Faocy PoMltry Aod Flowers T HE fancy poultry industry Is similar in many respects to the fascination and fancy for flowers. The. average person who is interested in flowers keep them and spend much time and money in flowers for thei real pleasure, recreation and entertainment that they receive from their care and to be admired by their friends as well as the general public. There are . but few people who ever spend money for flowers that ever hope to ' realize any direct revenue in return from them, outside of the people who propagate and grow flowers and plants as a business, but It is surprising what a great demand there is for flowers and flower seed all oyer the United States and thou sands of dollars are spent annually In this line of work. It is one of the hobbies or ways of amusement and ’ in diversion that produces health and happiness and brings pleasure and diversion to the minds of many men as well as women. A person never thinks for a mo ment about the expense or ever hopes to receive any income from the time and money devoted to their flowers. I often think that if people who are interested • in poul try and pigeons would look at this industry from the same standpoint that they would oe more satisfied with their venture than many of them usually are.' If for nothing else aside from the pleasure, amuse ment and receation that a nice yard of fancy birds will give to anyone they can as a rule spend a reasonable amount of money each year on something nice to look at and something that will be enter taining and hedp to entertain their friends and visitors, and aside from this, they can usually make a good per cent of profit on the investment and the time and attention devoted to their poultry, especially if they are interested in them and give them the proper care and get started right with something good. One of the greatest mistakes that most people make in starting with fancy poultry is starting on too large a scale and often with inferior birds rather than to have a few good ones and just enough to entertain them and not make the work too hard to start with by undertaking to keep too many, or often a lot of inferior ones. A few good birds, well care for, certainly will give splendid returns and pay to keep and a profit besides if common sense and judgment is used in their management. The operating and handling ( of a small incubator, an electric or a lamp machine, and the brooder is also attractive and furnishes amuse ment not only for yourself, but the children and your rriends. There fs also much to be learned in the management of both fowls and incubators, and you will as a rule find your visitors much interested in this work. You can often give information and teach little things that you have learned by experience to your friends that will help them, and in many ways the keeping of a few fancy fowfs or pigeons will interest and enter tain many that ybu least expect. There are not enough people, especially in the cities, who are paying attention to this line of work. There is room for lots of education in this work, and many people who now never give it a thought, could help to do great work In this respect, and little different from flowers they could be producing something that would help feed their families as well as give pleasure at the same time while this work is being conducted. The same thing can he said of a nice vegetable garden and many people would be much healthier and far better satisfied and contented if they had some of these little things around the home to occupy many of their spare moments that either go tQ waste or bring about discontentment that could often be converted into usefulness and profit, either to themselves or to others if they would take up poultry culture and look upon it similar to the way they do with flowers and the growing vegetables and other lines of amusement that are often far more expensive than a few chickens would he. Any one who has a liking for flowers, vegetables and fruits, often have more y«sv or less inclination for either good V' (fly poultry or live stock of some kind. The remedy prescribed for my flock cer tainly put them in a thriving: and healthy condition. If J you will allow me to trouble you again, let me ask you one more question. After buying stock from one of the leading poultry plants In the state (Single Comb White Leg horns and S. C. Rhode Island Reds) I find that not a single male in my flock comes up to the standard in respect to its comb. Each and every one of them, including the parent stock has at least six points if not more and as far as I can see all of my young cockerels ai*e in the same boat. In other respects, color, form, etc., they appear to be all right, but in this respect they are certainly imperfect. Can you tell • me what steps to take to remedy this imper fection? Your letter is of much interest and gives a point that hundreds of poultry breeders, especially new be- giners, have laid too much stress on, that is, a five point comb as out lined in the standard for most of the single comb breds. This section in the standard varieties is of but little importance. Good combs by careful selection can be bred into any flock within a few years, but as a rule the comb amounts to eight to ten points, according to the dif ferent varieties, when the back, breast, and general outline of the chicken amounts to ten to twelve points in these sections. Yt is of far more importance to get the shape sections and colors right than It is to have a five point comb. The comb can be far more defective by having thumb marks, by being too large and beefy, or too small or bad sha,pe otherwise and can be deduct ed or cut more seriously for these defects than by not having the exact METAL MARKET. MORGAN’S DEATH HAD NO EFFECT ON LONDON STOCKS. LONDON, March 31.—The death of J. Plerpont Morgan had little or no affect on prices on the London stock exchange today. On the other hand too large a comb, or thumb marks can *be dis counted according to the standard, one-half to two and one-half on each section, and a bird With a flat or undeveloped breast or a back too narrow or too short, or a body out of proportion, in these sections the standard cut could be made one-half to three points in either section which would be a far more serious defect than one-half point discount on the comb. The corns do not produce eggs or meat and add but litle td the general appearance or general char acteristics of your birds and too much stress is laid on the combs of all standard birds. As the past few years they have become so near perfect that a large per cent of them breed good naturally and by using male birds especially with good combs it only takes a short time to get a fairly god average comb on all your birds. Of course, it is: not a good idea to breed from any bird that has side sprigs or very defec tive combs as it is sure to repro duce, but it is of far more im portance to pay more attention to the genral shape and color of your birds than it is to combs.
