lated to create a rior. His language wns as
follows: ‘‘After Judge Underwood- leaves,

plonse.. I need not advise you wliat to do,
tor great bodies do as they have a mind to.”
He was arrested on a warrant from the Mayor,
and wav bailed in the sum of three thousand
dollars to appear to morrow. The citizens
lmvc been apprehensive of a riot all day.

Rjchmond, May 18.-— The State Court
was packed this morning. A military guard
was stutioned around it, and strong police
force inside. About twenty ladies were
among the spectators, also fifty negroes. At
11 o’clock 3fr. Davis was brought In, and
took a seat next to the prisoner box, with
General Barton and the Marshal. A senrant
accompanied him. Mr. Davis, sitting by iu>
open window, remarked, “it is a little cold,
isn’t it?” and he was then removed to a seat
near his counsel in front of the Judge. Get).
Burton's return , to the writ was real}, and
the Judge complimented Burton in olieying
the laws and released him of the custody ol
Davis. Tho Marshal.immediately served on
him a bench warrant to answer to tho Nor
folk indictment. Mr. O’Conor spoke of 31 r.
DaVis* long imprisonment and feeble health,
and'asked that lie be bailed. There .lining
no opposition upon the part of the nroseett-.
tion, the bail was fixed at one hundred thou
sand dollars. The Judge announced liis
readiness to accept the bail, stating at the
same time that the responsibility ot the de
lay to bring 3Ir. Davis’ case into qOurt rested
upon the Government, not upon the District
Attorney. He also said, half the bail slinnld
be given by persons residing in tlie Statg of
Virginia. The sureties then came forward,
Horace Greeley being among tlie first, follow
ed by Schell, of New York : Jackman, of
Philadelphia, ami others. A'number of gen
tlemcn residing in Virginia offered their
names ns bail.
Mr. Davis was congratulated by several
friends, but there was no demonstration or
noise of any kind. After giving hail to ap
pear at the November Term ot tho Court, lie

to-day by those having Jefferson Davis in
their immediate charge, that lie should be
conveyed to the coart room us privately as

Burton, Dr. Cooper and Mijor McElrath. and
in the other ha.ck were Cnpt, Willard, (who
was a Ur.ion officer during tbo war and is

Spottswood House), Dr. McGill and the Rev.
Dr. Minnegcrodc. On the return to the
Spottswood Hotel. Rev. Dr. Minne-gerode in
the company of Mr. Davis and hia fatniiy,
and a few pcrsoiinl fricnds, offered np prayer
;in thankfulness for the release ot his friend,
bis restoration to the bosom of his- frieuds
atid family, and for his future protection. A
large number of visitor* were, afterwards

As Mr. Davie came out ot the Court House
and entered the carriage alter bis release^
there was a loud cliccr from’ the crowd of
negroes outside, and about fifty of them
gathered around tho coach and shook hands
with him. He has remained quietly in his
hotel all the evening. lie will visit Canada'
in a day or so to see his children.
The first names signed to tlio bail bond uitor
that of Jefferson Davis are, Horace Greeley,
then Schell, of New York, and JAckman,' ol
Philadelphia. A little lower down is the
nnme of John Minor Botts. The Virginia rea
douts who signed were prominent citizens of
Richmond, merchants and lawyers. There
seems to be a general feeling of relief muting
the citizens anil authorities that Davis is at
last at liberty.

■Washington, May 13.—Replying to the
Committee of Knights Templars’ invitation
to tho President to the Boston Masonic Cele
bration, Mr. Johnson said he had thus far de
clined to accept any invitations with which
he had been honored, because of the incom
pleteness of tho work under th<J reconstruc
tion acts. These, ho said, had barely been
initiated, anil until the Attorney General’s

submitted and considered, and some general
rufes in accordance with this opinion shall
imve been adopted for the guidance of mili-

that no Recovery can be had oh notes given
in the purchase of slaves, and the case of
Brcwes ts. Shackleford, ia which the Court
holds, as previously, that no recovery.can, be
had on notes based on Confederate money—
in other words, that such money was illegal,
and of no consideration ; and further, that
notes signed before the passage of the stamp
law don’t require to be stamped to housed

that a company of United States troops has
been defeated by the Indians, and forty kill
ed in Arizona, and a train of 70 mules loaded
with goods were captured.
Brooklyn, N. Y., May 14.— Archer’s store
house, at the foot of Kendrick street, was
struck by lightning and burnt to-day, in
cluding three hundred thousand dollars
worth of saltpetre and nitrate of soda. The
fealtpetre exploded, setting fire to a schooner
adjacent to the building. Two lwys jumped :
overboard, one of whom was'drowned.

Shipwreck.
Boston, May 14.—The bark Almira Combs
has arrived, bringing th*» crew of the ship
Continent, Capt. Maxey, 1 bound from New
Orleans for Havre. Thy Continent sprung a
leak in a heavy galo on the 8th ; the water
continued to gain on the pumps, which wfcrc
kept constantly going. The main and mizzen
mast were cut away without affording relief.
The sea broke over tlie ship ripping upftier
deck anil sloving ih her bulwarks. Captain
Combs hove in sight on the 9th, but owing
to a severe gale the crew transferred on the
10th, losing everything, only saving tbej(i :
selves by clinging to the fore rigging. The
cargo consisted of2000 bales of cotton, 82,000
pounds stores and $8000 in specie. The
ship was a complete wreck when abandoned.

His messenger to Juarez returned tivday,
having made the trip from Matamoras to San

Liberals. He reports that Escobedo had
thirty-five thousand men at Quaretaro, aud
was in-possession of all the roads but one,
with the expectation of getting that. Max
imilian was inside with fifteen thousand
men. The feeling among the Liberals was
