“Jeanne d’Arc” Members
Make Rush for Her As She
Leaves the Boat
(By Associated Press. 1
NKW YORK. Oct. 29.-Fifty "Jeanne
d'Arc" suffragists sprinkled great yellow
chrysanthemums along the path of Mme
Sara Bernhardt as she walked down the
gang plank from the French l.ner La
Provence today.
The minute she stepped upon the pier
there was a great rush and the French
actress was soon being hugged, kissed
and welcomed to America, as “One of
cur own dear sisters.” Captain Poncelez.
of the steamer, had ordered his crew to
line up and they set up a hearty cheer.
The suffragettes had cabled Mme
Bernoardt that she had been elected a
member of their order and they had
decked the pier with streamers of yellow
ribbon and little yellow flags.
Mme Bernhardt said there was no
truth in the story that she carried her
coffin about with her.
Sunday she passed her C7th birthday
aboerdship.
TREATMENT OF IMMIGRANT
IS SHAME OF CHICAGO
CHICAGO, Oct. 29. A vigorous attack
an conditions In Chicago that have re
sulted In maltreatment of Immigrants and
a severe arraignment of the police were
features of an address made last night
by Prof Grafaam Taylor, of this city, be
fore members of the Congressional 'Broth
erhood of Chicago. I
According to Professor Taylor, the
“pulling and hauling of Immigrants by
axpression at the Dearborn street sta
tion is one of Chicago's shames.”
"Women.” he said, ’are easy prey for
agents of disorderly places and statistics
that have been compiled.” he declared.
■>how that in some distances only one
balf of the women immigrants who leave
Ellis Island. N. Y., for Chicago, reach
their destinations in this city."
In Illustrating his point he asserted that
"white slave” employes board the trains
many miles from the city and by their
devices lure the unsuspecting women into
their clutches.

Telegrams poured In around the call, from

was steady at an advance of 4 to 5 points over
Saturday's last quotations on the more active

The market was very steady throughout the
