GENERAL NEWS.
New York, May 31.—Two deaths from cholera
occurred here yesterday, one on Cherry street,
the other on Sixth Avenue.
Eight thousand pounds of ammunition have
been seized by the U. 8. Marshal on board the
steamer Gen. Sedgwick, from Galveston, con
signed to tho Adjutant General of the Fenian
Brotherhood. It is supposed to havo been stolen
from tho Federal camp in Texas.
The steamer Costa F.icca, from Panama, brings
upwards of three hundred thousand dollars in
gold. < Ex-United States Minister Nelson, from
Chili, is a passenger.
Tho Spanish squadron left Callao in disgrace
and soiled, it is ^reported, to Montevideo. Ad
miral Nunes addressed a bombastic noto to the
British Consul that having chastised the Peruvi
ans, ho now leaves the Pacific, and will be ready
to return if Peru ahould become insolent. Gua
temala, Salvador and Costa Rica have declined
the Chilian-Peru alliance.
Cincinnati, 31—The mile raco, run yesterday,
by Underwood’s lour year old colt, Revolver, full
weight, was the fastest ever run; time, 1:141, in
the second heat.
Baltimore, 31.—The Somersett, of the direct
line from Liverpool, arrived 13J days out She
has a large cargo and two hundred passengers.
Nbw York, 31.—Tho Atlanta sailed to-day
with fifty-five thousand dollars in specie. Tho
shipments of gold Saturday will probably ex
cec-d thmo million.

THIRD SECTION PASSED THE SENATE
Washington, May 30.--In the Senate, Mr. Wil
son from tho Committee of tho two Houses, re
ported a joint resolution of respect and veneration
fur the memory Gen. Scott, and that when the two
Houses adjourned to-day, they adjourned to meet
ou Monday ; that a committee of seven Senators
and nluo Representatives be appointed to represent
Congress at tho funeral to-morrow. Tho resolu
tion was unanimously adopted. Similar resolu
tions adopted by the House.
The Third Section of the Reconstruction resolu
tion was passed as originally reported from the
8enatc caucus. Several amendments were propos
ed by Mr. Doolittle, but each one was rejected by
a vote of 33 to 10, which was the vote en the adop
tion of the section. Tho matter was laid over un
til next week.
In the House, Mi. Stevens introduced a bill for
the construction cf a line of railways from Wash
ington to north-west, and also a bill for a railroad
from Hillsbnrg to Cleveland, which was passed.
Mr. Le Blonde, of Ohio, spoke against the hill, as
an infringement against State Rights.
Further reports from G«ns. Stecdmsn and Ful-
lnrton on man’s Bureau had been received
and reierred to Congress.
A bill for reduction of ofilcers’ pay, and to reg
ulate that of soldiers, was 'discussed, after which
the House adjourned.
THE FENIAN'MOVEMENT.
ANOTHER RAID AGAINST CANADA
THREATENED.
New York, May 31,—Tho Sweeney wing of tho
Fenian army appears to have taken the field.
The Fenians, by train loads, have been arriving
at Buffalo, Cleveland, and other cities along the
border fronting Canada, and the movement has
assumed a threatening attitude.
Tho British Consular Agent at Buffalo tele
graphed yesterday to tho manager of the Great
Western Railway requesting him stop all trains
going from the Suspension Bridge. Ho also tele
graphed to the military authorities at Toronto.
Tho Canada volunteers, it is expected, will again
he called to arms.
Fire in New Orlenns.
New Orleans, May 31.—Morrison’s Drug Store,
on Magazine street, was burned to-day. Loss, f 80,-
000.

Wasoinotun, May 31.—It is said that the re
port of tho Secretary of tho Treasury will show
the total sales of specie during tho month of May
to be near thirty millions, at a premium of 30j
percent., and that no gold was sold in March
and April for less than 27 per cent premium.
Among the persons recently pardoned is W. S.
Simpson, member of the Confederate Congress
from South Carolina.
Amougtho confirmations by tho Senate are the
following: Jos. Wilson, of Indiana, Minister to
Vcnezuola; Win. Saxon, commander in the navy;
Capt. G. V. Fox, Assistant Secretary of the navy;
James Ready, of New Orleans, Assessor of Inter
nal Revenue.
It is not true, or published, that the President
docs not specially object to the Reconstruction
rciolutlon now pending in the Senate. He odvlsea
adherence to his own programme of reconstruc
tion.

