THE GREAT FIRE IN CHARLESTON.
This morning dawned dreariljr upon a night
of terror and disaster. About nine o’clock last
evening the alarm rang out, calling tbs citizens
to quell the beginning of a fire, which, in the
subsequent extent and rapidity of its ruinous
sweep, will compare with the most terrible con
flagrations which have ever visited the Ameri
can continent The wild work of the flames,
and the immense destruction of property which
has thus far taken place, is chiefly attributable
to the sudden and unfortunate change in the
weather which occurred almost simultaneously
with the breaking out of the fire. The mild
and spring-like calmness of the atmosphere
during the last fortnight was broken by heavy
gusts of wind, which swept the dust and smoke
and sparks thither and hither in blinding clouds
Great flaming tits of wood were borne in dense
showers tor a distance of nearly a mile in a
southwest direction, and the whole city was
brightly lit up by the dreadful and widening
glare.
Before ten o'clock the fire had began raging
in several different points in the lower part of
the city. The buildings in the stricken neigh
borhoods were mostly of wood, old, closely
built and surrounded by small out-buildings
of an exceedingly inflammable character. As
tenement alter tenement was first licked by and
then enveloped in the fast spreading flames,
the panic became awful. The fierce and roar
ing match of the fire was a horrible scene; but
far more heart-rending was the sight of hun
dreds—we ought, perhaps, to say thousands—
of poor and bewildered families, driven sudden
ly . from thc.r homes, destitute even of thair
scanty effects All the available carts, drays,
handcarts and wheelbarrows, were immediate
ly brought int > requisition ; but these were al
together inadequate to remove even a tithe of
the moveables beyond the reach of the devour
ing elements.
Towards midnight the fire had assumed pro
portions of appaling magnitude. The circum
ference which it embraced was such as to ren
der the most desperate efforts of our entire fire
brigade of comparative insignificance. The reg
imen's from the Race Course came down at
double-quick to the burning Wards, and co
operated most earnestly and indefatigably in
the labors of our undaunted firemen. But still
the northeastern gale fanni the fire with its
desolating breath, and the people began almost
to despair of checking the progress of the disas
ter. From the precincts of Market, East Bay
and State-streets, the conflagration had now
reached Meeting and Queen streets. The terror
of the families (in many cases without their
usual protectors, owing to the military exigen
cies of the times) was contagious, and much
farther up into the city the work of packing up
valuables and getting ready to desert their
homesteads became general.
To g've anything like a full account of the
result, of what will hereafter be known as the
Great Fire ol 1861, in the contusion and general
consternation that prevails while we write, is
manifestly impossible. Many portions of the
burned district arc quite unapproachable, and
it is exceedingly difficult, at this time, to glean
any accurate information whatever in regard to
the enormous losses which have occurred. We
must content ourselves, therefore, with giving
our scanty notes jotted down at various hours
during the night
Tan o'clock.—The fi::e began in Russell &
Go’s sash and blind factory, at the foot of Hasell
street, and the report—though a vague one—
is, that it appeared in three places at the same
time. Crossing to tne other side of Hassell
street, it has burned Cameron & Co's immense
machine shops, and under the impulse acquired
at that point and the st- ff breeze from the north
east, without a sufficient supply ot water—for
it is dead low tide—it has become totally un
manageable, and rages without- the hope ol
being able to arrest it, except at certain strat
egic points, upon which extraordinary interests
depend.
Eleven o'clock.—The out-buildings in the
rear of Institute Hall have been set on fire by
the sparks. The attention of the firemen is di
rected thither and they are straining every
nerve to save Meeting street Tho frame build
ings on Queen street are smoking and will pres
ently blaze forth.
Twelve o'ctock.—Meeting street, from Market
to Queen, is one mass <>f flame. The Circular
Church and Institute Hall are burning. The
Mills House is thought in imminent danger,
while the fire seems stretching its red arms
around the Charleston Hotel There has been a
general desertion oi both hotels by the .guests,
under the imprsseion that they cannot be sav
ed.
One ff clock.—The track of the conflagration
begins to be clearly defined. Leaping Church
street (on which no block, excepting that next
to Market, has been burned,) the fire is steadily-
pursuing its southwesterly course towards the
corner ot Archdale and Queen streets. About
a half hour ago, a light drizzling rain began
fa ling, which may perhaps, be beneficial in
keeping damp^the tops ol wooden houses ex
posed to danger from the sparks. The people
now under-land that the fire has unchecked
sway, and furniture is being removed as far up
