Reports from Fall River that mill operatives had voted against a strike and optimistic reviews of the textile situation helped tile early advance. NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 4.—Cotton futures opened steady at an advance of three to five points on good cables and unfavorable weather In the fields. Son after the call prices stood 12,000 bales caused bullish comment and pros pects of contimied wet weather over the south resulted in fear that farmers would not be able to gather the remnants of the crop still in the fields. Soon after the call prices stod five to six points up. Longs took profits on a generous scale and at the end of the first half-hour of business prices were only one to two points up. The market was favorably influenced by the report that a private bureau was out with re turns of 11,998,000 bales of cotton ginned up to December 1. This stimulated moderate buy ing. The market was #lso helped by telegrams from Fall Rilver telling of a more encouraging turn of the labor Situation, while telegrams froth Texas' said that heavy rains and floods were resulting in damage to the small amount of cotton yet in the fields. The best the mar ket did on these features was to stand 5 points over yesterday’s final figures. Recent buy er* were sellers at every -point advance. Native mat ins, $3.75@4.85; lambs, $5.2507.95. Notes on the Potmltry Show 'IE White Orpington class at .the poultry show has created a sensation. One exhibitor felt lii.e he could come back this year ami find his competitors where he left them last, but he was badly mis taken and the birds that won last year, some of them were not even irood enough to get fifth place this season. There are seventeen breed ing pens of White Orpingtons and the single class contained two solid rows clean across the auditorium. This variety of fowls seem to be here to stay. They have so many good, points to make them popular that at most of the shows this sea son this class has been one well filled. The winning pen of White Orpingtons at this show could prob ably win at Madison Square or any other place in the world, and it has been many a day since such a pen of birds have been gotten together. And. the good part of it all is most of them are Georgia-raised and raised by a lady at that. Birds costing as high as $150 each in this class have been placed below first, showing that in this day and time it takes good ones to win. The Black Orpington class, while not quite so large in numbers is fully as good in quality, and probably the best cockerel shown anywhere this season is cooped at the Atlanta show. Nothing in this section of countrv has ever been seen to equal this bird. In females and in pens birds of equal quality can be found in this show. In the Barred. Plymouth Rock class there was also another surprise Many birds in the single entry were such in quality as has never been seen in this section of country, showing that this popular variety is still in the front and that the breeders are maKing them better every day. There are five cockerels In this class that there is only a toss-up between them, and the cock birds show quality throughout. Such color, clean and snappy has never been seen before. The pens are also good and there are some mag- nificent birds among them. In the White Plymouth Rock class many a bird that was not placed at all could have won heretofore in many shows held in Atlanta. These birds have improved not only In size but in dolor, and the class brought out this year shows that the breeders throughout the south have been at work on quality and have more constitution and size in their White Rocks than ever before. This has always been a popular variety in the south and the quality brought out at the Atlanta show this year does credit to the breeders who produce them. Several good sales have already been made In both the Barred and White Plymouth Rock classes. Birds that were bought at long prices from eastern breeders have been placed below Georgia- bred and raised birds. This Is sufficient evidence that we can produce here quality as good as money can buy from any part of the country. The Rhode Island Red class again this year brought out a lot of birds way up in quality, far ahead of what last year was. The pens not quite so numerous hut everyone showing quality, and they also show a big Im provement both in type and in color. A majority of the birds, especially In the single entry In this class are uniform in size and in color and proves that our climate and the lines that our southern breeders are working on are correct and that Georgia is now producing probably the highest class of Reds of any state in the union. Birds bred and raised in Georgia have won m many states^ this year. A big string of Georgia raised Reds will go to Madison Square the last week in this month, and it goes without saving that they will get their share of ribbons. The Buff Plymouth Rock class shows quality throughout. The club having its annual meeting here has made the breeders try themselves, and they have brought out probably the best in color, type, etc., in Buff Plymouth Rocks Atlanta has ever seen. White Leghorns, as usual, lead in entries, both in singles and pens, and such a class of White Leghorns as can rarely be found anywhere in the country for three years in succession have been shown at Atlanta. These great little egg machines have won for themselves distinction only enjoyed by this one breed and the White Leghorns exhibited now, nearlv every one show a uniform type and quality little different from what it used to be years ago. The breeders have settled down to a ousiness proposition in this variety and all are bred now on business lines. The pen that won in the American laying competition is now on exhibition at this show and it is woi*th a trip going a long ways to. see and study the type of this pen of fowls, and they are attracting much attention, and show that they are the money mak ers of the twentieth century when it comes to eggs. The exhibit at this show proves conclusively that they are the chicken most admired by the gen eral average of people who are in the poultry business. CO, At, — COTTON EXCHANGE ADOPTS AMENDMENTS TO RULES Government Type Standards, Monthly Revision of Spot Quotations Adopted NEW YORK, Dee. 4.—Five amendments to the rules of the New York cotton exchange pro viding for the adoption of government type standards, monthly revision of differences in spot quotations and changes iu the method of classification and in enforcing the commission law were adopted today by large majorities at a meeting of the exchange members. The amendments, provide for the elimination of the following grades: Good ordinary, low middling tinged, strict middling, fair to fair. The by-laws regarding complaints of viola tion of the commission law was changed to pro vide that the committee on commissions shall receive all complaints of such violations and present to the supervisory committee such com plaints as in the opinion of a majority of the committee on commission may warrant proceed ings. For violation of commission law the penalty for the first offense was changed from suspen sion for “not less thRn six months” /to “not exceeding twelve months.” ST. LOUTS CASH QUOTATIONS. Some of the bull lenders supported the market from the time but the crowd were against an advance and sold on all rallies. Wall street was said to be a seller al$o the south. The bears continue to talk lack of spot demand and stagnaht trade conditions, as a basis for their bearish sentiment. This may be true in some quarters, l ut we must not overlook the large Liverpool sales the past few days and fair exports. This 1 would not indicate that the wheels of progress have stopped altogether. There is apparently a disappointed feeling around the floor that the market does not decline and as some of the bulls express it, “it’s sometimes dangerous to sell a .dead market.”—Anderson.
