LETERS FROM RICHMOND.
[COKUSPONDEKCE NF THE MKKCCRY,]
Richmond, Saturday, Jan. 17.
What Yarikte Paper* Say—-North Carolina—
Vigilance of our; Authorities—Dimming
Foreign Consuls—-Saulsbury and Wilkinun
—Lincoln's Last—Freezing Wealhv, etc.
etc.
Late Northern papers, received this morn
ing, have many encouraging items in them.—
The election of Richardson to the United States
Senate, the action of the New Jersey tagisla-
turo in regard to an armistice, and the riso in
gold, all toll favorable in our behalf. The Bal
timore American gets black in the fane over
Mr. Davis’ last speech, and quotes upon him
his address at Fancuil Hall some years ago.—
The World prints Mr. Lawley’s letter to the
London Times,' dated Culpepper, November
14th, in which the writer predicts Burnside’s
movement upon Fredericksburg and its result,
S raises the cheerful courage of our ragged sol
icit, and closed by a very high compliment
to General Lengstreet.
The Hilton Head correspondent of the Her
ald gives an elaborate account of the defenses
at Charleston, and seems to think that the tak
ing of that city will be no easy job.
In the lettter of Mr. Lawlev, just refciTei
the Northern approach to Richmond is pro
nounced impracticable, and the writer con
cludes that the next attempt will be by the
way of Suffolk or Eastern North Carolina.—
The calling out of the Virginia militia by Gov.
Letcher is intended to aid the repulse of Fos
ter’s expedition, which has not yet attained
the magnitude of another “On to Richmond,”
in accordance with Mr. Lawley’s opinion, but
is quite formidable enough to damage seriously
our lines of communication, but not to hold
them, as the enemy fondly, imagines. Our au
thorities arc awako to the danger. Gen. Lee
was here yesterday, and when the timo comes
the proper assistance will be at hand. It is
not thought that Burnside’s army has been
materially depicted by reinforcements to Fos
ter,
The recall of our representatives abroad imd the
dismissal of foreign Consuls accredited to the Uni
ted States, will be made the subject of earnest dis
cission in tbo Confederate Senate at an early day.
From all I can gather, there is but oie opinion
here ns to the propriety of such a step.
The angry colloquy in the Yankee Senate be
tween Saulsbury and Wilkinson, in which the lie
direct was freely given by the former, is a sign al
most n9 promising as the fisticuff between E.aileck
and Stanton. When we get the rascals to fighting
each other with something that will draw blood,
the end of things will not be far off. Indeed, the
aspect of affairs at the North is enough almost to
explain the profamc remark lately made by Lin
coln, vix: that the Almighty had turned secession
ist. A lady just from Washington says that the
Gorilla really said this.
We go from Central Africa to Nova Zembla in
a*day. Twenty-four hours ago it was too warm
lor fires, and this morning we can hardly get
wood enough—coal cannot be had—to keep from
freezing.
It seems, from a statement in this morning’s pa
hat tne Murfreesboro’ prisoners are to be
...ti -at oil' as usual, Lincoln bating prob-

Of' Husbands, etc., etc.
Reported, on good authority, that cx-Govei >
nor Pratt, of Maryland, has written to tbo
President that peace with thoNorth is no long
er a question of months but of days. Also,
that news has been received here that the Em
peror will not only recognize, but inter ,'eno in
February. Consequently, the Presit’ mt, Gen.
Lee and everybody else are very chccrfu' I
am pretty sure that these are something moro
than moro “Sunday stories.”
Appekrances indicate another attempt upon
our lines at Fredericksburg. It is thought the
enemy is erecting mortar batteries to shell i&
out of our works. As yet no orders recalling
officers absent on leave ha ve been issued and
hence it is inferred that General Lee takes
these demonstrations of the enemy as a feint
The Examiner again urges tho Government
to make forrgn nations pay off our war debt
by a tax levied on cotton. Beast Butler units
the Yankee Government to do the same tld’ig-
The party that owns the Cotton mav object to
Butler’s scheme. A cartel, it is raid, nas par sed
between the editor of tbo Examiner and M-.