as Muzyrk street; *
Tico o'chck. —*At this hour tho fire is still
ragin| with violence scarcely abated. A splen
did made by the fire companics-to
save the house of I*. flty. Spratt, Esq., on East
Bay street, which wks successful; and with it
was saved the line line of buildings on Hasell
street, tile* late of whit;h depended upon that re
suit. Passing to the South westward,' the fire
has swept the entire t'ract to tho rear of the
Charleston Hotel, and loathe end of the Hayne
street ranges. J
There are no buildings noYth of Market st.,
and cast of the Hayne street stores, still stand
ing, except, perhaps, those of Henry Gerdts
and the Misses Pinckney. Crossing Market
street, the fire has extended down East Bay to
Cumberland street, and thence across to the
Mills Ho tse, taking, in its way, the Circular
Church, Institute Hah, the Charleston Theatre,
all the buildings Upon King street, from Clif
ford street up to within a few doors of Broad
street. Crossing King street, the flames arc
approaching the Year o. the Cathedral, the Uni
tarian and the English Lutheran Churches.—
Whether it will cross the area covered by those
churches, or pass the Mills House down Meet
ing street, is-still uncertain. The Fire Depart
ment is making incredible exertions. ' The
men are in the last stages of exhaustion, spt ing-
ing to each occasion with renewed vigor, and
such exhibitions of courage and endurance
have been rarely witnessed.
Th*** o'cluck. The steeple of the Circular
Church lias just toppled and fallen, with a hea
vy crash. Gen Ripley, who is moving to and
froj superintending the movements of the troops
with characteristic energy, gave orders, seve
ral hours ago, to blow up certain brndings in
the track of tlte flumes. The execution ot this
order, delayed at first, ha* at length been ac
complished. Ever and anon, curing the past
. >. hour the explosions have rent the air.
In the lower part of the city the fire has
done its work in thorough style. Its path io
now burned out, and nothing now remains tg
mark where it has passed, save smouldering
piles of cinders and gaunt and smoking walls
and chimneys. The Charleston Hotel is safe,
and Hayne street, too. The wind has swept
tho danger off, further to the south. Although
the fire rages on three sides of the Mills House,
that fine struct are has not caught. The The
atre, Lloyd’s Coach Factory opposite, the Ex
press Office, the old Executive building and all
the houses between that point and Queen street
have been burned. The fire seems making
straight towards the jail. Companies of the
Reserves have been ordered out to repress any
possible disturbance among the prisoners oon-
fined in that building. The wind has abated
somewhat
Four o'clock.—A change in-the wind has bent
the course of the fire towards Broad street-—
street. The residences of Messrs. Geo. M. Cof
fin, Jas. L. Pettisrru, and others near by, are
consumed. The flames have now crossed Broad
street, and, as the wind has not lulled, it is im
possible to say whore they will stop—short of
the river.
There does not appear to be any imminent
danger of the fire a_:ain making headway eith
er to the right or to the left of the furrow
which it has cloven through our fair city from
East Bay to King street But the htai of the
conflagration is still fearful to look upon, and is
pushing forward with giant strides as we go to
press.
Great, indeed, has bean the calamity which
has fallen upon our noble old city. But let us,
with unfailing hope and courage, bestir our
selves at once to amend the losses we have sus
mined, and to relieve, each one according to his
m ans, the great suffering which the fire must
entail upon its poor victims.
INCENDIARISM.
The Columbus Sun, of Saturday, says :
We learn from the Montgomery papers, o. c
yesterday, that seven attempts to fire the city
iccurred within two days. Two unsuccessful
attempts were made to burn Commercial Hall,
a store house on Commercial street was fired
and a stable of Mr. B. B. Davis, all of which
were fortunately discovered and arrested with
out serious damage. The fine residence of Mrs.
E. H. Dickerson, ju-t beyond the city limits,
was burned with most of the furniture and all
ol the out houses. Her loss is estimated at
$12,000, on which there was an insurance of
from $8,000 to $5,000. Thie other attempts
were made previously, commencing with the
burning of Col. J. B. Powell’s Livery Stable.
The Savannah Republican, of yesterday^
publishes the following.statement:
Still at it.—Charleston was fired in several
places Saturday and again yesterday. Several
wooden buildings, of but small value, were
destroyed. - |

McLkan’s Cordial.—As may be aeon, we ttnser
this week the advertisement of McLean’sCordial.Ao.
It is very well known wo aro not particularly fa
vorable to patent medicin-a, and, as a general thing,
eschew the whole of them with but little ceremony,
ami with these sentiments we declined inserting fhia
advertisement until we ktew what were the ingre

we have learned, aud believing as we do, that them*
gredients are good, and the compound judiciously
made, wc recommend it as a mixture worthy of pub

The above is from the St. Louis Christian Advo
