Executive Department. 1
Atlanta. Ga.. July 5,1669. J
To the Sheriff, hie Lawful Deputy or the Jailor
of North County :
Whereas, At the April adjourned Term of the Su
perior Court, held in and for the county of Worth, A.
D.. 1869, George Fowler was tried for, and convicted
of, the crime of murder, nnd was then and there,
therefore, sentenced by the Judge presiding at said
Court, to be executed by hanging by the neck until
dead, on the 9th day of J uly. A. D., 1S69: and
Whereas. An examination of the evidence adduced
upon said trial discloses the fact that the conviction
was founded solely upon the testimony of one witness,
whose statements are confused and in many respects
contradictory and improbable, and that tho said wit
ness was not nearer than seventy-five yards to the
parties at the time of the alleged killing; and
Whereas. It farther appears, that the evidence ad
duced upon said trial as aforesaid was not of a charac
ter to demot strate the fact, that the condemned had
any premeditated intention to take the life of the de
ceased, but rather that the homicide was tho result of
a sudden impulse of passion on the part of the con
demned, while engaged in conversation with tho de
ceased, and that, therefore, had the verdict of the
jury been strictly in accordace with the evidence
elicited before them, the conviction would have been
for manslaughter only; and
Whereas, It farther appears from said testimony
that the deceased had, on several occasions, an
nounced a firm determination to take the life of the
condemned on sight; and
Whereas, It is alleged by responsible parties that
the Sheriff of the said county of Worth interfered in
Such a manner as to excite the feelings of the people
against the condemned before and daring the trial,
and influenced the selection of jurors to the prejudice
of the condemned; and
Whereas, Respectable and responsible citizens, well
informed as to all the facts and evidence in the ease,
certify, on oath and thatthey donot bolievo, that had
the condemned been a whito man, he wonld have
been condemned nnd sentenced to be hung under
similar circumstances and upon the same evidence.
Now, therefore. In consideration of the facts and
circumstances aforesaid, and to the end thatimpartial
justice may bedone.I, Rufus B.BuIlock, Governor and
Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of this
State and of the Militia thereof, by virtue of the pow
er and authority in me vested by the Constitution
and laws cf this State, do hereby commute the said
sentence of capital punishment so passed upon the
said George Fowler as aforesaid, to imprisonment in
the Penitentiary of this State for and during the term
of one year from the 9th day of July. A. D.. 1S69; then
and thereafter, namely, on the 9th day of July, A. D.,
1870, to be discharged, and restored to bis civil rights
as a citizen of this State: and
It is hereby ordered, That the Principal Keeper of
said Penitentiary forthwith cause the said George
Fowler to be conveyed to, and confined in, said Peni
tentiary, in pursuance of and in compliance with, the
commuted sentence aforesaid.
Given under my hand and the Seal of the Execu
tive Department, at the Capitol in Atlanta, the
day and year first above written.

THE SYMPTOMS OF LIVER
Complaint are uneasiness and
pain in the side. Sometimes the
pain is in the shoulder, and is
mistaken tor rneumatism. The stomach is affected
with loss of appetite and sickness, bowels in general
costive, sometimes alternative with lax. The head
is troubled with pain, and dull, heavy sensation, con
siderable loss of memory: accompanied with painful
sensation of having left undone something which
ought to have been done. Often complaining ofweak-
* ness, debility and low spirits.—
Sometimes some of the above
symptoms attend the disease, and
at other times few of them: but
tno River is generally the organ most involved. Cure