Douglas, of the' Virginia Legislature, who
made a fierce assault upon his paper in the
House of Delegates a day or two ago. I hear
tho matter has been adjust id, or rather post
poned.
It is admitted by the Hilton Head corres
pondent of the New York Times that the cot
ton crop in that Utopia has not paid expenses
and as for the “First Regiment South Caroli
na Volunteers," they are a worse and more ex-
.ptnsivo failure than the cotton crop..
Nothing was said in'the Message about the
Attorney General’s Report, for the reason per
haps that it was not received until the Mr •
sago was completed. It contains, I learn, two
recommendations, viz, the organization of the
Supreme Court and tho Court of Claims.
The New York Caucasian cries out loudly
for peace. We shall hear more of the same
tunes by tho time the Sixteen hundred millions
of dollars called for by Spaulding have been
thrown into the market. Gold 48 at last acs
counts.
Husbands must be getting scarce. A young
lady advertises in the Enquirer for an ‘intelli
gent gentleman, with a view to matrimony.—
A soldier preferred.’ She gives ner namo in
full. Arc we turning Yankees ?
Gen. David R. Jones will be buried to-day.
Bis death bis been expected for several months
past, -.
Mr. Capcrton, the nowly ■ iccted Senator
from Virginia, is a man of more tlum ordin:
ry abilities, a cautious and sagacious politi
cian. Weather still very cold and clear.

MISSISSIPPI
The Vicksburg Whig says that the aboli
tionists who came dowu to take Vicksburg,
having signally failed to effect anything, turn
ed tbeir attention, on thoir retreat, to marau
ding, pillaging|and committing outrages of the
gravest nature. At Mr. Joe Willis’ placo, at
Eagle Bend, they burnod the gin house, quar
ters and all tho buildings on tho place, killed
and took off all tho stock, and murdered the
only negro left on tbo place. At Mr. Kigcr’s
place (Buena Vista) they found only a Ger
man woman with two servants. She succeed
ed in preventing tlu-m from burning tho houso
but they took the ear rings from her cars, the
finger rings from her fingers, and almost the
clothing Iron) her back, not -leaving her
change of anything. At Mrs. Bell’s place, on
the Louisiana shorn, opposite the Tennessee
landing, they robbed all the white xcsidents
of the place, and most of tho negroes of eve
rything they possessed, not even leaving them
a chicken on the place, or anything movable
in the house. Other outrages committed by
them arc so sickening that wc retrain from re
citing them. During their stay they -ondcav-
ored to entice all tho negroes to go with them,
but only three went from tho place. The
troops that committed these outrages were
from the transport Champion, Capt. Mallory.
At the plantation of Matt Johnson they pil
laged and destroyed everything. Two of their
boats stopped at his placo all day, and it is
said were engaged in taking on cotton which
belonged to our Government, that they learned
was stored at Johnson’s mill, only six miles
from the river. There is scarcely an inhabited
plantation along the river that has not suffered
as severely as those we have alluded to above.
The Jackson “Appeal” says that the pro
gress of tho enemy in North Mississippi seems
not only to have been checked, but we have
reason to believe that ho has lallcn back to
most of the positions he originally held on the
line of the Charleston -railroad. Witu the ex
ception, perhaps, of his advance to Holly
Springs -which he reoccupied after its capture
by Van Dorn—this is undoubtedly the casc.On
the line of the Mississippi and Tennesseo rail
road he has no troops this side of Memphis,
and our people are entirely free from bis press
ence and outrages.
The Yankee cavalry ascended the western
shore of the Mississippi a few days ago to
within nine miles of Port Hudson, committing
their usual depredations.
THE REPORTED YANKEE VICTORY ON
THB ARKANSAS RIVER—FURTHER PARTICULARS.
