Athens boasts of a new “Dutch
man” and a jolly clever fellow he is
loo. He is handsome and tells a
ood story, and [.reposes to open a
new business in first-class clothing
and Gent’s furnishing goods. Yon
will find him at M. E. Youngs old
stand As an introduction we will
record one of his stories as retailed to
<;ur local on yesterday.
AJ ‘Dutchman’’ has a cage ot
“hootifnl vierbling bierrds” and he
asks his friend to tell him how to de
termine which is the male bird and
which is the female bird, llis friend
gives it up, when the owner explains:
“You take a veerrin and put era iu
.le kaige, if he take cm, he vas de
male bierrd. if she take era. she
vas do female bierrd.’’
who fails to forecast the future of [he
Democratic party in Georgia. On the”
one hand there has always been -a
wing of the party zealous for the ele
vation of true merit, the reward of
true greatness and an honest, success
ful administration ot State affairs.
Those who feel all tliis, have a pride
in their public men and an abiding
faith in the wisdom and be'neficence
of the principles banded down’to us
from Jefferson and Jackson. On the
other hand there is a wing of our
party that cares nothing and knows
nothing of the science of government.
Success, with it, is not only the mi as-
ure of [Ktpularity, but a’so of. right.
Ignorance, venality, knavery and dis
honesty are the elements which enter
into calculations of the enemies of our
regular Democratic body. History
records how these camp followers, ou
more than one occasion ate up the
substance of a great army and thus
brought defeat and death to the State.
History records how from the personal
ambition of a few men, the whole i’al.
tic of a great constitution was scat
tered to the winds; and freedom of
rhe poor became only the mere uann
for plunder and public rapine trade
tho forms of law.
We say it matters not how the con
test now raging at our capital
terminate. The seeds of discord
already sowed broadcast over Geor
gia. The minerity at present have no
redress within the ranks of the Dem
ocratic party. We must bea' with our
deluded brethren uutil reason and
common sense, honor and honesty,
truth and patriotism shall again bear
sw ay in the public rniud. A few hold
shameless men have with impudence
and money corrupted . the
hearts of the people; and
they are being ruthlessly led
by their noses towards men and meas
nr.-H that arc bound to work shame
and disgrace u|>on Georgia. A few
more months and the political ring
masters will show their hands. The
syndicate cares nothing for the people
or their interests. Plunder and pop
ularity for the time being are the only
rewards sought alter. Immortality,
the 11ne reward of noble services to
mankind, has no charms for medioc
rity, ignorance and vulgarity. As
Senator Hill says in his letter “ Per
sonalism would not Lake the place ot
patriotism.’’ This i3 the key note to
our situation. It only needs the fra
ternization at any time with foes from
without to destroy the power of the
Democratic party in Georgia. Wise
men see this truth and confess it.
Really great men see it and deplore
it. n o. whom every Georgian is
proud—men who would as soon carry
a swill harrell through the streets a*
to stump the Slate and mouth billing-
gate English in their own interests—
are this day mourning over the repu
tation of our own government so long
at the mercy of fraud and knavery.
The office no longer seeks the man,
but the man the office and the people,
|*)or fools that they are, throw up
their hats and shout nt their own di
honor.
But there is some satisfaction left.
A read ion is bound to follow. Retri
bution is as sure as death. It is only
a question of time; for, thank heaven,
we know that “the mills ot the go Is
grind slowly and they grind exceeding
small.” Let no little man think he is
safe from public indignation. His pun
ishment may be in the distant future;
but it is waiting lor him all the same
—“Nemesis hath a quiet patience.’’
We repeat then that' our present
gubernatorial fight is a matter of but
little moment. If by chance, Col
qui: t should be defeated, (which is
violently improbable) the groat
wounds of the democratic party are
not healed The clique to which he
belongs has a strong hold upon the
life of Georgia. It will not letgo for a
defeat of only two years. Should he
bo renominated it only makes our
position more dangerous and places
