NEW ORLEANS COTTON
NEW ORLEANS, March 6.—Cotton futures
opened steady, one point up to one point down,
compared with the close of yesterday. Cables
were better tjian due but did not stimulate buy
ing because of the ^favorable weather map and
the forecast of continued fair weather. In the
early trading buying orders about balanced,
neither side being able to secure any advantage.
At the end of the first half hour of business
prices were cne point over yesterday’s final
figures.
The market was qluet throughout toe morn
ing, bunt the understone was steady, some lit
tle supi>ort being derived from the demand
for covers from shorts. News from the belt
legarding new crop preparations was most
favorable, but did not have much effect on
pricer Bulls charged that the market whs
already oversold. Late in the morning the
trading months were 2 to 3 points under yes
terday’s close. At noon they were 2 points
under.

„ HAYWARD & CLARK COTTON LETTER.
NEW’ ORLEANS, March 6.—Political news is
again 'less favorable. There were fresh revolts
in Mexico and the European press says that
France and Germany are getting ready, aug
menting the peace footing of their arihies, while
little progress has been made in the Balkan
afalr.
Liverpool shows larger sales, total 10,000, at
one point lower quotations. Futures were about
a point better than due, showing steadiness.
Weather conditions were favorable; no rain
in the belt except .12 at Savannah and indi
cations are for continued partly cloudy to fair
weather. No rain except possibly a little in
west and south Texas.
New York advises that Augusta, Ga., reports
preparations six weeks to two months ahead
of last year, as continued bad weather during
the first three months of last year prevented
all work. Savannah says spring plowing much
ahead of last season and preparations are for
a big acreage.
The into sight for the week looks arouud 195,-
000 against 323,70}) last year. We compare
with mill takings for this week last yeaar of
419,000, with prospects of considerably smaller
takings this year. We bad another narrow
waiting market which gave way to dullness In
the second hour, prices sagging to 12.11 for
July. Continued good weather, unfavorable po
litical news, absence of spot demand with some
reports from the Interior of spot easiness and
prospects for bearish weekly statistics tomor
row caused a restriction of support and an
easiness in prices.
SjKits here are neglected and lower to sell.

tt N years to come the poultry in-
“ dustry of Georgia will be
looked upon as a great asset
and will bring thousands of dollars
to the farmers of this state that
heretofore they have never made.
The people of the great cities, also
the people of the country have
found out that eggs are about the
cheapest food they can possibly
buy or live off of, and more eggs
are now being used than ever be
fore. They are not only wholesome
and strengthening, but are one of
the cleanest and most substan
tial foods that is produced, and are
suited for use not only for chib
dren but for grown people as well,
and no meat product today of equal
vah.a as far as' nutriment is con
cerned can be had for anything.
like the same price as the same
number of pounds of eggs can be
had for. In this day and time
economy and trying to save every
cent that can be in the average
monthly expenses people are be-
ginning to think about these dif
ferences and it is forcing more
people to use eggs now as a matter of saving if for nothing else more
than ever before.
With the improved quality and production of eggs that are supplied
not only to Atlanta, but to many other cities, and it having been improved
and brought to a stage that it is at present in so short a time and now
being appreciated so much by the general public, there is no reason why
something similar could not be brought about with the milk products and
its production in and around our cities as milk and butter is of just as
much importance, if not more so, than. eggs. These two products could be
made the backbone and staple every day market products off of every
farm in Georgia, and the time will come when milk and butter products
will be raised to the highest standard and be produced more largely by
more people in this section than has been -;i years past.
The day has come when diversity is absolutely essential on every
plantation, and in the suburbs of nearly all cities and especially on the
small farms. Crop conditions have been such that it is unwise and unsafe
ror any farmer to depend absolutely on one > for his source of revenue,
and the sooner the farmers and small land owners take hold of these
little details and pay more attention to them the better off they will be
as weii as our entire country. There are not enough producers to supply
the demand for food products of every kind, and the burden is being
gradually forced on every family to try to produce at least a part of their
daily suppies. Necessity has brought this about. It will continue to do it
an in !t t° ® asy for every family to produce more of their vegetables
milk and butter, poultry products and canned goods and there is really
no excuse for their not doing so, only in cases where they have sufficient
h n ^ me r n °H t0 „ haVe U t0 do ' But even then a person can produce at
nn?f t0 t°if- products , ot quality that the cannot buy on an open market,
and for this reason alone people who can afford to buy all of their neces
sities should think of it in this light and try to produce as much of their
home supplies as possible, but necessity is the thing that has forced more
people today to take up these little by-products than any other one thing.
f. can ® ee a big difference during the past few months in the trade
hat is coming direct from the farmers and the farmers* wives. They are
buying roore poultry and more eggs than ever before during my experi-
ence ,n the poultry business, and it shows that the short cotton crop of
, last season has cut down their revenue or income to such an extent that
lt w S *if Wakened tllem , and many wm find out b„ making a small effort
I?,! t th h6y ® an a <*om P lish, the money they will derive from their efforts
f" d , t , hey T 1 . 11 further see that they have made a big mistake in neglect
ing these things as long as they have.
• The * m i lk Proposition over the entire country is one of the most
serious food propositions that confronts the public, and if there was some
way by which a lot of educational work could be brought abouT on ^s
line among the farmers they would most of them be onlv too glad to add
a small dairy herd to the average " 8 ™ aaa
farm, something that would bring
them a few dollars every day and *
make their lands richer.
Yours very truly,
