RI0R to the year 1847, Superphosphate had been made J iu Lnglaud, by treatiug Ourut lioue* with sulphuric acoi, and by the formation ot «ulphuie of Ume, thus afe «tmcting ous atom ol lime from tne bones, a soluble phos phate nad been formed. In Itvil. J. J. Mapep auuie a se ries ot experiments, thus: he found, analytically, that Pe ruvian Guano contained the necessary elements fol insur ing the growth ot plant*, but not iu the right relative pro portions to each other. lit-instituted a series ol experi ments, practically, by which h« proved that one hundred pounds ot burnt bouen. treated with tilty-six pouuds ol sul phuric acid, thirty-six pouml* of Peruvian Guano, ana twenty pouml* ol suiplutie ol ammouia, loruieu a on .tiue every way superior to Peruvian Guauo, and that it Would uotexcits the soil, but would continually add to its fer- Hs had fowad that ous bwr«t Uc*«i. trash from the uuowi, mixed with a cord of organic matter, would, bv fermentation, produce a manure equal to a cord of well- rutu-d stable manure. He further found that neventten barrel* ol blood, when dried, would make one barrel, auu that blood coaid he procured at comparatively little . vst, in certain sections; that it could be dried by cooking iiid pressing, so as to produce a dry powder, and by adding to ths above named ingredients, and squaJ weight ot dried bullock’s blood a manure is formed ’me hundred pounds.\ of which are equal in power and lastiug effect to one. oun- \dred and eiyhty-Jlve pounds of the best Peruvian Guano. Since be lias offered his invention to »b“ uruiers ot the country, some filly companies have imitated (hi* article uuder variuu* names, aud for the purpose ut rendering it popular, have traduced Prof. Mape* and hi* article, claiming to make that ol a sujierior quality. Every year present* uew imitators of thm article, who mauutacture an inferior article, using the miuerai phosphates a* a tutoi*. instead of the calcined bones of animals. Notwithstanding all this, ths demand for Map**’ Niirogeuized ^superphosphate of Lime has doubled. Peruviau Guano contains an excessive amount of Ammo nia, the only us* of which Is to render water capable of dis- •olviug a larger amount of the inorganic constitute* ol the soil, «»r as sometimes called to act a* an excitant. The mar ket gardeners of New Utrecht commenced some year* ago by using two bundled weight of guano to the acre; they are now compelled to u*e tweJve hundred weight to produce the same effect, aud their laud is evidently impoverished by its use, while those who have used the Nitrogeuized Super- phosphat* of Lime, bare steadily found their soils to Ik improved, aud instead of requiring more, they require les* fertilizing material each year. And this is particularly true of Cuttou aud Tobacco lauds. Among the advantage* arising from the use of Nitrogen- ized Superphosphate are the following: It carries uo weed seed to the soil; it prevent* nut, aud insures the perfecting of plants; thus, when used on cotton, the ImiIIh do not fall, and, as by the experience of Mr. Loiuas. Col. DHris, Col. Goodwiu, and others, it gives a greater weight pel acre ot cotton. For wheat, it ha* steadily proved iUelf to be supe rior to Peruviau Guano; wheu iu coutact with seed, it doe* not destroy it as does the Peruviau Guano; and it supplies the deficiency ol phosphate of lime and other ingre<beuta produced by excessive reaping of grain and undue pastu- *fhe reports on the form of the inventor, of the American Institute and committees of other institutions who have visited it, although it i* manured entirely with this fertilizer, prove that no manure has yet been used which prodacesan equal amount of profit.
