Lawrence, agent of the FrCedmen's Bureau at Fayetteville, North Carolina, writes to a friand in "Washington City a strong letter opposing the continuance of his bureau, against which he arrays a list of powerful objections. His lettor closes thu9: “I felt ashamed of myself as an American, and for my Government, when, a lew days ago, Judge Buxton, of the Supreme Court of, this State, called at my office to inquire as to the extent of the jurisdiction he would bo permitted to exercise in a term he was about to Iraki.” Major Lawrence is plainly a friend to free government. Here is another hard hit. He says: “If a State should establish such a judicial system, I think the Federal Government might well be called upon to enforce it* guar anty of republican government to the people of that State.” No language could better describle the in compatibility of such a bureau with our form cf government.—Jirehanye. By the by, one of tbe regiments I most frequently encounter ed was from about Boston—tlie 2d Massachu setts, Co). Lowell. I once met a detachment of it under command of a Major Forbes of Boston; and, although our encounter result ed in his overthrow, he bore' himself with conspicuous gallantry, and I saw him wound one of my best men with his sabre. I also had on adventure with a Captain Barton, of Massachusetts, who served on General Eus tace’s staff, and interested myself to procure his exchange. * * * In the event of your visiting Virginia I shall be most happy to extend to you any facility in my power for seeing places of interest, Ac. The Beauty op Old People.—Men and women make their own beauty or their own ugliness. Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton speaks in one of his novels of a man “who was uglier than lie had any business to be,” and, if he could but read it, every human being carries bis life in his face, and’is good looking or tho reverse as that life has been good or evil.— On our features the fine chisel of thought and emotion are eternally ct work. Beauty is not the monopoly of blooming young men and of white nnd pink maids. There is a slow growing beauty which only comes to perfec tion in old age. Grace belongs to no period of life and goodness improves the longer it exists. I have seen sweeter smiles on a lip of 70 than I ever saw on a lip of seventeen. There is the beauty of youth, and there is also the beauty of holiness—a beauty much more seldom met; and more frequently*found in the arm-choir by the fire, with grand children around its knee, than in the hall room or the promenade. Husband and wife who have fought the world side by side; made common stock of joy and sorrow, and aged together, arc not unfre- quently found curious alike in personal ap pearance and in pitch and tone of voice—just as twin pebbles on the beach exposed to the same tidal influences, are each other’s alter ego. He has gained a feminine something which brings his manhood into full relief— She has gained a masculine something which acts as a foil to her womanhood. Mr. Seward on the Fenian*.—A "Wash ington letter of tho 14th, in the New York Times, says: Sir Frederick Bruce had an interview again to-day with Secretary Seward in regard to Fenian affairs. Mr. ’Sewnrd assured him that it was nothing more than a seven days’ wonder; and would die out in a short time if left -alone. The British Minister thought there ought to bo some expression on- the part of the government against it; and if it was officially announced that the govern ment reprobated the movement, it would have a most excellent effect just now. It is very probable that something of the kind will shortly bo issued by the Secretary of State. The British Minister no doubt, recollects another prophecy of Mr. Seward that the Southern “Rebellion” would run its race in “sixty days.” * Arrival of a Carso of Staves op, the Caban Coast.
