Postmaster General Randall, conferred dur-

Any prominent Postmasters, Collectors,
-rshalls, Revenue Officers, etc., all Prosi-
.:i.il appointments, were made during the
~c period, and many more are being
cuget| for the coming week. The Presi-
liave been brought into public notice, and
have, to some extent, been put into market.
They arc still cheap in view of their great
fertility, and the healfiifulness of the climate
by which they arc surrouuded.
In addition to theso important features, it
must he remembered that stock, grass and
grain lands are claiming much more atten
tion from the public than formerly, arrising
from the uncertainty attending the culture of
cotton with negro labor. Here our lands
can be tended successfully with w hite labor,
and but a small force is requisite, since the
larger portion of them are down in grass.
Stock raising is the most profitable part of
our farming, and will yield a handsome re
turn in the increase of the stock. After your
lands are once down in clover and gross, they
continue to enhance in valpe, and in this re
spect arc very unlike the cotton lands that
continually deteriorate. A man is never re
quired to move in this county, because of nu
impoverished soil. On the contrary, by the
grazing of stock and the periodical turning
over of the sod, tlio farmer enjoys the satis
faction of seeing his acres acquire an addi
tional fertility. In the mniters of pure uir,
fine water and health, I can honestly assert
my belief, that this country is unsurpassed by
any other in America. I would be willing to
make a wager that the bills of mortality are
smaller in tiiis county than in any other in
the Stute. I would advise all doctors to steer
clear of Dade as the rock upon which all
their hopes will be wrecked.
As I intimated in the outset, the topogra
phy of this mountain-locked country is but
ittle understood, and, therefore, I will at
tempt to furnish the readers of the Telegraph
some idea of it. Coming out from Chatta
nooga, on the Nashville and Chattanooga
Itailroad, about four miles, you pass around
the “Point” of Lookout Mountain, and im
mediately enter Lookout Valley. This Val
ley is made by the Lookout and Sand Moun
tains. The latter is sometimes known os
Raccoon Mountain. The Lookout Valley ex
tends through the entire length of Dado
Oiunty, and twelve miles into Dekalb County,
Alabama. Here commences Wills Valley
proper. The two valleys divide at the head
waters »f Wills and Lookout creeks. Wills
creek running southwest, and emptying into
the Coosa river, and Lookout running a north
easterly course, and emptying into the Ten
nessee river. Lookout Valley is about thirty-
five miles long, and Wills about sixty. Both
valleys are indiscriminately designated as
Wills Valley, by those abroad, on acount of
the Wills Valley Railroad. The latter was
bartered as such by both the Alabama and
Georgia Legislatures. Both of the valleys
average about three miles wide, and are com
prised of hill and vale. The level land, and
the undulating alternate throughout tlic val
leys. Now and then you meet with a series
if knobs surrounding a level tract of land.
The rolling land is strong, and when once set
in gross does not wash. You frequently meet
ith long slopes that afford beautiful
and picturesque sites on tlieir summits tor
building. At the side or foot of the slope
are often found clear, cold springs that re
fresh a man to look at them, and suggest tlic
usefulness of ice. It is but rarely that you
see a well in these valleys. Springs arc al
most entirely relied upon for water. It will
renay a person to ninke a journey up here du-
thc summer months just to drink our
served reproach, having faith unassailable in
the people and in the principles of free Gov
ernment we recognise a Chief Magistrate

responsible duties our profound respect, and

There being no other business before the
meeting it was, on motion, adjourned.

Shocking Accident at Richmond.—On
Wednesday, Mrs. Harlow, wife of Mr. John
P. Harlow, wheat receiver at Ilaxall & Cren
shaw’s mills, Richmond, visited the mills in
company with two lady friends. While turn-
neg to leave the upper story her dress was
taught in the conveyor wheels which carry
ibe flour to the superfine bolting apparatus,
and she was diawn into the machinery. Mr.
Taylor, who was standing by. caught her and
would have rescued her, but her steel hoop-
skirt had become entangled in the cog-wheels
and Mr. Taylor's attempts were vain, and he
became near being drawn himself into the
machinery, which in a moment mangled the
unfortunate lady in a manner too horrible to
contemplate.

places. They would have a decided advan

climate, sc- nery, and the ordinary drinking

are abundant and inexhaustible, and can be
