(Special Dispatch to The Journal.)
CORDELE, Ga., Nov. x 13.—Quin
Smith, who was perhaps fatally wound
ed in the shooting affray at Raines,
in this county, yesterday afternoon, in
which R. E. Holliday; Troy King an)
Harvey Smith, a brother of Quin Smith,
were instantly killed, is still living this
morning, although his attending physi
cian says he is in a precarious condi
tion.
Smith made the sensational statement
this morning that he was shot from the
back by Ed Holliday, son of R. E. Hol
liday, wno was present when the shoot
ing commenced, declaring that young
Holliday fired the bullet which pene
trated Smith's back and inflicted the
wound which will probably result fatally
for him. Smith declares that he tace i
R. E. Holiday when the shoting began
and kept his face in that position dur
ing the duel. He received, according
to reports, two bullets from the pistol
of R. E. Holliday, which inflicted only
flesh wounds. Young Holliday has not
been arrested.
Herbert Williams, son of State Sena
tor Isiah Williams, was a bystander
when the duel began. Two bullets pene
trated h-is overcoat near his heart. It
is said that there were three other men
on the scene at the time of the shoot
ing, but that they ran rapidly to cover.
King and the Smith boys were at
Raines, said to be awaiting the arrival
of R. E. Holliday on his return from
Cordele.
The trouble, it is said, grew out of
the new stock law regulations which
went into effect in Crisp county on
January 1. It is said that Holliday
impounded the hogs of King and that
the owner was away from home. King
went to Holliday’s house and turned the
hogs out of his lot. This, it is said,
resulted in the charge of hog stealing
by Holliday against King.
The four men met at Raines yesterday
afternoon and the shooting is said to
have started with such suddenness that
it was over before bystanders knew
what had happened.

WOMEN OFFER HOMES
TO BOYS OF CORN CLUB
Letters continue to come to Secretary
Walter G. Cooper, of the Atlanta cham
ber of commerce, from well known At
lanta women who entertained Georgia
corn club boys in their homes last year
and who express a desire to have them
again this time.
In addition letters have been received
from those who expected to entertain
some of the boys but who did not ow
ing to the fact that although 700 boys
came to Atlanta, more homes were of
fered than there were boys te entertain.
These latter have expressed a desire to
have them this year. With a thousand
boys coming this time it is not likely
they will have the same, experience, for
the probabilities are that every home of
fered for their entertainment during
the two or three days they will be here
will readily be used.

HAND
ENGRAVED
25 Year Gold Case
In the new battleship Texas, whose
trials off Rockland, Me., have inter
ested the world, Uncle Sam has the
greatest battleship afloat. This photo
graph shows her in the trial in which ?
she went faster than the government 1
requirement of the contractors. That |
was after engine trouble had delayed-
her best efforts.
The Texas went over the measured ;
mile course three times each at ten, j
twelve, fifteen, seventen knots. She
was manned by 750 men from the
yards of the builders at Newport
News. The navigating officer was
Captain YV.. G. Melvin, who had with
him Captain A. W. Grant, who will
command the Texas when she is
turned over to the government.
The Texas is today the most pow
erful battleship afloat. The distinguish
ing feature is the battery of ten four-
teen-inch guns placed in five turrets,
three forward and two aft, all on a
central line so arranged as to fire over
one another. The Texas is eleven feet
longer than any battleship in the Unit
ed States navy, being 573 feet over all.
Her beam is 95 feet 2 1-2 inches, which
will give her almost fifteen feet leeway
in passing through the Panama canal
locks. Her draught of 28 1-2 feet will
enable her to enter at least four of the
Atlantic navy yards and one on the
Pacific coast. •

Jim Ham Lewis Gets
Call from Tumulty
On Pindell Episode
BY RALPH SMITH.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 13.—Senator Jim
Ham Lewis, former Georgian, today in
advertently furnished a possible explana
tion of how the ramous Lewis-Pindeil let
ter concerning the Russian ambassador
ship became public. The mystery sur
rounding the publication of the private
letter by the Hearst papers has divided
interests with the disclosures contained
i nthe communication.
As Senator Lewis was bowing and
backing his way out of the office of Sec
retary Tumulty at the White House, he
was interrupted in the midst of one ot
his most graceful salaams by Tumulty.
“Oh, Senator,” hailed Tumulty, “here Is
a package of letters you left on my desk:
my, but you are careless with your cor
respondence.”
The office full of people laughed at
Tumulty’s veiled alusion to the'disappear
ance and publication of the Pindell let
ter
“Pes, Sir Joseph," smiled the courteous
Lewis, “the envelope contains a letter
from a charming lady, and I thank you
most cordially for calling my attention to
the oversight."
He took the envelope and again bowed
himself out of the room amid a gale of
laughter.
MENHADEN FISH A-PLENTY
DESPITE ENORMOUS HAULS
WASHINGTON, Nov. 13.—Fear that
the fishing Industry might be ruined
by the immense catches of menhaden,
used in the manufacture of oil and fer
tilizer. seems to be dispelled by a re
port from the United States fish com
mission which declares the supply of
menhaden does not appear to be dimin
ishing. The menhaden, which is food
for other fish, is exceedingly prolific
and it is thought in spite of the big
catches along the Atlantic coast, the fu
ture supply is In no danger. The pres
ent season is not over but figures for.
last year show 6,660,000 gallons of oil
and 88,000 tons of fertilizer were made
from the menhaden. This was valued
at $3,700,000,

the tracks, when trains from both

between them and his legs crushed, j
Earlier in the day the boy had gone <

Meanwhile repeated inquiries “Who are