The Secretary of IV or sent to the House to-day,
in compliance with its resolution, General Whit
tlesey's review of Generals Stecdinnn and Foliar-
ton’s report on tho Frecdmen’s Bureau. General
Whittlesey says their report is unfair and unjust.
Ho denies that they made a thorough investiga
tion. or that they had represented the good that
the Bureau had done.
Buffalo, Juno 1, 2.20 a. m.—The Report
er of the Express has just returned from a
point a mile and a half below Lower Block of
Rocks, and says that the head of a Fenian
column, COO strong, reached that point nt 9
p. m. Wagons loaded with arms and ammu
nition preceded them. They declare they will
effect a crossing before daylight.

Buffalo, June I.—Notwithstanding tho
vigilance of the authorities in this section, the
U. S. Steamer Michigan being under steam
and having licr ports open, and tho fact of
the city swarming with Canadian spies, sev
eral Fenian regiments crossed over into Can
ada last night, including troops from Ken
tucky, Louisiana and Indiana, and one regi
ment from Ohio and from this city.
It is reported that Fort Eric, Canada, op
posite Buffalo, has been captured by the Fe
nians, who arc represented to have been 3000
strong, two thousand of whom were said to be
marching unopposed into the interior. It is
said they had cut one telegraph line.
At this point they crossed in canal boats
drawn by tugs, and when leaving the Cana
dian side, sent up wild Irish shouts, with the
green flag floating over their heads.
Col. Oneal, of the 13th regiment of Nash
ville, is in command at Fort Erie.
A large number of persons are viewing the
sight from the shore. The Fenians say no
depredations shall bo committed. All the
Canadian wires on the Canada side were cut,
excepting those near the suspension bridge.
The Agent of tho Associated Press, who
left forth? scene of operations of the Fenians,
reported that they were marching towards
tlic Suspension Bridge, twenty-five miles from
here,
Boston, June 1.—Two companies of Reg
ulars left Fort Warren, this morning, under
Col. Lovingston, for the North. A Fenian
cavalry regiment, under the command of Col.
J. Cortise, late ot Mosby’a Guerrillas, is part
of the expedition from this city. The Feni
ans say that Gen. Fitz Hugh Lee will com
mand the cavalry wing of their army of in
vasion. They further say that a bio c? will be
struck early next week, probably on Mon-
day. f
STILL LATER.
Toronto, June 1, 4.30, r. m.—There is
great excitement over a rumored invasion of
the Fenians. Volunteers arc lmrryiDg to
the supposed scene ot action. It is reported
that the enemy had evacuated Fort Erie, and
pre now marching on Chippewa. Tho fron
tier is not invaded at any other point than
that named. An engagement on the Niagara
frontierisexpected to-morrow.
Buffalo, June 1.- The number of Feni
ans who effected a landing in Canada from
tlii3 point is estimated at 3,000, with acces-
cessions hourly. They are well armed a::d
have six pieces of artillery. It is stated that
there will be a general descent on the whole
frontier, and that the Fenians havo altogether
thirteen batteries of artillery. The leaders
have telegraphed from this point to various
cities to bring on reinforcements. The men
who went front here, generally, had served
in the Federal or Confederate armies. No
fighting has occurred, or is anticipated for
two days. The obstruction of the Welland
Canal and cutting the Grand Trunk Railway
and moving in two divisionson Montreal and
Kingston, is said to be the programme.
Colonel O’Neal, who leads the troops from
here is styled “ Commander of the Army of
the Irish Republic in Canada.”
Gen. Sweeney, it is reported, has crossed
over with the main body, bat this is denied.

REDISCOVERY OF JESUIT SILVER MINES.
New York, June 1.—The steamer Morning
Star has arrived from Rio Janeiro, May 4th.
The frigate Susquehannah left Rio, April
19tli, for New York. The news from tho
river Platte was highly important On tho
10th of April there was a slaughter of twelve
hundred Paraguayans who attacked the Bra
zilian batteries on tlic island opposite Sta-
pura.
Ten thousand Brazilians crossed the Scrona,
on tlic lOtli, without opposition, drove in the
Paraguayan skirmishers, and next morning
occupied Itopagna. They captured four guns
and a flag.
The whole Paraguayan army was trans
ferred, on the 10th, to the Paraguayan side of
Panama.
The Paraguayans had abandoned their
camp, three miles on the road to Hcrmaulia,
and retreated to that fortress, on which the
Allies were marching. Hermaulia cannot be
held, and a speedy end of the war is antici
pated.
The Brazilian Imperial Assembly has con
vened. Tho Emperor's speech called special
attention to the subject ot the currency.
The custom-house in Santa Cathorina has
been blown up, and twenty persons killed by
the explosion.
The Rio Grantlc Du Sul old Silver mines,
worked by Jesuits, have been rediscovered.