A correspondent of the New York Horald,
writing (rom tire Yankee Mississippi Flee*, at
the “Mouth of White River, January 9,” says:
After leaving ihe mouth of tho Yazoo, t! e
licet, under the command of Gen. McClernand,
slowly ami leisurely at rained up ''ie river t<i
this point, making, jpeated stoppages, and be
ing just one week in making two h'-'dred sad
ten miles. At Milliken’s Bend, wl- o snch
largo supply of dry wood w- obta > ed in go
ng down, we again st ipp J and took in anoth
er larga supply. It excited ne surprise that
it Lad not been burned during ou-absence,
but on landing the eye • of the capt <ns of the
boats were gladdened by Bering Ion® extended
ranks ly : .g just as we find left them two weeks
before. The reason of the frequent stopj ges
was no doubt to give officers t opportunity
to report to Gen. Modern: id; With no more
import at tacii’ -nla tire Hi ot arrived at Mont
gomery Point where it now lies, prep 'ring .or
two minor expeditions, one up Wh > River
and the othar up tho Arkansas. What is ex
pected to-be accomplished is more than I can
divine, possibly something, it it does i >t wash
away a portion of the stigma of our defeat at
Vicksburg, may serve at least to divert public
attention from too close a scrutiny into its
causes.
It is rumored that the expedi ion up the
Arkansas is to capture “Arkansas Post,” a
square fort with bastions, mounting four 32-
>ound smooth bore guns, and one 100-pound
Carrot gun, and manned by about five thou-
aand troops. It is situated on the first bluffs
about seventy miles above the mouth, follow
ing the windings of the river. The lowness
ol the water in White river may prevent the
transports going very high up. It <8 stated
that the banks are lined with masked batteries,
and that on the level ground where the cut off
makes into the Arkansas, there is a ramp of
15,0i0 rebel troops.
This is not believed, however, as there ap
pears no adequate motive for the rebels keep
ing such a large force at that point It is
probable that the whole ol the fleet will come
together in the Arkansas just above the cut
off.
The following comprises the only intelli
gence in regard to tho alleged surrender of
Arkansas Post, except that which we have al
ready published :
The surrender occurred on Sunday, with all
the anus, store and ammunition. Our loss
was reported 200. Rebel loss 560 in killed
and wounded, and from 5,000 to 7,000 prison
ers taken.
Fighting commenced at Arkansas Post on
the evening of the 10th. On the 11th inst,
the garrison of seven thousand surrendered
unconditionally. Our loss is reported to be
two hundred, mostly by shells from our own
gunboats. The lort mounted nine guns. An
immense amount ol munitions of war fell into
our hands. * The rebels were cut off from res
treat on both sides of the river. No further
particulars.

BARGAIN AND SALE.
Tho Now York House of Assembly has been at
l* dead lock, since its meeting, on tlie Gth inst. To
tbe latest date, no election of Sjieaker has been
made. The vote bad been a tie for two weeks*—
Tbe Democrats were in the majority, bat Borne of
tlicir men had been tampered with, and no elec
tion had been made. On the 15th, at a Republi
can caucus, tho Republican candidate resigned,
another was nominated in his stead, wbo in turn
was induced to resign, and to nominate a fishy
Democrat, by name Cullicot- The Herald’s cor
respondent furnishes the following particulars of
the terms, on which the Republicans agree to vote'
for Cullicot, and which that writer says are quite as
good oa those made by tbe Democrats, in electing
a Republican clerk:
“Callicot’s bargain is he shall retain all his in
dividuality as a democrat, and shall appoint all
the officers of the House not elected from the
tlr , iatic ranks, shall give the republicans a ma
jority of men on One-half of the standing coinmit-
Mcsand the democrats a majority on tbe otherhslf.
Tue only vote that he pledges to cast on their side
is on tne question of going into a joint ballot for
Unued States Senator. This is to Eecnrc a republi
can U. S. Senator. He pledges to vote against
postponing the election and for taking u ballot
this winter."
On the next morning, the 16tb, when this .nomi
nation by tbe Republicans was sprung on the
Democrats, they being wholly unprepared for it.
resorted to every sort of expedient to preve nt a
vote. They succeeded in wasting the day by mo
tions and speeches, and it was finally agreed that
the matter should be postponed until next day at
12, when a ballot should bo taken without debate,
The Herald’s writer thinks it highly- probable the
Republicans will elect their candidate, and thereby
secure the election ofaBUA Republican Senator.
This bargain affords an illustration of the sort of
integrity which the Yankees have introduced into
politics. Tbe transaction is spoken of ns an ordi
