Within a short time his entire family died and Worner committed suicide. Worner’s clerk, Fred Kunz, took the market, but shortly afterward his lit tle daughter was scalded to death in a pickling vat, and a week after this accident Kunz was found dead under mysterious circumstances. If what you just ate is souring on your stomach or lies like a lump of lead, refusing to digest, or you belch gas and eructate sour, undigested food, or have a feeling of dizziness, heartburn, full ness, nausea, bad taste in mouth and stomach headache—this is indigestion. A full case of Pape’s Diapepsin costs only fifty cents and will thoroughly cure your out-of-order stomach, and leave sufficient about the house in case some one else in the family may suffer from stomach trouble or indigestion. Ask any pharmacist to show you the formula plainly printed on these fifty- cent cases, then you will understand why dyspeptic trouble of all kinds must go, and why they usually relieve sour, out-of-order stomachs or indigestion in five minutes. DIapeosin is harmless and tastes like candy, though each dose con tains power sufficient to digest and pre pare for assimilation into the blood all the food you eat; besides, it makes you go to the table with a healthy appe tite; but, what will please you most, is that you will feel that your stomach and intestines are clean and fresh, and you will not need to resort to laxatives or liver pills for biliousness or consti pation. This city will have many Diapepsin cranks, as some people will call them, but you will be cranky about this splen did stomach preparation, too, if you ever try a litle for indigestion or gastritis or any other stomach misery. Get some now, this minute, and for ever rid yourself of stomach trouble and indigestion.—(Advt.) Ga., March 3 8.—There will be no wedding at the home of Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Thomas, 721 Plum street, Thursday, March 20, as had been plan ned, for the simple reason that the wedding has already taken place. Will Gordon Evans, engaged to wed Miss Daisy Irene Thomas, Saturday learned that C. H. Hancock, his friend, was planning to get a license for the same purpose. Evans hastened to the Thomas home and calling his bride-to- be, demanded that she marry him then and there—and she did. It seems that both Evans and Han cock, who are city firemen, had been courting Miss Thomas and that Evans finally won her heart. Hancock, it is said, declined to give up the fight and only quit the field when the marriage ceremony had actually been performed. Freed After 37 Years In Prison, Eckart Now Searches For Lost Kin (By Associated Press.) WAUPIN, Wis., March 18.—Edward Eckart, of Pennsylvania, was today pa roled from the Wisconsin penitentiary after thirty-seven years of actual time served behind the bars. He was con victed of murder when twenty-one years old. Eckarts victim was Charles Peter son. The two were tramping in Wis consin during the excessively cold win ter of 1875. In a quarrel over a fire started beside the railroad track near Jefferson, Peterson was killed and Eckart was sentenced to life imprison ment for the murder. Ho never has admitted the crime, maintaining that Peterson was killed by a tramp. In the thirty-seven years of prison confinement never a mark of demerit has been placed against Eckart. He can not leave Wisconsin and his con duct must be exemplary in every way. In the third of a century or imprison ment his kin have deserted him and he does not know the whereabouts of his wife and daughter. Without money Eckart managed to bring his case before the supreme court of Wisconsin and the circuit court of appeals of the United States, but at every turn he was thwarted. Then he appealed to a Milwaukee newspaper man, who was instrumental in obtaining his conditional release. Holding that Judge L. S. Roan, of the criminal division of the Fulton su perior court, erred in his charge to the jury, the state courj; of appeals Tues day granted a new trial to Frank Mc Donald. the restaurant waiter, who was convicted and sentenced to eight years for stabbing to death O. B. Stevens, Jr., son of the former agricultural com missioner. Attorney W. M. Smith, representing McDonald, carried the case to the ap pellate court on a writ of error, con tending that Judge Roan’s charge was so worded as to place the burden of proof upon the accused rather than up on the state, and his contention was up held by the higher court, which re verses the judgment of the lower court. In its ruling the court of appeals says: “On the trial of one charged with murder, where the defense relied upon justifiable homicide as a de fense for a plea of self-defense, it was erroneous to instruct the jury to the effect that the burden was on the ac cused to establish this defense to the satisfaction of the jury and beyond a reasonable doubt. This placed the bur-, den on the accused, wHile the law places it on the state.”/ Stevens died from wounds sustained in a knife duel with McDonald. The altercation occurred in Auburn avenue about a year ago. McDonald was con victed of manslaughter. NAVAL STORES ILL . D18 qCH1CAGO - % art V SAVANNAH, Ga., March 18.