them go there and would do every
thing in his power to promote the

of which are free. There are many
of the members ot the Guards who
can easily go to New Holland, but
who cannot go to Rome, and we think
tlio best thing they can do ia to go to

On Thursday night, July 1st.,
there will be offered the citizens a rare
treat in the shape ot an opera render
ed by the amateur talent of our city
with a full orchestral accompanyineut.
The piece “Doctor of Alcantara” is
exceedingly humorous, full of ridicu

set to bright aud sparkling music,
giving to the hearer that most pleas
ing of all sensations thus experienced
after gay and brilliaut music aud
hearty laughter.
The plot is one that engages the
atteutiou from the first, aud bolds the
auditor wrapt in interest to the finale,
it being the old story of love and hu
man contrariness each working to
ward an end, and at the same time
blindly plotting against it
The characters are well and fittingly

[communication .]
Athens, June 22, 1880.
Editor Daily Banner,—Near
Sir;—I have read with pleasure your
articles upon the subject of the dona
tion by the City of the City Stock in
the North Eastern R. R., to any com
pany who will complete the road, and
give os a sufficient guapntee on our
freight rates. I heart'Iy approve of
the proposition, and 60 does every cit
izen with whom I have conversed upon
the subject.
Bat I think it should not slop with
the Ciiy of Athens Stock. Why
should not every stockholder be w fil
ing to donate his or her stock in the
same manner? So far as the actual
value of the stock is concerned it lets
none. It is nominally worth from
85.00 to $7.00 per share now. In five
years it will have not even nomin:<l
value. It is all the road can do now
to pay the interest on the bonded
debt. The road is now comparatively
new; lhat is it is oniy about half worn
out. Repairs so tar have been light
But the next few yeais will make a
great] deal of difference. The rails
wiil have to be replaced by new iron.
The box cars will begin to give out;
the bridges will need repairing, aud
in fact everything ab jut the road will
require repairs. The money now used
to pay iulerest will have to be used
for that purpose. The mortgages on
the road will be foreclosed aud the
road, slock and all control of it, will
pass out of our hands. Now, this is no
speculation, but actual tact. Ask any
rail road man how long iron rails last,
and he will tell you irow ten to fifteen
years,.accordiug to use and weight ui
rails Now, while the N. E. R. R
rails have but moderate use they are
unusually light. If they last five years
more they will do well.'
If these are laets aud any stockhol
der can easily ascertain that they are,
of what possible, present or future
mine can the stock have, unless
enough additional money is subscribed
from some source to complete the
road ?
Why, the second mortgage bonds
are dull sale at 75 cts. It second
mortgage bonds are worth only 75 cts
how absurd to suppose ti.at the slock
is woitli anything. lLts it even paid
a dividend ? Never. Is there any
prospect of paying one? Not the
slightest. If the road were sold to-day
in its present condition, would there
be a dollar lett for the stockholders
after paying the bonded debt? Not
one. Then why hold on to your stock
which is worth nothing lo-ouy, aud
less than nothing to-morrow ?
Let us all give it up, il by doing so
we can secure the building of the
road, aud I firmly believe it can.
With your permission i will prepare
A statement in figures of the value ot
R. R. block and especially cl the N.
E. R. K. Stocks, and show the advan
tages of a sun under ot all the slock to
promote the extension. This I will
present in some early issue of your
paper. Yours Truly,
Citizen.
