 4,000
men. The same paper reports the loss in the
California regiment alone at 237, showing that
tho efforts of the Administration to diminish
the total loss to 637, are intended to delude the
people. It is further stated most positively
says tho Richmond Dispatch, that McClellan
authorized the crossing of the river, and that it
was a part of liis general plan; but that its “ill
success isattributed to the failure of General
McCall to'co-iopcrate, tie . ;h he may ha”e been
threatened by a flank .movement from Fairfax,
which compelled him to retreat.’’ McClellan,
it is said, w ill not abandon. Ins pet project of
capturing Leesburg, and rushing from there
into the Valley of Virginia, and will sehd large
forces to effect his object. .Meantime, however,
he finds himself mcuaced on his left, and is to
tally ignorant of the strength of his adversary
in front. The Baltimore paper?, of Saturday
last, published a formidable list of wounded in
the Leesburg engagement, which includes the
names of many commissioned officers.

- TUE PRISONERS OF WAR IN COLUMBIA.
Tlie people of our State Capital, in the treat-
ii-uul of the prisoners of war lately placed in
their jail, arc decidedly making a return of good
for evil. When tho captives reached Columbia,
a large numlier of them were shoeless and hat-
less,-and nearly -all were in a condit’on worse
than shabby. ..Their wretched plight excited
the pity of the citizens, who, forthwith, provi-,
ded them with the needed clothing, and render
ed them as comfortable as, under the. circum
stances, watt practicable, fa addition to this,
at 9 stated hour, every afternoon, tho people
are allowed to visit the prisoners at the fail; a
“privilege” ofwhiph tboy avail themselves pret
ty freely. During these visits the Yankees ob-
tain many additional consolations, in the shape
of tobacco, cigars, &e. The jail. Is guarded by
a volunteer company, a large proportion of
which is composed of youths. From this corps
two sentinels arc detailed who pace in front of
the building, while the visage of tho incarce
rated Bull Runners crowd the open windows
immediately aboVb. Whether tlunsingularly
lenient treatmjpfit of ilrcsc hireling marauders
be discreet or not on our part, it is certainly
hugely gratifying to the YnhWers themselves,
who already express a great partiality lor the
** Palmetto peoplty and declare, with great unc
tion, that they “have not been insulted since
they left Bftteijjh.”.