New York, June 2.—The intelligence from
the Fenians is conflicting. Some reports are
that they are at Fort Eric, and were dispers
ing : others that the Niagara river was filled
last night with small boats, carrying rein
forcements.
A Buffalo despatch says that 1,500 British
regulars have arrived at Suspension Bridge,
and were aiming to capture the Fenians, who
vacated their encampment.
The TJ. S. gunboat, Michigan, is patroling
the river, with orders to sink anything at
tempting to cross.
Gen. Sweeney was here yesterday, but has
probably left for the scene of action.
Gov. Fenton wi.ll issue a proclamation to
day, warning citizens not to encourage the
invaders. Twelve regiments of militia will
be sent to the border.
Twelve hundred Fenians have left here for
Canada.
Toronto, June 2.—Between 10 and 12 this
morning, a force of volunteers attacked the
Fenian camp near Ridgeway, and fighting
became’general. Tho number killed and the
result not yet known.
Later.
Buffalo, 11:30 a. m., June 2.—The En
glish troops occupy Fort Erie.
It is not known whether the reported fight
at Ridgeway Is with the Fenians who landed
yesterday at Fort Erie, or another party—
probably the former.
It is reported that the English troops are
retreating from Ridgeway, bnt no particulars
are given.
New York, June 2.—At the Fenian
Headquarters, the sale of Bonds of the Irish
Republic closed for want of patronage.
A company of Fenians lelt the city for tlic
scene of war, and others are preparing to
follow.

Probable Adjournment of Congress—
Radical Plans.—It is said a caucus of the
Radical Senators was held last Thursday, at
which it was determined to adjourn about
the middle of July, unless some unforeseen
reason for sitting longer should arise in the
meantime. The constitutional amendments
were discussed, and it was decided that every
attempt should bo made to harmonize the
views of Senators, and that being done, they
should bo passed by a strict party vote.

Washington, Juno 1.—The public busi
ness is suspended, to-day, in respect to tho
memory of the late Gen. Scott Congress is
not in session, both branches having ad
journed till Tuesday next.
New York, June L—A largo number of
prominent merchants and business men of
New York have extended an invitation to
President Johnson to visit New York some
time in June, at his convenience. It is un
derstood that no political signification at
taches to tho invitation, the New York gen
tlemen being merely desirous of tendering
the President a public reception and intro
ducing to him tlic people of that city.
The cholera at quarantine is said to be of a
very malignant type, and is principally con
fined to tlic German pas-engers. Eighty-four
cases have been admitted on board the hos
pital drip Falcon, out of which number four
teen have died, leaving seventy patients at -
i revenue j

HEAD CENTRE STEPHENS PROTESTS
AGAINST THE 3IOYEMENT.
Toronto, May 2.—The Bristol version of
the fight at Ridgeway is that the attack was
made by the British, who drove the Fenians,
and a number were killed on each side. The
volunteers were expected to hold their own
for reinforcements to reach them, which were
momentarily expected.
American neutrality is severely censured,
and people declare that the Government is in
collusion with the Fenians.
New York, June 2.—The general impres
sion is that the present movement is facint to
cover the real point of attack, which will be
on the St Lawrence River. Canadian troops
arc stationed along the line to prevent Fe
nians from crossing The suspension bridge
is carefully guarded and scrutiny is made of
all travellers. Movements of men toward
the frontier are reported from every part of
the countiy.
The town of SL Albans, Vermont, is the
rendezvous for reinforcements. Tho Third
Fenian Infantry, twelve hundred strong, and
Fenian Cavalry regiment, Jefl Boston for
that point yesterday, Smaller detachments
from Syracuse, Elmira, Troy, Rochester,
Lowell, Rutland, and other places were con
tinually arriving.
One of Mosby’s guerrillas has command of
the cavalry regiment from Boston, and the
Fenians say that Fitz Hugh Lee is to coin-
mar i the cavalry wing of the army.
Four hundred and fifty thousand rounds of
ammunition was shipped from Columbus,
Ohio, in the last few days, for New York;
one hundred and fifty thousand for Chicago,
and thirty thousand muskets for Buffalo.
These arc believed to be for the use of the
Fenians.
Stephens has issued a manisfesto at Phila
delphia protesting against the movements of
Sweeney on tho ground that it is not desira
ble to commit any breach of neutrality by
which this country might bo compromised.
Buffalo, June 2.—Gen. Grant passed-
Wcst at noon. Ho sent the following tele
gram to Gen. Meade:
Buffalo, June 2.—To Muj. Gen. Meade,

Gen. Barry is here; assign him to tho gen
eral command from Buffalo, to the mouth of
the Niacria river.
The State authorities should call out the
militia on the frontier to prevent hostile ex
cursions lrom leaving the United States and
save privato property from destruction by
mobs.
