Te enemy
'w on the right wing, no
t>> to surprise and draw ail
lie artillery ; hut their tire
"nnded to by the31st Virgin
^’^Jkonsequenco of their being
in th8-x^%i held to a galling lire from
r >r numbers who had taken shelter be-
in; timber, it was thought advisable to
ke companies of the 12th Georgia Regi-
|o their support, who* promptly obeyed
*umand. They tired into and then charg :
flrovc -them farther in the woods, but :
erwards ordered to fallback and draw
!»ut where the artillery could play upon I
IPin, but a few well aimed shots from the ar- i
lllcry, » >th a sharp musketry, soon drove
'them hack again, and finally repulsed them en
tirely, leaving many dead o'n the ground, and
the timber literally riddled with the marks of
musketry.
Some thirty minutes after the engagement
ok place on the right, the much lamented
Anderson, and company, with Captain
Broun, and company, ol the 12th Georgia, and
others, whose position it was to occupy and
hold the left, weiu at their post, anil the light
of day had just began to make its approach,
flier. Capt. Andei -ou discovered a company ol
fcbn some distance in front on the road in
Kpicli our piekeis were placed. 1 hey called to
jtir boys, “Don’t shoot; we are your pickets
coming in I’’ Captain Anderson being on his
home a few paces in front of his men, told this
conapany if they were our pickets to fall inlo
tin diu h and let the Yankees come; at which
■^romand they replied, "Yes, sir," and dis-
chafgt 1 a Aoliey at him, several bulls takingef-
t*ct on him. He fell from bis horse and died
Tery soon. At the instant of the enemy 's tire
the boys discovered their mistake, and the word
fire was immediately heard in our ranks, and
a deadly tire instantly poured into their midst,
cutting dow n their flag hearer and others, the
first round. The enemy immediately took
shelter in. the fallen timber, the large logs,
stumps and brush affording them a splendid
hiding place, but the Southern boys being no
less ready for the engagement, fell into the
ditch, which brought the front within thirty
pacts of each other, when a sharp musketry
was set up, and Capt. Brown with his valiant
hand occupied a position immediately in Iront
of the enemy, where they l< ught with almost
unparalleled energy, as if each oian was deter
mined it possible to do tin re execution than
his neighbor in the ditch, while the Captain
was no less prompt at ins post; but as no reg
uianty could he kept up in loading and firing,
each man having to select his object to shoot at,
the battle whs fought almost ai.er the Indian
method—tlie officers using the r muskets aim
doing good execution when an opportunity ol
fered. But soon the enemy, finding their po>i
lion rather w arm, began to get a little farther
off, hut was distinctly heard to say' they have
been telling us lies, saying there was no can
non and but lew men ; but just look at them.
But tiny were hi such close quarters, and our
boys just betwixt the enemy and artillery, that
the fight was principally with muskets.
Alter about seven and a half hours of hard
fighting, the Yankees were compelled to give
up the field, though intheomet of the battle
they would throw rooks in the ditch, curse our
boys and t< l| them to hoi up their head, they
had some Yankee notions ter them. But they
soon exhausted the r sport, leaving K7 dead bo
dies on the field, 5 seriously wounded, which
they could not i-airy off during tie; battle, and
5 prisoners ; and the most reliable information
that we can gain from their camps foots up 7'Ml
killed anil wounded, and 3,70 have deserted
since the battle, while our total loss wa-,180—
22 fell dead on the field, 80 wounded, tiie oth
ers missing. Capt. Brow n had one man shot in
tlnvlace, wound serious; no others hurt, hut
several of his men as well as himself carried
the marks of a number of halls in their caps,
clothes and hair; and we can only wonder
why more of otir hoys did not fall during such
a warm engagement, but We must acknowledge
the hand ot Divine Justice on the buttle field
as well as elsewhere, and ask the Giver of all
Good to recogn*j ami bless us a nation ot
people. Kkd.
Tns Geokcia Donatiox. - The donation of
One Hundred Thousand Dollars, munificently
made by the Legislature of Georgia, for the
reliei of the sufferers by the late disastrous
Conflagration in this city', is, bv ttie action of
our State Legislature, to be received and dis
bursed by his Excel I ""'v the Governor. The
general contributions ror the same purpose art
under the control of the City Council ol Charles
ton, who have entrusted the distribution of the
fund to a Committee of trustworthy citizens
\Ye arc clearly of opinion that all toe contri
butions for the relict of the sufferers, being for
the same benevolent object, should form a com
mon fund, and be distributed by the same
agents. Two sets of distributors would lead to
gre:;t confusion, and the common disbursement
could not be in b tter hands than those of the
Committee of citizens appointed by the City
Council, who have the means of ascertaining
the comparative necessities of the sufferers,
and are most likely to do impartial justice in
the premises. We "would, therefore, respect
fully suggest to Gov. Pickens the propriety of
placing the noble donation ot the Empire State
of the South at the disposal ol' our Mayor and
Aldermen.—C/m*. Courier. *
