(By Associated Press.)
NEW YORK, Jan. 20.—Cotton opened easy
at a decline of 13 to 17 points and sold 21 to
-3 points not lower right after the rail, with
all positions making new low records for the
movement, under renewed lupwTasion and boar
pressure. Weak Liverpool cables, reports that
the south was offering spots more freely in
tile English market, and southern selling here
supposed to be against snplles in the interior,
seemed to account for the confined aggressive
ness bf bearish sentiment. Leading trade in
terests were buyers on the decline with the
result that covering became more notlv after
the break blow 11% cents for May and prices
rallied 10 or 12 points from the lowest before
the end of the first hour.
Heavy southern selling was encountered on
the first hour rally and the market soon de
veloped renewed weakness with prices selling
off to a net loss of 23*$28 points on the old
crop “posltons. with May touching 11.69, or
Sfl.r*?; per bale under the high records of last
month.
Short profit taking and trade support cheeked
the decline at tills level and the market was
less active at noon, with prices .3 or 4 points
up from the lowest.
The market was quirt during the early after
noon and prices reuled 6 or 7 points up from
the lowest on covering.

NEW ORLEANS COTTON
(Bv Associated Press.)
NE'V ORLEANS. Jan. 20.—Cotton futures
ened steady at a loes of S to 11 points on
poor cables. (Jossip on the floor of the ex
change was very bearish. Much was made of
the falling off in the spot demand and atten-
tum was f enlied to the lack of bull support.
While the market appeared to be well liquidated
uf the long interest it recently held, offerings
were plentiful, which made it appear that
e'en ontside interests were selling short.
Weather conditions over the belt were called
, 'ery favorable. Soon after the call prices
were 12 to 14 points down. Shorts took profits
and caused a reaction, the market standing at
a net lofs of 4 to 6 points at the end of
the first half hour of business.
The recovery was short lived. Th? hard spot
was what many traders with bearish tenden
cies were waiting for and they swamped the
market with offerings, with the result that
prices wore sent lower than ever. May was
put down to 11.87, a new low level for the
present downward movement. At the lowest . - -
the trading months were 18 to 20 points under , s P‘i n * s . !- *- ,c -

HAYWARD & CLARK COTTON LETTER
NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 20.—London took
a pessimistic view of the political situation,
expecting Jhat war will be resumed this week.
Optimism in respect to a speedy settlement of
the Balkan affair has been disappointed so
often that the last turn of affairs Is likely
to have a more damaging effect on trade con
ditions.
Labor unrest and apprehension over politics
is having an unfavorable effect in this country.
Liverpool experienced heavy liquidation and
hedge selling, causing a break of nearly 14
points. Spots were 14 lower. Our market
opened about 10 points lower, to meet Liver
pool, but soon recovered to 12 cents for May
and assumed a waiting attitude. The buying
was principally from satisfied shorts. ‘The
most disappointing feature is that spot demand
has not increased in proportion to the de
cline. This must either be because mills are
supplied or because apprehension as to t he
future is restricting their desire to buy.
After the dose of Liverpool our markets ban
to take all the selling and under the weight of
Offerings broke to 11.87 for May. There was
also considerable hedge selling ‘from the In
ferior.
Exporters say that some onvws are coming
110m Europe, but at a price considerably un
der the market. It is reported that factors
sold about 2,000 bales at a quarter of a cent
below Saturday’s quotations, making 12K for
middling.
DRY GOODS REVIEW
(By Asiooiatcu Pretr >
NEW YORK, Jan. 20.—Hesitation has been
noticed in the buying of cotton goods for some
little time and weakness in prices finally is
developing a pronounced way in goods that go
to inanufnctupring trades. Goods for the job
bers are being bought at tho prices quoted.
Need for goods for retailing is pronounced
and well defined in staple lines. The advance
in cotton and labor costs over a j’ear ago is
said to have made it Imperative for selling
agents to ask higher prices, so that the large
jobbers who have been here during the past
week have been content to accept the situation
and place their business for fall without much
comment.
Strikes in the cutting-up trades in New York
are disorganizing deliveries of goods made for
manufacturers and it is difficult to «ay what
the outcome will be. It is the delays in de
liveries due to requests for withholding ship
ments that account in large part for the weak
ness in many prices.
Reports from China give promise of a bet
ter export trade. Fall River sold 110.000 pieces
of print cloths last week of which 50,000 were
lor spot shipment. Wide sheetings were ad
vanced during the week to a basis of .30c for
10-4 Uticns. Prices on cotton goods are as
follows:
Print cloths, 28-inch, G4x64s, 4c; 64x60s.
3%; 38-inch 64x64s, 5V4; standard sheetings,

