NEW YORK, Oct. 13.-—The Philadel
phia Athletics won the baseball cham
pionship of the world for 1913 at the
Polo grounds this afternoon by defeat
ing the New York Giants 3 to 1 in the
fifth and deciding game of the series.
With the score of games standing 3
to 1 in their favor, the American
league representatives went in to clinch
the series, and before the masterly-
playing of the Mackmen the National
leaguers had absolutely no chance.
Connie Mack, anxious to finish the
struggle on the final day of the week,
sent Eddie Plank, his veteran south
paw, to the mound, and John McGraw,
his back to th e wall, called on Christy
Mathewson to check the victorious
rusn of the Athletics and thus gain for
his team a breathing spell.
PERSONAL. TRIUMPH.
Both old masters of curve and break
responded nobly to the call of their
managers and clubs, but the Giants,
unable to help Mathewson by even
mediocre batting, fell victims to the
vicious hitting, fast fielding combina
tion which lias again raised the stand
ard of the American league over that
of the National organization. The vic
tory was a personal triumph for
Plank, but the downfall of the Giants
carried no odium for MathewsdnT who,
besides pitching an excellent game, with
but two days of rest since his victory
of Wednesday, made one of the two hits
scored against# his rival in the box.

ST. PETERSBURG, Oct. 13.—Con
firmation of the reported discovery of
new land in the Arctic ocean was re
ceived by the Russian admiral today
in a brief official wiroless report from
Commander Wilkitzsky, of the Russian
navy.
The new land extends fn a narrow
strip from about sixty miles north of
Cape Tchelyuskin, also known as
Northeast cape, the northern termina
tion of the Asiatio continent, to a i
degrees north.
The admiralty expedition, on boar!
the transports Taimyr and Walgaton,
left Vladovostok in July last and sur
veyed the coast from Kolyma to Cape
Tchelyuskin.
Commander Wilkitzsky is a son of
the famous hydrographer who died
last year. He wanted to go west to
the river Yenisei to winter, but met
with solid tae, and on this account
proceeded in a northerly direction,
where he discovered land extending for
200 nautical miles.
The expedition was then compelleu
by the ice to continue toward the east.
When passing Bennett island in lati
tude 76.40 north, longitude 148-30 east,
they found the diaries and documents
of the expedition under Baron Toll.
whi<jh was lost in 1900. They also dis
covered a new island.
The expeditions under Baron Nor-
denskjold, Fridtjof Nansen and Baron
Toll passed between Cape Tchelyuskin
and the newly discovered land without
noticing its presence. Discovery of the
new' land is regarded as having the
most important bearing on ice condi
tions in the Kara sea.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13.—President
Wilson Friday wrote a personal letter
to Representative Henry D. Clayton, of i ^-‘e re *cTosed at
Alabama, who Is a candidate for the tives of Jones
senate, telling him that it was mde-
apensible to the carrying out of the
democratic party’s anti-trust program
to have him remain in the house as
chairman of the judiciary committee.
The president made no mention of the
Alabama senatorial contest but said
he was greatly concerned at the pros
pect of losing Mr. Clayton from the
house.
Representative Clayton tonight issued
the following statement:
“Recognizing the president as the head
of the party. I do not now’ see how I
can refuse to accede to his expressed
wishes. I will, however, make a formal
reply to the president’s letter in a day
or two.”
Mr. Clayton told friends tonight that
he would withdraw from the senatorial
race. He was appointed by Governor
O’Neal, of Alabama, to fill the unex-
plred term of the late Senator Johnston.
His credentials were held up, however,
so his withdrawal would mean the end
of the tangle that arose over the fail
ure of the legislature to provide - elec,-
toral machinery for a United States
senator under the latest constitutional
amendment.
“I forsee,” wrote the president, “the
chief responsibilities of the next session
will lie with the committee on the Judi
ciary, of which you are chairman. Our
work cannot be finished in a single ses
sion. If I dared I would beg you to re
main in the house.
Mr Clayton’s withdrawal would leave
the senatorial race to be decided be
tween Representative Underwood and
Representative Hobson. Mr. Underwood
had announced himself as a candidate
for the long term beginning jVJarch 4,
1914, but if there is a special election
to fill the present vacancy, it is be
lieved here he may enter it.
