NEW YORK, Feb. 3.—Cotton opened steady
at an advance of 1 to 4 points and sold about
7 to 10 points net' higher during the early
trading on covering, a little bull supoprt and
foreign baying. Higher cables than expected
were attributed to continental buying and
short covering in Liverpool, while foreign buy
ing here was said to be partly due to reduced
estimates of the East Indian crop. Trading
was not active and during the middle of the
morning prices were 4 to 5 points off from
the best.
Trading was very quiet later in the morning,
but there was continued relizing as well as some
scattering local pressure and prices at midday
were back to within a point or two of Satur
day's closing figures.
A few stop orders were uncovered during the
early afternoon and prices sold 3 to 4 points
net lower but later steadied on scattered cov
ering and ruled a point or two net higher
around 2 o’clock.

(By Associated Press.)
NEW ORLBANS, Feb. 3.—Cotton futures
opened steady at an advance of 2 to 3 points
on favorable cables and too much rain in the
cotton belt. Shbrts displayed a tendency to
cover. Neither side attempted much new busi
ness because of the holiday here tomorrow. The
market bad k gbod undertone and no real pres
sure was In evidence from any direction. There
was a gradual rise after the call and at the end
of the first half hour of business prices were
6 to 8 points over Saturday's close.
The market was steady at an advance of 7
to 8 points, when telegrams from New York
were received reporting a five-day schedule
among printing works in Fall River. This
caused selling for both accounts and turned
the advance into a decline, although it did not
stimulate trading to any great extent. Com-

Many Have Been Cured After Doctors
Failed.
I
At first no disease is apparently more harra-
less than dropsy; a little swelling of tne eye
lids, hands, feet, ankles or abdomen. Finally
tnere is great shortness of breatb, cough, faint
spells, sometimes nausea and vomiting, even
bursting of the limbs and a lingering and
wretched death if the dropsy is not removed.
Dr. Miles has been known as a leading spe
cialist in these diseases for 30 years. His lib
eral offer of a $3.75 Treatment free to all
sufferers, Is certainly worthy of serious con
sideration. Tou m£v not have another sued
opportunity.
The Grand Dropsy Treatment consists of foni
dropsy remedies in one, also Tonic Tablets and
Fura-Laxa for removing tne water. This treat
ment Is specially prepared for each patient and
is many times as successful as that of most
physicians. It usually relieves the first day.
and removes swelling in six days in most cases.

I T is this extra yield and also
extra in quality on the same
labor that has made the west
ern states so ruch, and by the
proper attention that they have
given to the study and improve
ment of their corn seed, cultivat
ing methods, and in fact every
thing that would go to increase
yields have many of the western
states been able to increase their
revenue thousands of dollars per
year by paying attention to the
careful breeding of corn. Our
southern farmers are being forced
to do the same thing, and the
sooner they get at it the better off
will our country he.
It is surprising to me why more
of our progressive farmers, .in the
south -do not pay more attention
to the careful breeding of cotton
for seed purposes, something that
is our staple crop. While many
men liave put lots of time and at
tention in this work and are rap
idly improving some of the older
varieties, still there is lots ot
room for improvement yet, and
the man who is willing to give cotton breeding more attention than it
has received up to the present time and perfect varieties that the adapted
and suited to different sections, he will in time to come reap a fortune,
or leave a fortune for some of his children (provided they will take up
the work and carry it on where he has left it off) to be absolutely ide-
pendent and have a fortune in their hands if this work were perfected,
the same as has been brought out in some of the exhibits of corn and
oats that can now he seen at Columbia.
Any farmer or young man could spend profitably several days study
ing the exhibits, talking with the exhibitors and getting information that
will mean many dollars to them hereafter if they put it into use by visit
ing this show. v Aside from the great educational value it is to every
visitor to see what others have done will naturally stimulate them and
make a man go back home feeling better and do something and try to
accomplish something greater than he ever has before.
I believe in years to come this exhibition brought to Columbia will
be worth thousands of dollars to this state and to the south.
This display of apples from Virginia, from Washington and fro.u
other states shows what opportunities we have in every state and what
is best suited to be grown in each state. It further demonstrates and
shows where, if the right men are interested in the work in their state
how eager and anxious they are to get out and show to the world their
staple crops to the best advantage, and to advertise their states in this
way by acutally showing what can be accomplished. The advertisement
received in this way is of more value than it can be done in any other
way.
A study of the different exhibits from each state will also ^how that
there is a big difference in' the interest that some states have in their
welfare over others. A few live men at the head of these exhibits make a
big difference in their appearance and it is astonishing to see what a
striking contrast there is among the numerous exhibits from the different
states.
I do not believe that any one who is interested in farming or in the
possibilities of their own community could possibly spend any time or
money that would pay them better than to yet visit this exhibition. It
is an oportunity that many southern people may never have again, and
the south should feel highly congratulated that they were able to secure
suclv a wonderful exhibition. The people of Columbia should be congrat
ulated on getting up this display and doing what they have for this
section of country. These annual exhibitions in different parts of the
world are growing larger and larger every year and are doing unlimited
good. It is such things as this that keep the wheels of commerce moving
and this world in such a prosperous
condition, and long may this work
be kept up.
