Have the proud become vassals—the free become slaver,
Aud meekly inured to outrage ?
Has free thought aud free speech succumb' to the sway
Of a madman besotted by rage?
Are the hills and the valleye still grassy and green,
And the Hay still laving the snore-
la the scream or the seabird still heard o’er its wave,
But the echo of Freedom no more ?
Does thechesuut still stand where, in childhood’s bright
hour,
I culled from its bur the brown nnt—
And the old beechen tree raise Its branches on high
While Freedom in dungeons are shot r
Do the birds sing as gay and as blilbe as of yore,
And the streams gurgle on to the sea—
W’bile the Despot is lorgnur new chains for the land
Where ail but the Patriot is free ?
And shall my loved State ne’ver break Irom those chains
To chant the free song or the brave ?
And can my old Sire, who for freedom hath fought.
Now die in that land as a slave?
No! he- burthen of wrongs has moved the old man.
And though he is feeble and o!d.
He would strike with the brave, to wrest his loved land,
From the grasp of the Tyrant’s hold.
For the Warrior’s spirit still gloss in his breast.
Though his life is ebbing away.
And a Patriot’s blood ever flows in his veins.
While he weeps that his locks are gray.
But the -on- of the brave will yet rise m their might.
Their birth-right of Freedom regain.
And mv own native State, now chained to the dust.
Will mount to glory again.

The steamer St. Johns leaves to-night for
Fort Pulaski with another cargo of provisions.
Why this provision has not been done before
there was any danger, and the river clear of
enemies, is a question easier asked than answer

aud before that event, things will have taken a
different change from the present state of af
fairs.
Yesterday our large dry dock was towed
down the river, and as soon as the Federal#
>aw hot, they weighed anchor and put off.—
They have not since returned. They must
hate thought that Com. Tatnall had the ele
phant after them. "I he dry dock has been
sunk in a channel whicti obstructs it, and will
prevent the Federal fleet from advancing.
The steamer Leesburg has just returned.—
She landed all her provisions at the Fort, in
safety. The Federate saw her go down, but
made no attempt to stop her. \V hile she lay
at the south wharf ot the Fort, the Feds fired
a few shots at her, but they all fell short some
thing over a mile. She will take in another
cargo to-night, and go down to-inorrow.

FROM MISSOURI.
Two or three days ago a report was quite
current here that Gen. Price had recently at
tacked and whipped the Lincolnites stationed
at Lexington, Mo. Several passengers on the
Western train report the rumor as in circula
tion ir- Nashville, but we were still disposed to
doubt it as no mention was made of it in our
Western exchanges. Northern papers, though,
seem to cnntinn the report, and it is now quite
evident that a severe battle took place h tween
Geo. Price and the Federate, near Lexington,
•>n the l!)th. The Yankees attempted a sur
prise anti were defeated according to their own
estimate, with a loss of 800 killed and taken
saws were engaged in the fight on the Union prisoners. Our information states their loss as
amounting to some 900, and Price’s loss as 20
killed and 88 wounded. The forces engaged
are said to have numbered about 17,000 Fede
rate and 11,000 Confederates. The difficulty
of comm unication with Missouri from the South
may account for our not having received this
account by its legitimate source, the telegraph.

we have learned, and believing as we do, that the inr

made, we recommend it as a mixture worthy of pub
