ry L.o .tjo. were supporting tho market in New York.
Scattered selling was in evidence, based mainly
on the continued good weather over the south,
but it was not in sufficient volume to weigh
against prices. Soon after the call the most
active months were 9 to 30 points up. Hers
profit takers among scalping longs increased
the total of offerings and prices fell off until
at the end of the first half hour of business
they were 5 points up.
After the middle of the morning the mar
ket was stagnant. Reports from Memphis that
the spot demand was improving there did not
stimulate buying. The forecast of unsettled
weather for the cotton belt prevented short
selling in volume. The political situation in
Europe was regarded as unfavorable but on
the other hand the sales of 12,000 bales on
the spot in Liverpool was taken to mean that
foreign mills were still doing a most satis
factory business. Prices sagged slowly under
tho inactivity, standing at noon 3 points over
yesterday’s final figures.

DUCK
T HERE has been much enthu-'
siasm and much interest
shown in the breeding of
ducks for the past few years. Va
rious varieties during this time
have had their admirers and some
of them have been grown very ex
tensively. Ducks, like poultry, are
bred for different purposes.
For many years the Pekin duck
has been recognized as one of the
leading ducks for meat purposes
and are bred by the thousands on
many of the large duck ranches.
They are made to produce an
abundance of meat and as a table
d«ck, especially throughout the
east, they are recognized as the
best of all for general use.
During the past t\f o, or three
years Blue Orpington and Buif
Orp, gton ducks have been im
ported into this country and are
being bred in large numbers and
many specimens of enormous size
have been shown the past season.
Both of these varieties have many
admirers. The Blue Orpington
ducks seem to be somewhat larger
as a rule than the Buff Orpington ducks. Usually with this extra size
comes the decrease in egg production to a certain extent. Those who have
tried Both of these varieties seem to speak in high terms of them, and
especially are the Buff Orpington ducks gaining fast in popularity. They
have many admirers now who are giving considerable time and attention
to this variety, and this season brought out at the Atlanta show possibly
the best lot of Buff Orpington ducks that has even been shown that were
. bred and raised in the south. They are large in size, unusually hearty
and from all reports are wonderful layers, and the Indian Runners have
in this duck a rival combination. They may not produce quite se many
eggs, but their enormous size makes up for' this difference. Nearly every
breeder that I have talked with who has had any experience with Buff
Orpingtons ducks are very much pleased with them and they are gain
ing popularity fast.
There are many other good varieties of ducks bred for table use,
such as the Colored Muscovy, which has possibly more breast than any
of the duck family. The White • Muscovies are equally as large hut do
not seem to be quite so hearty or so prolific as the Black or Colored ones.
There is one thing about the Muscovy duck little different from any
other. They usually lay and set on their own eggs and raise their
own young. For the farmer’s ducks, something to produce a
lot of meat, they are undoubtedly one of the best varieties for this
purpose as they thrive and get along with hut little attention,
are great scavengers and usually pick up most of their own living. How
ever, the little ones should he carefully fed and kept out of water and
dampness the first few weeks of their lives.
The Indian, Runner ducks, which have been on the boom for the past
few years, have come to stay'and a great many of these ducks have been
bred all over the entire country during the past few years. As layers they
seem to be the egg machine of the duck family. There are three colors of
Indian Runner ducks, the Light Fawn or Standard Colored ones, the Pen
ciled or what is known as the English variety and the pure White ones.
All three varieties are popular and have many admirers, and especially
have the White ones become popular and are now being bred in great
numbers. The White Runner duck club of America was organized in
Georgia fit Decatur and Mr. O. O. Ray who is secretary has just issued a
splendid hook containing the proceedings and history of the White Indian '
Runner duck from th e first organization of this club up to the present
time. This book also contains the Standard that they should be bred to,
the discussions and proceedings that have been conducted of each meeting
of this club and is a vaulable booklet’for any duck breeder. This club
now has members in nearly every state and it is surprising how quick and
what a large number of this variety have been brought to the front in so
short a time, showing that they eyi-
dently have splendid qualities and O? /T\iS
have won their way into popularity ” « - •—* '
by the. good work they have done.
-i Yours very truly,
(TO BE CONTINUED.)
QUESTIONS ASKED AND ANSWERED.
QUESTION.
A Sycamore, Ga.
I am a subscriber to The Semi-
Weekly Journal and read your page
in every issue with much interest.
I am coming to you for a little in
formation. I had a Rhode Island
Red hen to get in a strange fix a
few days Lack. She seemed to be
perfectly well the night before
she went to roost. I noticed that
she did not come off of the roost*the
next morning and I w r ent and found
her still in the fowl house. She was
shaking all over as if she had a
chill, and was perfectly stiff all
over. She was sneezing and gag
ing as if she was choked on some
thing. I examined her-and couldn’t
find anything wrong with her. She
died in a few hours after I found
her in that fix. ,
Will fifteen hens be enough to
three cockerels, or would you pre
fer more to the cockerel. I keep
Aunt Patsy scratch feed before
them all the time. They have good
tight roosting quarters for the win
ter and have a ten-acre field for
their range. /
An early reply to these questions
will be appreciated very much.
W. D. H. W.
ANSWER.
A chicken is like a person.. Very
often one will become suddenly ill
and die from no apparent cause.
It is possible that your hen had
croup or ruptured some blood ves
sels in her breathing tubes. In the
case of croup vaseline is the best
thing that could oe used. In qase
of an accident nothing would do any
good. Anyone keeping a lot of
chickens can naturally expect to
lose a few of them from unknown
causes. It may be possible that she
ate something that was poisonous
to her system. On the other hand a
chicken can often eat too much
in the afternoon and not drink
water enough to digest It, and die
witp indigestion. There are so many
different causes for such troubles
it would be impossible for me to
tell you just where the trouble
was with your bird,
t You should only keep one cockerel
with fifteen hens. You will get
better and more fertile eggs £rom
one than you will ffom three. In
addition to the Aunt Patsy kept
before your chickens at all times
they should have at least one grain
food once a day, a.piy of the scratch
feeds or corn, oats and wheat.
