A difficulty occurred on fre incom ing excursion train yesterday after noon this side of Union Point, which came very nearly terminating quite seriously to all |>arti< s concerned. The cause ot the difficulty was as fol lows, so lar as we have been enabled to learn: It seems that Wa-h Scott a colored excursionist purchased it watermelon for himself and wife, and while in the act of cutting it, was approached by a colored man in the car t.;ho de manded a pierce in order to satisfy au aching void within the region of l«ts- ketdom. Scott refused tc gratily bis appetite, whereupon liis unknown friend used some very insulting lan guage. Scott made an effort to strike him, but failed. During the melee Scott’s finger was very badly hit tun. At this stage of the proceedings Mr J A Hannon an eugineer of the Ga. K Rand his fireman Mr J M llisilop undertook to expell the combatants front the car. In tbe meantime con ductor Lombard was called in and learning the facts took possession at Scott aud quelled the difficulty. Upon the arrival of the train at Athens, it seems that tho l ad feeling was in some way revived, and Scott proceed ed to mako a lively effort to revenge h’.m-elf upon Messrs. Hannon and Hishop. We have noticed by report of the press throughout tbe State and pri vately tbe effectiveness of tin* police forces of our Sister cities and can say advisedly and with much gratification that the police force of A then- under the command and direction of our popular chief of police, Mr. Cobb Davis, is inferior to none in the State. We base our opinion upon the fact that there is never a disorder, ly case but what comes within their observation, and is properly treated ; and upon the inestimable service ren dered by them to tlie State at large in apprehending fugititive criminals. Athens can do no better, and we trust that the present force may re main long in office. We have Itcen spoken to by prom inent citizens calling our attention to the present condition of the various “water closets” in tbe city and desiie to call the attention of the proper authorities through this medium to the matter. We cannot be too strict in adopting sanitary measures ealeu lated to secure the health cf the city. The latest development in the rail road problem of this section of tee country is the statement that Albers intends to Imild a road to Lawrence- villo via Jug Tavern. We learn that the matter is under serious con sideration, and that more money ca.i be raised for this project than to eith er ofthe others. It i* said that men who will not take hold of the otlie* two roads will invert liberally in this enterprise. This road i* intended to divide the trade with the'Gainesville Js Jefferson road. It will ran on a ridge most ot the way, and wi 1 be ab ut forty miles in length, making the dis:auce ;from Athens to Atlanta just seventy miles. From what wc learn onr Jus Tavern triends place more hopes in this road than either of the other routes, and they are dis posed to devote all of t' eir capital to this, the latest pr >j' Ct.
