NEW ORLEANS COTTON.
(By Associated Press.)
NEW ORLEANS. Feb. 24.—Cotton futures
opened steady at an advance of l to 3 points
on good cables. Weather conditions over the
belt were called very favorable, as no rain
was reported over Sunday and the forecast was
lor continued fair weather. This precipitated
aggressive buying for long acount. This was
the first notice day for March in tne New
Orleans market and notices for a few hundred
bales, probably less than 1,000 were circulated.
They were quickly stoppfed, and It “was claimed
that exporters were buying the March option.
At the lend of the first half nour of business
prices were 5 points over Friday’s colse.

the inactivity. Reports from the country were
mixed, but sections here and there in the belt
were said to be wel up with plowing and It
was quite generally claimed that sales of fer

to a moderate degree. At noon tne trading

DRY GOODS* REVIEW
NEW YORK, Feb. 24.—Dry foods markets
in retail and jobbing divisions have been active.
The primary division of the cotton goods mar
ket has been steady xvith business of a moder
ate character reported by mill agents and
commission houses, more than 25,000 bales of
goods have been purchased for shipment to China
m the last ten days and inquiries are still
steady. Buying of small lots ig a noteworthy
characteristic. - :
There has been a distinct Improvement in
the demand for colored cottons of the coarser
grades and prices have been hardening. Prints
in narrow widths are steady but quiet. Bleach
ed cottons remain firm with no stock accumulat
ing. Ginghams .ore In better demand than for
some time, particularly all ten cent dress ging
ham lines.
Converters are buying wide print trioth yfcru

fR. H. ROUNTREE & CO. COTTON LETTER.
NEW YORK, Feb. 24.—Prices declined last
week on rather digappointing figures as com
pared ‘ with those prevailing earlier in the
month. On the more active market of the week
previous spot houses took advantage of 'the sit
uation to start a very important operation—
namely, he transfer of a quantity of contracts
Ui he old crop into-the new.
These contracts have* been held for many
months against sales of spot cotton to spin
ners. The actual cotton may not be deliv
ered until next year, so that It became neces
sary to put these contracts forward into the
nex crop. Jfhile he market was in a stagnant
condition, anything of the kind was impossi
ble. But om the recent activity large blocks
of both May and July were sold and new crops
were purchased. As a result, October and July,

which were about 80 points two or three
weeks ago, became 40 points.
Outside of this, there was a tendency to sell
old crop mouths on the theory that there
would be plenty of cotton to go around. In
terior stocks have been piling up, showing an
absence of spot demand necessary to hold
prices.
As the temper of the trade is against the
bull side, any decided Improvement in prices,
after a normal upturn following the recent
70-point break, will bare to come from a more
aggressive demand for actual cotton on the
part of consumers.
N drying out the moisture in
eggs during incubation, of
^ course it is possible to dry
them too much and weaken the
germs, especially during dry, hot
weather, and a person will have to
use judgment in this respect.
Nearly every incubator manufac
turer send a chart showing the
exact stage the air cells should he
at different stages of incubation. A
great many people have an idea
that incubators should he supplied
with “moisture. Some incubators
are made and designed especially
to he used with^moisture and with
thesfc machines the directions
should be carried out fully. In
fact, every incubator manufacturer
knows best unjler what conditions
to operate their machines than any
or.f'' - else, and a person should al
ways carry out the instructions as
near as possible in operating any
particular make of incubators. The
general information as" outlined in
this article is intended to help
many who do not just exactly un
derstand many of the little details
and this information practically applies in a way to most any make
machine. * 1
For instance, in using a machine that is supplied with moisture a
person should watch the ventilator to -give the eggs the proper amount
of airing as the instructions for this particular machine demands. The
saifio thing should be done with hot air machines when moisture is not
used. My experience has been that if moisture is started in the machine
it should be kept up and is of more impotance during the first or middle
part of the hatch than it is at the latter part. Thousands_of chickens are
killed on the last two days of the hatch by applying moisture at a time
when it is not needed. Usually with a strong bunch of eggs the moisture
that ‘is thrown off from the little chicks in breathing and thC exercise
ihej;. are taking while getting out of ihe eggs will in most machines fur-
nis all the moist atmosphere that is needed to soften the lining of t{ie
eggs, and if the moisture is applied during the last two days it has' a
tendency to swell the chick in the egg to such an extent that it cannot
turn its headwind suffocates or djown many chickens at this stage.
The moisture proposition is a hard one to solve, and the only way a
person can tell anything about this matter is either by the use of a
moisture gage or actual experience of hatching large numbers of chick
ens. A person that 114s operated many incubators and has watched them
closely can usually tell by the feeling or the egg and the watching o) the
air 'cells if they need moisture or not. Usually a machine run on the
ground will come nearer controlling its own moisture or having the
right amount than in any other'place, especially during dry weather.
Often when a machine is retarded or the chickens, do not come out
of the shell as promptly as they should, by removing the chickens that
have already been hatched from the incubator and placing in another
incubator or in a lined box with a temperature practically the same as
the incubator, and by rolling the other eggs close togethe- in the machine
and placing a warm wet woolen cloth over the eggs many chickens can be
brought, out that could never get out otherwise. However, this is ba<l
practice and if the' incubator has been run properly this will not be
necessary, but occasionally has to\be resorted
I'think another big mistake that is often made is by people either
leaving the little chicks in the incubator too long or taking them out too
early. As near forty-eight hours from the the time the first chickens
begin to hatch as possible is the proper time tc remove them from the
incubator. The ventilator should he _
opened after the hatch is practically - , (Ly %
over and let the little, chicks get some
fresh air.

QUESTIONS ASKED AND ANSWERED.
QUESTION.
Atlanta, Ga. Is there any way
to persuade a hen to sit?
A. K., JR.
ANSWER.
There is no possible way to per
suade a hen to sit" until the time
comes for her to do so. Nature
usually takes care of this part of
the operation for a hen. Usually
by changing- the feed and giving
whole corn, and get a hen very fat
they will often stop laying and go
to sitting much 'sooner than they
would otherwise. Most people are
trying to find out how to make their
hens lay instead of trying to get
them to set. As a rule they .will
not begin sitting until they have
laid out th© clutch of eggs formed
in their system when they are ready
to become broody.
