Scattered Liquidation and Bear

Private Cables Reported Small

, .By Associated Fraas.)
NEW YORK. Jac. 3.—Liverpool made a very
favorable gbowin; at the reopening of the cot
ton market there today. But sentiment around
the local ring was unsettled by the latest sub
marine developments, and prices weakened un
der scattering liquidation. The opening was
aftady at an advance of 6 points to a decline
of 2 points, but prices -oon eased off. with
January selling down to 12.05. March 'to 12.30
and May to 12.51. or 15 to IS points under the
• losing figures of last Friday. Weakness lb
the stock market was also attributed to nerv
ousness over the international situation and
probably coatrtbutrd to the decline in cotton,
but there was no change in tbe early news
from tbe south and private cables reported
. very small offerings in Liverpool.
House' with Liverpool osineetion took a good
n_any contracts out of the market on the early
break, presumably to undo straddles at the
wider differences, and more reassuring reports
with reference to tbe latest submarine disas
ters were followed by a steadier tone later in
the morning. Businss became less active after 1
the eloae abroad but prices rallied several potato
st middav with January arouud 12.23. Marti
12.45. and May 12.67. or about net unchanged
to 3 points lower.
Trading continued qniet during the middle ot
the afternoon with prices ruling steady at a
i net decline of about 2 to 4 point*.

NEW YOKK, Jan. ». —Coffee: Klo, No. 7,
7% cents.
JOHN F. CLARK 4 CO.'S COTTON LETJER
NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 3.—Liverpool opened
the week and the year with a strong market,
showing futures about 7 points higher than
due and quoting spots 9 points higher, with
sales of 10.000 bales.
As Liverpool was fully aware of political de
velopments over Sunday and their probable bear
ing on the markets, the strength must be en
tirely due to business activity In I-ancashlre and
the “trained supply situation in Liverpool, which
is difficult of relief, as more tonnage Is de
stroyed and the freight rate from here is ru
mored to have been advanced to 83 a hundred.
Shipment In American bottoms and under
American protection seems to be tbe only real
notation, and a more in that direction appears
to Im- pressed before congress by southern in
terests.
Our market opened higher on the strong show
ing by Liverpool, but experienced a sharp re
action of 20 points in the first 13 minutes
■ n general selling on apprehension derived from
I«olitical news over Sunday. Several large
British liners were torpedoed in tbe Medlter
frauean with reported loss of American life.
•Political significance of the act is not fully
f li-termined yet. as. according to Consular re
-1 [torts the skips destroyed were of a semi-military
“•■iiaracter.kbe’ng manned and armed with gun*.
•It will take *om< time to define- and settle
• details and the trade is again In hot water
fro er politics. The quickly recurring uncer
•tainty cannot have but an unsettling effe-t pn
•supjiort and there la a feeling that politics
any way will be most strenuous during the
“next three months, which may induce the llqui
f-latlon of speculative interests.
c The market rallied In the second hour from
;the frat depression which had carried March as
’low as 12.17 and traded again to 12 29 on a
f calmer vlc.v of political matters, but appre
•hension has by no means subsided. Without
j this disturbing factor there could hardly be a
■ question of a tuillish tendency prevailing, as
[ cotton news proper is so bullish. Spots here
' are firm but quiet so far today as the demand
«ccm.» to hesitate and to be waiting for political
developments and their effect on the futures
markets.
| Ne v lork wires that Wall street operators
I are selling on the idea that political matters
will ebeck apeculative support and tire southern
holders into liquidation.
