This was larger by nearly 100,000 bales than many trad ers hnd figured on and it brought out heavy selling for both acncquts on the first call. Ac ilie lowest the tradlug months were 22 to 25 points down. The market acted as if it held a large short interest and the realizing of profits by holders of short contracts proved to be a strong supporting factor. HAYWARD & CLARK COTTON LETTER NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 9.—Although New' York shows suspense of support and an easier tone, Liverpool was little affected and ruled firm over our holiday with spot sales totalling 14,<)00 bales, and 12,000 bales respectively. The market, however, eased today on the census re port, closing 7 points lower on the day. The census gives 12,919,257 ginned to January I, which compares with 14,317,002 last year, II. 084,515 in 1910 and with 12.465.298 in 1908. Ginnings for the period are 495,000 this year, against 547,000 last year and 389,000 in 1910. Th© large ginnings in Georgia were particularly surprising and the state shows 1,767,016 ginned to January 1, against the government estimate of 1,701,000 total for the state. Our market opened about c* .joints lower to conform to New York, but there was an eager demand for contracts from the start and prices rapidly recovered 12 points. The important professional news yesterday was the heavy sell ing by brokers in New York usually acting for bull interests The into sight for the week looks around 336.000, against 401,000 last year. Prospects are in favor of bullish comparisons of mill takings for the week, as last year’s takings were only 397,000. Spots are still neg lected and about % lower to sell, but there is no increase in offerings, which shows that con fidence among holders has not decreased. INE breeding is the secret to success with fancy poultry and it has been proven with horses, cattle and hogs that it is the otilv safe and sure way to ob tain the best. \ ou can get results with poultry quicker by far and get to the top so much sooner by carefully line breeding your birds, and the day is coming when chick ens will he pedigreed the same as animals. I had by far rather breed from a cull or off specimen that had the proper blood lines behind it than to breed from the very best specimen that could be had that I knew nothing of its breeding. The most careful and most successful breeders today in the United States can tell you with a certainty the history for genera tions back of every noted bird they have. When more attention is paid to the mating of your birds and a careful record kept of the offspring produced from them you will know better how to mate rT ~~ r~" every year so as to produce a • larger per cent of firstclass speci mens than you have been doing in former years. Poultry keeping is a science and is becoming more and more so every year and the careful breeders who are studying scientific breeding, care and keeping of poultry are the ones who are reaping the greatest resuits from their efforts. Year by year we are learning more and more how to handle the poultry industry of this country, and is it has become such an important asset, especially to the farmer, it is now receiving the at tention it should have had In former years. If you have not already made up your matincs do not delay it longer, as the hatching season is on us and the time to produce the most profit able specimens is early in the season. In parti-colored birds it is far more important to line breed and dou ble mate than it is in solid colored specimens. When several colors are blended to bring about standard requirements the best specimens can only be produced by double mating. For instance, in Barred Plymouth Rocks, the light males and the light females must he mated together, the dark males and the dark females together if a large per cent of exhibition specimens of either color are produced. If this careful mating is neg lected for two or three years and light and dark birds allowed to run to gether, in three generations they will breed back to dominickers and lose the nice, clean, clear barring that is so hard to get, and which is required In the winning specimens nowadays. Ilf , Brown Leghorns arid in Partridge and Silver Wyandottes and in Partridge and Silver Plymouth Rocks the same system of mating has to he practiced if a person secures the best results, and only through this system of mating can the best specimens be produced. In any line of chicken or animals from 62 1-2 to 87 1-2 per cent of one certain line of blood or the original blood should be kept intact if you expect to produce a large per cent of firstclass specimens. In obtain ing this large per cent of certain blood one has to he familiar with the pedigree and line breeding so as to know just how f^r to go without in jury to the health or vigor of the specimens used to breed from. Breed ing is a science and has to be studied carefully, and if a careful study of a bird and most animals is made you will find that the most noted prize-winning specimens nearly all contain at least 75 per cent of prize winning ancestors back of them. It is becoming more and more so with poultry every year and when these conditions are more thoroughly under stood more high class specimens will be produced from a given number produced than has heretofore been secured. It is discouraging to a breeder to hatch a- large lot of chickens and at the end of the season find that none of them are- as good as their parents, and only by careful mating and careful breeding can these good specimens be produced. QUESTIONS ASKED QUESTION. Atlanta, Ga. While you are telling others what to do for their chickens, please tell me what is the trouble with mine. I have ten as pretty hens as you ever saw, but they will not lay. Two are last year’s pullets, the others I raised the year before. I feed • them in the morning coarse scratch, in the afternoon Aunt Patsy, and how they -dtf eat. I never saw anything ike it. About a week ago I killed one. She was the fattest I- ever saw and didn’t have an egg larger than a bird^gg, so I thought perhaps they were too fat to lay, so I cut down tlieir feed. What do you think of it? I only feed them twice a day. They always act like they are starved to death. Please tell me through The Atlanta Journal what to do. A SUBSCRIBER. ANSWER. As a rule chiekens should be very fat to lay eggs, especially in large quantities, but they should bQ„ made to take exercise by scratching in litter for their feed so as to convert the surplus fat into egg- AND ANSWERED. producing materials. It would be a good idea to add one-half white clipped oats to t'ne scratch feed that is fed in the morning. The Aunt Patsy should be kept constantly be fore them in a self-feeding hopper. They can then satisfy their appe tites and will not eat near so much and it will do them lots more good than if fed separately once a day. It may be possible that a part of your hens have ceased to be profitable as layefSy As a rule the second or third year of a hen’s life they do not lay many eggs and especially if they have been great layers during the first year. Every one keeping chickens should at least raise enough pullets every year to replace one-half of the hens with pullets. Hens to produce eggs must have sufficient food to satisfy their appetites or they will not hav e anything in their system to produce eggs cut of. If your chickens are not getting green food you should supply it to them at least once a day, and they should have plenty oyster shell, grit and water where they can get it at will.