—The principal topic in banking and business circles in Savannah today has been the suspension of the American Naval Stores company, the biggest corporation in business in Savannan. There Is every confidence that the company will re sume business after a meeting of the creditors in Savannah on Friday of this week. The company claims its assets are greatly in excess of its liabilities and this is believed to be true. The Sa vannah banks, all of whom are inter ested in the suspension, say that there is absolutely nothing to fear from the suspension. The assets of the compjfny are suf ficiently large to protect everybody if time is taken to do so. The meeting of the creditors here on Friday will be attended by the representatives of the biggest bankers in New l r ork, who are as greatly interested in the affairs of the concern as the local bankers. The news of the suspension of this big concern has been flashed around the world. It has offices In every busi ness center of any Importance on the globe. Its ships ply all the waters and its representatives are in Paris, London, Liverpool, Nice, Berlin and, in fact, wherever business is done. Mr. S. P. Shotter, the chairman of the board of directors, issued the statement rela tive to the suspension. He is in Savannah, but Mr. E. S. Nash, the president of the company, is abroad. It is believed he made an unsuccessful visit to European capitalists in an ef fort to secure financial assistance for the company and failed. NEEDED NEW CROP FINANCES. The company was badly in need of funds to finance the gathering of the new crop of naval stores which will be finding its way to market beginning the first of April. It is expected that this detail will be cared for when the meeting is held on Friday. In the mean time everybody in Savannah is doing everything possible to keep down any undue excitement because of the suspen sion. The bankers have issued a statement, calling for conservative action and ask ing that there be no undue activitj' because of the development. The naval stores market has beer, absolutely nil during the past several days because of the fact that the American Naval Stores company has been out of it as a buyer. This company has been the greatest purchaser of naval stores in the world and has been the biggest trader in the biggest naval stores market in the world. It is not known when Mr. Nash will be back from Europe, but it is expected he will try to -get here in time to at tend the meeting on Friday. STATEMENT ISSUED. The company issued the following statement: “In the absence of Mr. E. S. Nash, the president of the company, who is now in Europe, the secretary of the com pany presented the following statement: “The American Naval Stores company has been forced to suspend. The com pany has not lost 1. dollar and its as sets, at conservative present values, ex ceed its liabilities by about $4,000,000, but the credit of the company has slow ly become contracted, due almost en tirely to the persistent and continued assaults made upon the construction and contractual relations of the corpor ation by the government in its suits un der the anti-trust laws. “With two of its executive officers now awaiting the final determination of their case by the United States su preme court and tho government press ing a civil suit for the dissolution of th e company and the destrlction of its business (a business which it has taken thirty years of intelligent work to con struct, and which has opened up to the producers of naval stores the markets of the world) it goes without saying that the company is in no position to solicit new capital and must depend entirely upon its present resources. These resources, although large and valuable, with the company’s credit contracted and with the marketing of the new crop of naval stores almost at hand, are Insufficient to meet its finan- city requirements. “This situation has recently become still more acute by reason of the pre vailing financial stringency throughout the entire world; thus closing to ua al most at the last moment avenues for relief, which ordinarily would have been at our disposal. Miss Silla Camp, a dressmaker of 43 1*2 Whitehall street, divorced wife of C. M. Goddard, warmly defends her former husband and Mrs. Elmer T. Darden, whose husband killed Goddard in the Union depot a week ago. The DeKalb county courts granted a divorce and the restoration of her maiden name to the Atlanta dressmaker four years ago, after she had lived for four years with Goddard at his Stone Mountain home. Cruel treatment was the ground for divorce, but the present Miss Camp bears no ill will against her former husband. “Cossie Goddard was always straight,” says his wife, “and I know that I am telling the truth when I say that there was never anything wrong between him and Mrs. Darden.” The former Mrs. Goddard declares that she may be able to throw some light on the tragedy if she is called to testify at the trial of Darden, who is now held in the tower. Through his attorney, John Spence McClelland, Darden has waived a pre liminary hearing and the grand jury probably Will consider his case on Fri day.
