Flames on Steamship at Sa

After Hard Fight
(Special Dispatch to The Journal.)
SAVANNAH, Ga., Nov. 17.—Five <>:
the best men in the ranks of the Sa
vannah fire department were overcome
with smoke and twenty others reeled into
the open seeking relief from the stiflin
atmosphere in a sturdy contest wage:
today with fire aboard the Briti.s
steamship Ulidia, at the mpunici] ;
docks. Tonight the fire is out after i,
all-day fight.
The ship presented a melodrama,
appearance, for huge columns of grayH
blue smoke curled up from hatch X<
3, where fire was discovered las
night while th.e vessel was on the higl
seas, but, thanks to the excellent won
accomplished by the fire laddies o
Savannah under the direction of Chio.
Monroe, the stubborn blaze was con
quered after a long fight.
The firemen worked with every ounc,
of energy at their command hour after
hour and the strain from the wear an-i
tear was plainly shown.
LOADED WITH COTTON.
Captain McClenahan, in command o
the steamship, states the entire amount
of prime cotton on the vessel, 702 bales
was stored in number three hatch.
Steel bulkheads separated the various
compartments of the vessel in the
freight holes for the reason it was not
thought probable that the fire would
spread to the remainder of the cargo,
which is composed of about 7,000 bales j
of cotton linters.
Fire Chief Monroe, .however, decided
to take no chances of the fire spreading
to the other hatches, and a force of
laborers was secured and the linters in
bales quickly hoisted from the hatch
and thrown on lighters alongside the
ship.

VAPOR TREATMENTS
FOR COLD TROUBLES
Are now used in all hospitals. The
vapors carry the medication to the lungs ;
and air passages without disturbing the '
stomach. When Vick’s “Vap-O-Rub”

over the throat and chest, these vaporsi
—of Menthol, Thymol, Eucalyptol, j

fifteen minutes. Vick’s is fine for head j

People who have been poulticing and
anointing an old sore for years and years
marvel at the way it heals quickly after
using S. S. S.
When you come to realize that the skin
and the flesh beneath are composed of a
network of tiny blood vessels you solve
the mystery.
There are wonderful medicinal proper
ties in S. S. S. that follow the course of
the blood stream just as naturally as the
most nourishing food elements.
It is really a remarkable remedy. It
contains one ingredient, the active pur
pose of which is to stimulate the tis
sues to the healthy selection of its own
essential nutriment. And the medicinal
elements of this matchless blood purifier
are just as essential to well-balanced
health as the nutritious elements of the
meats, grains, fats, and sugars of our
daily food.
Not only this, but if from the presence
of some distributing poison there is a
local or general interference of nutrition
to cause boils, carbuncles, abscesses and
kindred troubles, S. S. S. so directs the
local cells that this poison is rejected and
eliminated from their presence.
Then, too, S. S. S. has such specific
stimulation on these local cells as to pre
serve their mutual welfare and a proper
relative assistance to each other.
Not one drop of minerals or drugs is
used in its preparation. Ask for S. S. S.
and just insist upon having it. And if
you desire skillful advice and counsel
upon any matter concerning the blood and
skin, write to the medical department,
