BXADFIELD REGULATOR CO., Atlanta, Cm First Sessions of South Caro lina Legislature Bring No Fights of Faction (Special Dispatch to The Journal.) COLUMBIA, S. C. t Jan. 18.—The war ring Blease and anti-Blease factions in the general assembly have carefully avoided drawing: of lines on any issue and for the first week have observed a truce, the result of which has been that the legislature was organized with out any friction, and the wheels have been running smoothly. The end of the first week finds everything organized and a number of new bills introduced which will come from the committee the first of this week and be'ready for their, route through the houses. Organization was effected in record- breaking time and all the old officials webe re-elected as forecasted before the the general assembly convened. The feature of the week was the bit ter attack Governor Blease made on the course of United States Senator B. R. Tillman, former Governor John Gary Evans, Editor W. E. This message came nearer to igniting the factional hatred than anything which 10miuutee. send u» is. and premium win be «owt et once, money i ias happened so far. The house sent the mes sage to the judiciary committee along with a bill proposed by Leader Rembert, of the Blease forces, making a misde meanor for a newspaper to refuse to publish articles from persons attacked. GAUSS, 4385 Main Strfeet, Marshall, Mich. (Advt.) Glucose and Syrup, Subjects Before the' Supreme Court Friday (By Associated Press.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 17.—-The fight before federal and state pure food of ficials over the right of the Corn Prod ucts company, of 26 Broadway, New York, to label one of its products as a corn syrup, rather than “glucose,’’ was renewed today before the supreme court. The point in issue was th e constitu tionality of "the Wisconsin pure food law under which two grocers in that state were fined for selling the com pany’s “corn syrup’’ not labeled in ac cordance with the state law. The state officials claimed that as the product contained more than 76 per cent glucose it should have been labeled “glu cose flavored with refiners’ syrup.” Attorneys on behalf of the grocerS contend that the state law is in conflict with the federal pure food law and, therefore, unconstitutional. They point to the fact that by virtue of the fed eral pure food law “the three secre taries,” Secretary Wilson, of the agri cultural department; Secretary Cortel- you, of the treasury department, and Secretary Straus, of the department of commerce and labor, held tire product was not misbranded if labeled “corn syrup with cane flavor.” In reply, attorneys for the state argue that the three secretaries nad no au thority to make such a ruling and point to the fact that Dr. Wiley and th e food and drug inspection board held other wise. In the brief, Secretary Wilson is criti cized for allowing the attorneys for the Corn Products company to obtain copies of briefs bearing on the case, while de nying the state officials that privilege until Representative Nelson interceded. SECRET!!! OF INTERIOR Democratic Senators From Five States, Urge Western . Man for Place WASHINGTON, Jan. 17.—Democratic senators from five public land states of the west today joined in a letter to President-elect Woodrow Wilson, urging the appointment of secretary of the in terior of any one of five candidates recommended from the states named, each state representing one favorite son. Many reasons are given by the senators who signed the letter why, in their judgment, President Wilson should select his secretary of the interior from that locality. The candidates submitted for the-office are as follows: Arizona—Governor George W. P. Hunt. Idaho—Governor James H. Hawley. Montana—Governor E. W. Norris. Nevada—Clay Talman, of Tanapa, late Democratic nominee for congress. Oregon—Joseph Teal. The senators who signed the letter were: Smith and Ashurt, of Arizona. Myers, of Montana. Perkins, of Idaho. Newlands, of Nevada. Chamberlain, of Oregon. Governor Wilson is given his choice from any one of the five names submit ted, with the assurance that it will have the approval of all of the senators who signed the letter.