Eanrfly Hatched Chickens amid the
Coevemleoce of the Parcel Post
T
HE splendid open weather
that has prevailed during
, January has made most of
the 1 fowls in this section feel good
and produce a large number of
eggs. These eggs should he much
more fertile and far superior in
quality to the eggs that were given
us last year during the same time
and there Is no reason why good
hatches should not be obtained from
these, and a splendid start had
with poultry this year. Every In
dication points to a favorable year
and a great demand for eggs has
already begun. Thousands of set
tings of eggs are now being shipped
all over the country and it is well
that .lie breeders have learned to
appreciate the fact that January
and February hatched chicks are
the ones that lay early in the fail
and are the easiest of all to raise.
You should, by all means, get
every egg you possibly can set,
either under hens or in incubators
now, as chickens hatched during
next month will he nicely feathered
and ready to take a free range
when warm weather 1 opens up in March and April. Chickens hatched
either with hens or in incubators, and reared in brooders thrive and do
so much better during the cool spring months than they do at any other
time. You also avoid being bothered with insects and, to a certain ex
tent, the dreaded sorehead, by getting your chickens off and out of dan
ger before you have these troubles to contend with.
Most breeders have their pens mated and 'doing well now, and it is
a good idea for every breeder to set their early eggs at home, which will
enable them to tell how the eggs are hatching in the first place, and then
on the other hand, it will enable him to get out a good quantity of chick
ens for his own use and he in a position to 'take care of his egg orders
which usually come during March, April and May. It looks like now the
biggest demand for setting eggs that has ever existed will come to the
breeders this season.
•The parcel post has paved a new way for shipping eggs for hatching
as they can be had quickly, and it will do something even far greater
than this. It will have a tendency to reduce the sale of many cheap eggs, such
as are often sold at $1.50 to $2.00 per setting. The shipper can not pay
the postage and furnish the shipping case' and sell eggs at this price and
Xiave any profit left, and on the other hand eggs that are not worth
more than $1.50 or $2.00 per setting in single setting lots are hardly worth
the time 6f a firstclass breeder bothering with them. Tne day and time
has come when the breeders of the country want the best and much pre
fer paying $5.00, $10.00 and $20.00 per setting for eggs from the very best
rather than to set the cheap eggs that cannot produce birds that will chow
any profit to the mdn who raises them. I think in this one respect the
parcel post will play an important factor in raising the quality of the
breeding stock all over the country and to do away «?ith the sale of
cheap eggs.
One of the big things connected with the parcel post system is quick
delivery, especially in the rural districts A person who Las a hen ready
to set can wire a breeder for a setting of eggs (which only cost 25c), and
if the breeder has sufficient stock to supply his orders promptly usually
the buyer can have them the next day, and with a rest of twelve hours they
will he ready to place under the hen. The telegarph message will amount
to less than the express on the eggs would be, to say nothing of getting
them under the hen quickly. On the other hand the breeder will have to
pay the postage and save the buyer probably 15 cents or 25 cents difference
in the message and what the express would be, and get the eggs delivered
at his door within twelve-to twenty-four hours from the time the wire
is sent. 1
Many a man will order a setting of eggs immediately after his hen
takes her nest in this way that would not write for them, and wait several
days to receive them by express. In the rural districts this will be a great
advantage because during busy times on the farm often a person will
have to stop and go to the express office two or three times before re
ceiving their eggs, when by parcel post they will be delivered at his door
by a mail carrier and save him this
time, which means; money and lots of Cy? 1 r ,
it, during a busy: season - ^ ‘ *

I write to ask, a little advice re
garding poultry. I have some fine
S. C. Buff Leghorns and a couple of
the pullets have developed scaly
legs. Will you kindly suggest treat
ment?
These are handsome birds and
splendid layers. Would it be safe to
use their eggs for hatching, and
would the troubl e likely be trans
mitted?
Thanking you in advance for your
early reply, I am H. V. C.
ANSWER.
Scaly legs are not hereditary and
will not breed in the offspring of
your birds. It is caused from a
germ that gets on the leg, and this
caji be removed by using a mixture
of one pint of linseed oil and two
ounces of carbolic acid, and a small
amount of sulphur should be put in
the bottle. If their legs are thor
oughly saturated with ythis two or
three times the scales can usually
be removed aftef that by the use
of warm water and a brush. It is
i.ll right to use their eggs for hatch
ing.

WANTED HELP—Male and Female
Atlanta, Ga.
I want to ask you to kindly give
me some chicken information. I
“read you” in The Journal and know
you have the “dope.” I raise Black
Minorcas, or am trying to. I have
two fine cockerels about seven
months old, large for their age. Are
they old enough to mate with two
or three-year-old hens and get good
eggs for setting If so, how many
hens could each be mated to and be
reasonably sure of fertile eggs and
strong chickens?
Thanking you foV information
asked. I am, - E./ D. K.
ANSWER.
If the Black Minorca cockerels
referred to are well developed and
vigorous they could be mated, one
cockerel to ten to tv/elve hens, and
it is the proper way to mate them,
the young cockerels to two or
three-year-old hens. You will get
muqh stronger and better chicks by
doing this than to mate cockerels
to pullets. Usually Leghorns and
Minorcas are matured and ready for
mating at five to seven months old.
It would be better to divide your
hens into flocks of ten to fourteen
hens and mate one male bird with
them rather than to keep a large
number of hens and several male
birds together, that is unless they
have a large unlimited range. If
they are confined in yards it is not
a good idea to put more than one
male bird with a bunch of hens.
The eggs will be more fertile and
the offspring stronger when one