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
FOB PURIFYING THE BLOOD.
The reputation this ex>
ccllent medicine enjoys,
is derived from its cures,
many of which are of.®
truly marvellous char
acter. Inveterate cases
of ScrolUla, where the
system seemed utterly
given up to corruption,
have yielded to this com
pound of anti-strumous
virtues. Disorders of a
scrofulous type, and af
fections which are merely
aggravated by the presence of scrofulous matter,
'have been radically cured in such numerous in-
. stances, in every settlement in the country, that the
public do not need to be informed here that it is in
most cases a specific and absolute remedy.
Scrofulous poison is one of tho most destructive
enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt,
tenant of tho organism undermines the constitution,
and invites the attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it seems to breed infection throughout the body, and
then, on some favorable. occasion, rapidly develop
into one or other of its hideous forms, cither on the
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber
cles may be suddenly deposited in the lungs or
heart, of tumors formed in the liver. These fheta
make the occasional nse of the Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable.
It is a mistake to suppose that so long as no erup
tions or humors appear, there must be no scrofulous
taint. These forms of derangement may never
occut\ and yet the vital forces of the body be so re
duced by its subtle agency, as materially to impair
the health and shorten the duration of fife. It is a
common error t also, that scrofula is strictly heredi
tary. It docs, indeed, descend from parent to child,
but is also engendered in persons bom of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air. licentious
habits, uncleanliness, and the depressing vices gen-
erally, produce it. weakly constitutions, where not
fortified by the most constant and judicious care,
are peculiarly liable to it. Yet the robust, also,
whose turbid blood swells the veins with anappar-.
cntly exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity from
it, nor feci insensible to the importance of an effec
tual remedy.
In St. Anthony’s Fire, Bose or Erysipelas,
for letter, Salt Bheum, Scald Bead, Bing-
ucorm, Sore Ears and Eyes, and other eruptive
or visible forms of the diseases caused primarily by
the scrofulous infection, the Sarsaparilla is so ef
ficient as to be indispensable. And in the more
concealed forms, as in Dyspepsia,Dropsy, Heart
Disease, Fits, Epilepsy, Neuralgia, and other
affections of tho muscular wad nervous systems, the
Sarsaparilla, through its purifying power, re
moves the cause of the disorder and produces aston
ishing cures.
The sarsaparilla root of the tropics does not by
itself achieve these results. It ia aided by the ex
tracts combined with it, of still greater power. So
potent is this union of healing virtues, Syphilis or
Venereal and Mercurial Diseases ara cured by
it, though a long time is required for subdning these
obstinate maladies by any medicine. Deueorrhoea
or. Whites, Uterine Ulcerations, and Female
Diseases in general, are commonly soon relieved
and ultimately cured by the invigorating and pnri-
lying effect of our Sarsaparilla. Bhenmattsm
and Gout, often dependenton the accumulations of
extraneous matters in the blood, have their remedy
also in this medicine. For Direr Complaints,
torpidity, inflammation, abcess, etc., caused by
rankling poisons in the blood, we unhesitatingly
recommend the Sarsaparilla.
This medicine restores health and vigor where no
specific disease can be distinguished. Its restora
tive power is soon felt by those who are Danmid,
listless, Despondent, Sleepless, and filled with
General Debility, have written us of the youth
ful vigor imparted to their nervous system, which
seemed buoyant with that prolific life they thought
had departed on the advance of age. Others, whose
fountains of fife were always sterile, acknowledge
their obligations to it for an obvious change.
Ayer’s Ague Cure,
for fever and Ague. Intermittent fe
ver, CM11 fever, Remittent fever,
Dumb Ague, Periodical or Billons
fever, Ac., and indeed all the affec
tions which arise front malarious,
marsh, or miasmatic poisons.
As its name implies, it does Cure, and does not
fail. Containing neither Arsenic, Quinine, Bismuth,
Zinc, nor any other mineral orpoisouous substance
whatever, it in nowise injures any patient. The
number and importance of its cures in the ague dis
tricts, are literally beyond account, and we believe
without a parallel in the history of medicine. Our
pride is gratified by the acknowledgments we re
ceive of the radical cures effected in obstinatocases,
and where other remedies had wholly failed.
Unaccfimated persons, either resident in, or
travelling through miasmatic localities, will be pro
tected bv taking the AGUE CUBE daily.
For liver Complaints, arising from torpidity
of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stimulating
the Liver into healthy activity.

and Analytical Chemists, Lowell, Moss., and sold
