NEW ORLEANS. March .24.— Cotton __ futures opened steady at an advance of 4 to 5 points on buying, stimulated by reports of stormy weather over a large part of the country. Lit tle rain was shown over the cotton belt and those bearisbly inclined pointed out that little actual crop damage was possible. la the ab sence of trading in Liverpool the market was dull, although tlie tone was steady. At the end of the first half hour of business prices were 7 points over last Thursday's close. The market became dull and featureless around the middle of tbe morning, und what little buying power was in evldnece in the early trading was lost. This invited attacks from the short side and sufficient selling came out to cut down the best part of the advance. Sellers, howevre, became cautious after the forecast promising a freze for Texas was posted. At noon prices were 2 to 3 points over last week's final figurse. Brown was on the market with a car of fancy two-year-old short noru heifers, which he had been feeding since No vember. They were a classy bunch of light heifers, averaging 650 pounds. Exercise and Freslh Air Very Essential in the Successful 1 T HERE are two very important things that will he brought about from the good deep litter scratch pens. One is it will make your chickens take enough exercise to keep them healthy. It will keep their lungs working free ly on account ‘of the exercise they take. It will make them drink lots of water, and when the open front house Is used for a shed with an open front plenty fresh air can he supplied and will he freely taken into the chicken’s system if the house or shed is so constructed that they can get it. Another im portant thing in keeping your chickens in good health. Fresh air is not only good for people, but is absolutely essential in the suc cessful keeping of poultry. There are too many houses that chickens are compelled to stay in. that have not sufficient ventilation and the chickens are often kept shut up in close quarters when they should have more exercise and plenty fresh air to keep them in good health. Eggs set, from hens that are not kept under the conditions as out lined in this article cannot pro duce strong, healthy chicks, and as good hatches as one would like to secure cannot he expected or had from overfat hens that have not been made to take proper exer cise. The large birds especially must he watched closely and kept in proper condition if you ’expect to ; et results from them. A hen must be Fat to be a great layer and must consume a great quantity of certain kinds of foods. A poor hen will not lay. Therefore, you must not only keep your ‘hens in good condition and fat, but it must be hard fat or muscular fat, and to feed in sufficient quantities and to keep them in the proper condition it cannot he done unless they are made to take lots of exercise and have plenty pure, lresh air. But, birds kept uhder these conditions if they have been bred and raised right will produce great quantities of eggs and will give you returns for your efforts. At the present time there are probrbly ten people keeping chickens now in the cities or on a small scale in confinement to where only a few have been doing so in years past, and things have so changed in the keeping of poultry until the system of keeping them and the methods that are now practiced in doing so in getting the best results have been naturally changed, and I do not believe there is anything of more impor tance connected with this industry than the suggestions as outlined above that will help the average person who is keeping chickens under these conditions to get better Results from the food that they are feeding. The keeping of poultry goes hand and hand with the keeping up of a garden or a flower bed, and it is the little details and the little seeming insignifi cant things that but few people think of is where a person gets results and acco’mplishes the results that many others do not receive from their efforts. It is surprising sometimes what a difference a few little details looked after will bring in return to a person, and as the keeping of poul try on a limited scale by the average city person is of just as much im portance as the keeping of a cow and even more so than the average fam ily garden, the sooner people who keep poultry find out )iow they can get better results or good returns for their efforts the more they will be inter ested and a larger \umber of people will practice the keeping of poultry when they find it more profitable and find out the best methods by which they can obtain good results. It is surprising how many people who un dertake the keeping of poultry find that they know so little about it, and it, like any other line of work, requires more or less knowledge, and nothing will give a person this information like actual experience. But, when they once find out how to obtain results they are usually happy and will practice forever afterwards the methods they find best in handling their fowls. As the feed item is the most expensive and the most important to be looked after in poultry keeping naturally any one desires to get the best results they possibly can, and convert this food into as many eggs as pos sible. A large number of eggs that are never produced now could be had with the same food that the fowls are consuming if the scratch pens or the exercise pens were more carefully looked after. . ' It is not so touch the importance of the kinds of feed that are used as it is the variety and the way that it is fed, and the watching of your fowls and knowing at all times their condition and how they are utilizing the foods that are being fed to them 1 . In the raising of little chickens exercise and fresh air after they pass the critical stage is Just as essential to mature youngsters with great lay ing capacity and that will be healthy, robust specimens, and these details should be 'loked after carefully in the growing of your young chickens as well as in the -eeping of the old ones. Of course when the weather condF- tions are good to make chickens take exercise there are but few things better than to keep your runs and yards spaded up occasionally and oats or some other grains spaded under the soil. This will make not only an abundance of green food but will bring about in the open exercise that they cannot get and of a liftle different nature from when they are ken* confined. , ' As soon as weather conditions are good enough it is a splendid idea to get the yards either spaded up and planted in grain of some kind dur ing a good part of the year while the chickens are confined in them, for both old and young.
